Start with the state or regional transportation department’s project notice, then verify the crossing in the official 511 traveler-information service shortly before you leave. Confirm the work dates and hours, whether traffic is fully closed or reduced to lanes, which direction is affected, vehicle restrictions, and the signed detour. Construction schedules and traffic patterns can change with weather, progress, or a revised staging plan, so there is no universal number of minutes to add to every trip.
What to check before you choose a route
The word “construction” does not tell you whether a bridge will be easy to cross. A project may involve a brief daily lane restriction, overnight work, a weekend closure, a traffic shift that lasts months, or a complete closure lasting weeks. Treat the project notice as the operating plan for your travel window, not as a general description of the entire project.

Identify the exact crossing and travel window
Search the official transportation department website by bridge name, highway number, and nearby town. Open the current project or news notice and check the specific date, time, and direction of your trip. Look for weekday-only restrictions, overnight hours, afternoon reopenings, and separate plans for weekends. A project can move to a new stage without the bridge name or highway number changing.

The U.S. 20/Julien Dubuque Bridge notices from Iowa show why the latest notice matters. An earlier notice described an eastbound daily closure with reopening for the afternoon commute. A later update specified weekday openings from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., a planned 6 p.m. closure, and a possible weekend closure. Read the current notice rather than relying on an older summary: Iowa DOT’s June 11, 2026 notice and its June 19, 2026 update.

Determine whether your vehicle can pass
Check more than the bridge’s open/closed status. A notice may apply only to one direction, an entrance ramp, a particular lane, or vehicles above a specified width or height. Read every restriction before committing to the route. If your vehicle is wide, tall, heavy, towing, or carrying an oversize load, confirm that the detour is legal for it rather than assuming a passenger-car route will work.
For example, a Wisconsin Department of Transportation schedule listed a 10-foot width restriction on US 51 between the Minocqua Bridge and Front Street during its stated work periods. The dates on that page—April 6 to June 18 and September 8 to October 9, 2026—are date-bounded examples, not a current guarantee. Check the live schedule before travel: WisDOT’s US 51 Minocqua schedule.
Separate a lane restriction from a full closure
Your planning decision changes completely depending on whether traffic can still cross.
Lane closure or traffic shift
With one lane open, traffic may alternate through a single lane, move to the opposite carriageway, or use a temporary center or side-by-side pattern. Confirm which direction is restricted and whether the open lane operates during your intended crossing. A queue can still make a nominally open bridge impractical at peak times.
The Connecticut Department of Transportation’s Gold Star Memorial Bridge project illustrates a long-term traffic shift. Its project page describes more than 60,000 vehicles crossing each day and a northbound pattern with two lanes shifted to the center for approximately two years. The page lists anticipated project timing from fall 2026 to fall 2030 and a design-and-construction cost of $900 million. Those figures describe that named project only and may change; recheck the page for updates: CTDOT Gold Star Memorial Bridge project information.
Full closure
If the bridge is closed in both directions, do not plan to “get through” by arriving early or following a navigation app’s usual route. Find the official marked detour, identify where it begins, and check where it rejoins the highway. Verify that the detour remains open for your vehicle and does not send you toward another restricted bridge.

Use official 511 information for conditions that can change
Project pages explain planned work. A state’s 511 service is where you check conditions close to departure: incidents, queues, road conditions, work zones, travel times, alerts, and, in some jurisdictions, bridge-opening information.
Iowa
Iowa DOT directs travelers to its 511 system, available on the web, by phone, through a mobile app, and with email or text alerts. The agency states, “The latest traveler information is available anytime through our 511 system.” The same notice explains that construction timing and lane availability can change, including when weather affects the work: Iowa DOT traveler-information guidance.
Virginia
Virginia’s official 511 service lists travel times, road conditions, incidents and work zones, alerts, and bridge-opening notifications. Features differ by state, so use the project page to identify the correct local service: VDOT 511.

A step-by-step planning sequence
- Mark the bridge and your travel window. Write down the highway, crossing, direction, date, arrival time, vehicle type, and destination. Search the official DOT project page using those details.
- Read the current work notice. Record start and end dates, daily hours, weekday or weekend limits, reopening times, and whether the schedule is weather-dependent. Note any planned stage changes.
- Classify the impact. Decide whether the bridge has a lane closure, alternating traffic, a shifted roadway, a ramp restriction, or a full closure. Confirm that the restriction applies to your direction and crossing time.
- Check restrictions. Look for width, height, weight, hazardous-material, trailer, or local-road limitations. A detour suitable for a car may not be suitable for a bus, truck, recreational vehicle, or oversize load.
- Map the official detour. Follow the signed route in the notice and identify its entry and rejoin points. Save the detour instructions or map offline in case cellular service is weak.
- Open the state 511 service. Check current work-zone status, incidents, travel times, road conditions, queues, alerts, and bridge openings where available. Compare the live information with the project notice.
- Compare feasible alternatives. Evaluate the marked detour against another legal route only after checking current conditions and restrictions. Consider whether an alternate route crosses another bridge under construction.
- Choose a departure plan. If the bridge is open but congested, a different departure time may be safer than a longer route. If the closure is uncertain or weather-dependent, prepare both a primary route and the official detour.
- Recheck immediately before leaving. Review the project page and 511 again on the day of travel. A revised staging plan, weather delay, early reopening, new incident, or queue can change the best choice.
- Follow the work-zone setup. Obey posted speeds, signs, barriers, cones, lane markings, and workers’ directions. Do not enter a blocked roadway, and avoid unnecessary lane changes.
How to compare detours and departure times
There is no official universal formula for scoring a bridge detour. Use the factors that affect your particular trip and record them before deciding.
| Comparison factor | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Passability | Is the bridge open in your direction at your arrival time? Does the route permit your vehicle? |
| Official status | Is the route the signed DOT detour, or an alternative you have independently verified? |
| Live conditions | What do 511 incidents, travel times, queues, and road-condition reports show now? |
| Added distance and time | How much longer is the route under current, not normal, conditions? |
| Restrictions | Are there width, height, weight, trailer, or hazardous-material limits? |
| Road complexity | Does it use narrow local roads, difficult turns, limited shoulders, or few safe stopping places? |
| Uncertainty | Would a later departure, earlier departure, or overnight stop reduce the risk of an unpredictable closure? |
Navigation software can be useful for estimating distance, but it should not override a posted closure or signed detour. If an official notice says the bridge is fully closed, plan around that closure until the DOT or 511 service reports that conditions have changed.
How much extra time should you allow?
Official agencies consistently advise allowing extra time or expecting delays, but the reviewed notices do not establish an average bridge-work delay or a standard national, statewide, or project-wide number of minutes. Actual delay depends on the route, traffic demand, time of day, control pattern, queue length, weather, and whether a crash or secondary incident occurs.
Use a trip-specific buffer instead of copying a fixed number. Start with the current 511 travel-time estimate, then consider the uncertainty shown by the project schedule and traffic pattern. A full closure requires the detour’s actual travel time; a lane shift may require more time during peak periods than overnight. If arriving on time is critical, test the route at a similar time on a previous day when practical, monitor 511 before departure, and leave enough flexibility to switch to the verified detour.
MnDOT’s wording is deliberately qualitative: “Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.” Caltrans similarly says to “allow extra travel time” and use alternate routes when possible. Neither statement promises a particular delay duration: MnDOT and Caltrans.
What weather and changing work stages mean for your plan
Construction hours are often conditional. Rain, wind, temperature, material delivery, inspection needs, or unexpected field conditions can postpone work or alter the lane arrangement. Conversely, a crew may complete a stage early and reopen a lane sooner than a broad project description suggests.

Look for phrases such as “weather permitting,” “subject to change,” “staged closure,” “possible weekend closure,” or “reopening time.” Treat a published reopening as a plan rather than a guarantee until 511 or the DOT reports the road open. Recheck after severe weather and again before you approach the bridge.
Work-zone safety while crossing
- Follow the posted work-zone speed limit even when workers are not visible.
- Stay within cones, barriers, and temporary lane markings.
- Do not drive through a gap in a barrier or around a closure sign.
- Avoid unnecessary lane changes, especially near merges and temporary shifts.
- Expect narrow lanes, changing alignments, moving construction vehicles, and workers entering or leaving the roadway.
- Keep a larger following distance so sudden braking in a queue does not become a collision.
- If you miss a detour turn, continue to a safe legal place to reroute; never make an abrupt turn across a closed lane.
MnDOT’s 2026 notice specifically advises following posted speed limits, signs, barriers, and work-zone directions, remaining alert to changing lane shifts and narrow lanes, and avoiding unnecessary lane changes: MnDOT work-zone guidance.
A practical checklist for the day of travel
- Bridge name, highway, direction, and destination confirmed.
- Current project notice opened and work hours checked.
- Lane closure, traffic shift, ramp closure, or full closure identified.
- Vehicle dimensions and any posted restrictions matched to the route.
- Official detour saved, with entry and rejoin points understood.
- 511 service checked for incidents, queues, travel times, road conditions, and alerts.
- Primary route and fallback route both legal and passable.
- Departure time allows for conditions shown by current information.
- Phone charged, navigation available, and directions accessible if service drops.
- Work-zone signs and personnel will be followed rather than an outdated app route.
Why dated project examples should not become travel directions
Transportation departments revise construction schedules, detours, reopening times, and traffic staging. A notice dated June or September 2026 can demonstrate how to interpret a closure without proving that the same restriction remains in force when you travel. Always open the linked project page or current 511 service on publication day and again before departure.
The Gold Star Memorial Bridge figures, the projected 30-day U.S. 20 closure, and the US 51 width restriction are therefore examples of the kinds of information to look for: traffic volume and staging, expected closure duration, and vehicle limits. They are not a substitute for a current local check.
Common planning mistakes and their fixes
Relying on the project title alone
Problem: “Bridge construction” is treated as a full closure or as a minor delay without reading the schedule.
Fix: Find the exact hours, direction, stage, and reopening conditions in the latest notice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUsing an old article or social-media post
Problem: A previous lane pattern or detour is assumed to remain active.
Fix: Use the DOT project page and current 511 report immediately before travel.

Assuming a navigation app knows the closure
Problem: The app routes you toward a barrier, an unsuitable local road, or a bridge with a width limit.
Fix: Follow the signed official detour and verify restrictions independently.
Adding an arbitrary delay buffer
Problem: A fixed number of minutes is treated as reliable for every bridge.
Fix: Use current travel times, queue reports, route length, peak-period exposure, and the uncertainty of the work stage.
Ignoring direction or vehicle type
Problem: A notice that affects eastbound traffic or passenger cars is applied to westbound traffic or a wide vehicle.
Fix: Match the notice to your direction, dimensions, load, and crossing time.

When to postpone, reroute, or stop
Postpone or substantially reroute when the bridge is fully closed, the official detour is incompatible with your vehicle, 511 reports an unsafe or impassable route, or a weather event makes conditions uncertain. If the bridge is technically open but a queue threatens a time-critical appointment, compare a verified alternate route or a later departure rather than entering an unmanaged backup.
Once you are on the road, stop only in a legal, safe location. Do not park on a shoulder near a work zone merely to wait for a reopening. If signs, police, or workers direct traffic differently from a saved route, follow the on-site direction and reassess from a safe place.
Bottom line for planning a bridge-work trip
Use the current DOT project notice to understand the planned restriction and the official 511 service to learn what is happening now. Confirm direction, hours, closure type, detour, and vehicle limits; compare alternatives using live conditions; allow a trip-specific amount of flexibility rather than an invented universal buffer; and recheck just before departure. Treat every dated example as a method for reading a notice, not as a promise that a particular bridge remains closed.
