Yes—November is a suitable time to plant tulip bulbs in the UK, where the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) lists November in its guidance. Elsewhere, plant while the soil is workable and early enough for bulbs to root before the ground freezes. Choose a sunny, well-drained spot, set bulbs pointed end up, and plant each at a depth of two to three times its height.

Is November a good time to plant tulip bulbs?

The RHS recommends November in its general bulb-planting advice and gives September to November as the tulip planting period in its tulip growing guide. This is UK-oriented guidance, not a universal calendar. In other regions, the key is to plant in fall while the soil is workable and with time for bulbs to root before the ground freezes.

As a regional example, University of Illinois Extension suggests planting fall bulbs about four weeks before the ground freezes. Local freeze dates vary, so use local gardening advice rather than treating that interval as a fixed rule everywhere. If the ground is already frozen or too wet to work, forcing bulbs into it is not a good substitute for planting at the right time.

Choose a suitable site

  • Sun: Select a sunny location if possible.
  • Drainage: Use fertile soil that drains freely. Persistent winter wet and poor drainage can increase the risk of bulb rot.
  • Space: Leave at least twice the bulb’s width between bulbs. For a natural-looking border display, the RHS suggests planting groups of at least six.

For a bed, loosen the soil where you will plant. University of Illinois Extension notes that preparing and loosening the whole bed is preferable in many soils to relying on an individual bulb planter.

Plant bulbs in a garden bed

  1. Check the bulbs and soil. Plant when the soil is workable, choosing a well-drained site. Follow any cultivar or package directions that differ from the general measurements here.
  2. Dig to the right depth. Plant each bulb two to three times as deep as the bulb is tall. Measure from the bulb’s base; University of Illinois Extension specifies measuring depth from the bottom of the bulb. This rule scales with bulb size rather than prescribing one depth for every tulip.
  3. Position the bulb. Set it with the pointed end facing up and the root plate down.
  4. Space and cover. Leave at least twice the bulb’s width between bulbs, cover with soil, and gently firm it.
  5. Water only if needed. If the soil is dry, water after planting to settle it. Avoid saturating already damp soil.

Plant tulips in containers

Use a container with drainage holes and a free-draining compost mix. Position bulbs pointed end up and apply the same depth and spacing rules of thumb, unless the bulb’s instructions say otherwise. You can layer bulbs in a container for a fuller display, but layering is optional, not necessary for planting tulips.

Adjust for very cold or wet conditions

In places with very cold winters, deeper planting may help protect bulbs from penetrating frost, as the RHS notes. Keep drainage in view: deeper planting does not make waterlogged soil suitable. If November comes after the ground has frozen, or conditions are persistently wet, consult local gardening guidance for the area rather than assuming the UK calendar applies.
