To plant a rhizome, first identify the plant: a rhizome is a horizontal underground stem, not a planting method with one universal depth or season. Bearded iris rhizomes sit at or just above the soil surface; ginger is planted about an inch deep in warm soil; canna timing depends on local frost risk. The right orientation, moisture, light, and timing vary by plant and climate.
How do I plant rhizomes?
Start by identifying the plant and checking locally appropriate growing advice. Rhizomes are horizontal stems that grow underground; in the examples discussed here, buds and leaves emerge from the top while roots grow from the bottom. That structure helps with orientation, but it does not determine how deeply every rhizome should be planted. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources explains the distinction in its guide to bulbs, corms, tubers, and rhizomes.
Choose a healthy piece with firm tissue and visible growing points, then match its depth and planting time to the species. The differences among bearded iris, canna, and ginger are substantial:
| Plant | Planting position and depth | Timing and growing conditions | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bearded iris | Plant horizontally in a shallow hole, with the rhizome at soil level or just above it; spread roots around a small mound. | Choose a sunny, well-drained site. In hot Central Valley conditions, UC ANR notes that light shade may help. | Flowering garden perennial; do not bury the rhizome deeply. |
| Canna | Follow the planting depth and orientation for the cultivar and local guidance; the cited sources do not establish one universal depth. | Plant according to local frost conditions. UF/IFAS gives Florida timing of two weeks before the last spring frost; Arkansas Extension advises waiting until frost chances have passed when replanting stored rhizomes. | Heat-loving perennial grown for foliage and flowers. |
| Ginger | Plant buds upward, about an inch deep in warm soil, following UW-Madison’s container-focused guidance. | UW-Madison Extension says growth occurs only above 68°F soil temperature and is best around 77°F. Keep soil moist but not soggy after shoots emerge. | Tender perennial grown for its edible, aromatic rhizome. |
These measurements and dates are source-specific recommendations, not universal rules. Ginger advice differs between UW-Madison’s container-focused guidance and Texas A&M AgriLife’s growing recommendations, so use the instructions suited to your region and whether you are growing in a pot or in the ground.

Which way up do rhizomes go?
Place visible buds or growing points toward the top. Roots should face down and be spread into the soil rather than bent sharply. If the piece has no obvious top or bottom, identify the plant before planting instead of assuming all rhizomes are oriented alike.
How deep should I plant a rhizome?
Depth depends on the plant. Bearded iris is the clearest example of a rhizome that should not be buried: leave it at soil level or slightly exposed. Ginger, by contrast, is planted about an inch deep in UW-Madison Extension’s guidance. The cited canna sources do not establish a single depth that applies across cultivars and growing conditions.

How do I plant bearded iris rhizomes?
Choose a site and healthy divisions
Select a sunny, well-drained location and firm divisions with roots and a healthy fan or other growing point. Utah State University Extension says a viable division needs at least one bud or growing point, healthy rhizome tissue, and developed roots. For warm Central Valley gardens, UC ANR notes that light shade can help.
Set the rhizome shallowly
- Dig a shallow hole and form a small mound of soil in its center.
- Set the rhizome horizontally on the mound, with the roots spread down and outward.
- Backfill around the roots, leaving the rhizome at soil level or just above it.
- Space plants according to the cultivar and the density you want. UC ANR gives 6–8 inches as an example; Illinois Extension recommends 12–18 inches. Neither spacing should be treated as universal.
For detailed regional guidance, see UC ANR’s iris division and replanting guide and the University of Illinois Extension’s iris care guidance.

When should I divide iris rhizomes?
Divide bearded iris when clumps become crowded or flowering declines, usually after flowering. Published extension recommendations vary: Utah State suggests dividing two to five years after planting, while Illinois Extension says clumps commonly need division every three to four years. Treat those as intervals to assess the plant, not an automatic schedule.
Inspect and replant divisions carefully
- Keep pieces with firm rhizome tissue, healthy roots, and a fan or growing point.
- Discard soft, mushy, rotten, or iris-borer-damaged pieces. Penn State Extension advises not composting affected material.
- Sanitize the knife between cuts to reduce the chance of spreading disease.
- Replant sound divisions using the shallow method above.
See Penn State Extension’s iris division guidance for disease and pest inspection advice.

How should I plant and divide canna rhizomes?
Canna is a heat-loving perennial, but planting dates depend on local frost conditions. UF/IFAS recommends planting two weeks before the last spring frost in its Florida guidance, in rich organic soil and full sun. For stored canna rhizomes in the context addressed by Arkansas Extension, the advice is to wait until the chance of frost has passed. These recommendations reflect different regional contexts, not a single nationwide calendar date.
When dividing crowded clumps, UF/IFAS advises doing so after blooming or during milder periods. Retain a good number of roots and leaves on each division and replant it promptly. Check the University of Florida IFAS guide to cannas and Arkansas Extension’s canna guidance for their respective regional recommendations.

Can I grow ginger from a rhizome?
Yes. Ginger is a tender perennial grown for its aromatic rhizome. Choose a plump piece with visible, developed buds. UW-Madison Extension says a piece can be whole or divided into sections with at least two eyes each; cut sections can be left to dry for a few days so the cut surfaces callus.
- Use warm, loose, well-drained soil. Do not plant until conditions are warm enough for ginger to grow.
- Set the rhizome or section with buds facing upward, about an inch deep under UW-Madison Extension’s container-focused recommendation.
- Water lightly while waiting for growth. Once shoots appear, keep the soil evenly moist without leaving it soggy.
- Allow enough warmth: UW-Madison Extension reports that ginger grows only above 68°F soil temperature, with best growth around 77°F.
Texas A&M AgriLife also recommends plump pieces with developed buds, callusing cut sections, and loose, loamy soil with good drainage. Its suggested planting depth and spacing differ from UW-Madison’s container-focused advice, so follow the guidance for your location and growing setup rather than combining the measurements. Consult UW-Madison Extension’s ginger guide and Texas A&M AgriLife’s ginger guidance.
Quick Recap
What commonly goes wrong?
- Planting too deeply: This is especially problematic for bearded iris, whose rhizome should be at or just above the soil surface.
- Planting before conditions suit the plant: Canna timing depends on frost risk, while ginger needs warm soil to grow.
- Using a rotting or damaged division: Inspect iris pieces and discard soft, rotten, or borer-damaged tissue rather than replanting it.
- Keeping ginger too wet: Water lightly before growth begins; after shoots emerge, aim for evenly moist soil, not soggy soil.
- Applying one plant’s rules to another: Iris surface planting does not apply to ginger, and neither supplies a universal canna depth or calendar date.
