To paint a wood fence, first fix damaged wood and moisture problems, then remove loose paint and dirt, apply a compatible exterior primer and paint, and follow the products’ labels for conditions and drying times. If the old coating may contain lead, check current lead-safe guidance before scraping or sanding.

Inspect the fence before painting

Walk the fence and check for peeling or loose paint, damaged or unsound boards, and signs of moisture or water entry. Correct wood and moisture problems before applying primer or paint; a new coating will not repair failing wood or resolve the cause of recurring dampness. For extensive coating failure, plan on thorough preparation rather than trying to conceal it with a quick coat. The National Park Service’s guidance on historic exterior woodwork also supports choosing paint-removal methods according to the coating’s condition and the wood element: NPS Preservation Brief 10: Paint Problems on Historic Woodwork.

Prepare the surface safely

For a previously painted fence

Scrape off loose paint, then brush away remaining loose flakes and dirt. Use a hand scraper and hand sanding where limited removal is appropriate. Work carefully to smooth the edges between sound paint and bare wood without gouging the boards. The amount of removal needed depends on the condition of the existing coating; do not assume every fence needs the same treatment.

Check for lead hazards before scraping or sanding

Scraping and sanding old paint can create dust that may contain lead. EPA guidance is especially relevant to renovation, repair, and painting in pre-1978 housing and child-occupied facilities. Before disturbing older coatings, consult the EPA’s lead-safe renovation guidance for do-it-yourselfers and follow applicable requirements. Consider qualified help when the condition or setting calls for it. A respirator alone does not control dust or make unsafe removal practices safe.

For new wood

New, bare wood needs a coating system suitable for exterior use. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory’s fence guidance describes applying a water-repellent preservative to the wood surface, ends, and joints and allowing it to dry before painting. Whether that treatment is suitable with your selected primer and paint depends on current product instructions; verify compatibility rather than adding it automatically.

Choose an exterior coating system

For an opaque painted finish, use products labeled for exterior wood and confirm that the primer and topcoat are compatible. USDA Forest Products Laboratory guidance describes a primer followed by exterior acrylic-latex paint topcoats; it is general technical guidance, not a universal specification for every modern product or fence. Follow the labels for the products you actually choose.

If you prefer to see the wood grain, consider a penetrating or semi-transparent stain instead of paint. USDA describes these as different finish approaches: paint forms an opaque finish, while stain preserves visible grain. Choose based on the appearance you want and the coating system’s suitability for the wood and exposure.

Apply primer and paint by the product label

  1. Confirm compatibility and preparation requirements. Read the current labels for the primer and paint. Check that both cover exterior wood and that the primer is approved beneath the chosen topcoat.
  2. Check the application conditions. Follow the products’ stated weather, temperature, and surface requirements. These vary by product, so do not rely on a general drying or weather window.
  3. Prime as directed. Apply primer to the prepared surfaces specified by its label, including bare wood where required. Use the label’s instructions for application and drying before recoating.
  4. Apply the paint coats. Use the specified number of coats and recoat interval on the selected paint label. Do not assume a particular coverage rate or coat count applies to every fence or product.

Let the finish cure and maintain it

Allow the coating to dry and cure according to its manufacturer’s instructions before subjecting it to use or cleaning. Inspect the fence periodically for peeling, exposed wood, or moisture-related problems and address small areas as appropriate under the coating manufacturer’s maintenance guidance. There is no single maintenance interval established for all fence woods, exposures, and paint systems.
