Use the first visit to answer a practical question: does this market improve the trips you actually make? Check food at home, plan a few meals, build a short like-for-like comparison basket, verify the store’s current offers and services, then record prices, availability, travel time and effort. Keep the store for the categories where it performs well; there is no need to move your entire routine after one visit.
Start with a decision, not a full shopping haul
A new market can be useful without being the cheapest place for every item. Decide what you want to learn on the first trip: whether it stocks the foods your household relies on, whether its prices are competitive for those foods, and whether the extra or reduced travel and shopping effort matter. Because no store, address or region is specified here, its hours, layout, selection, prices, opening promotions, accessibility, online ordering and loyalty terms must be checked in the retailer’s current official information before you leave.

Treat the first visit as a controlled comparison. Buy a normal, manageable basket rather than every item for the week. A short basket makes it easier to distinguish a genuinely useful store from an appealing entrance display or a one-day promotion.

Inventory your kitchen before writing the list
Check the refrigerator, freezer and pantry
Take a quick count of what is usable at home. Note foods that need to be eaten soon, open packages, freezer portions, staples and ingredients that can serve more than one meal. This prevents buying a duplicate and lets you judge the new market on the items you truly need.

Choose a few meals for the coming week
Write down meals you intend to make, then list only the missing ingredients. The USDA MyPlate grocery-shopping guidance recommends planning meals and considering all five food groups; it also recognizes fresh, canned, frozen, dried and dehydrated produce as options. Read the USDA MyPlate grocery-shopping guidance for the food-group framework and label-reading reminders.
Choose a mix that reflects real life: one or two planned dinners, breakfasts, lunches, snacks and flexible basics. Include at least one meal that can use a sale item or a different form of produce, but do not redesign the household’s diet solely to fit a promotion.
Build a fair comparison basket
Select items you buy repeatedly
Pick a short basket of foods purchased often enough to remember their normal price. Include products from several departments, such as a staple grain, milk or an alternative, eggs, a protein, fruit, vegetables, a canned or frozen item and a snack. Add one or two household essentials only if they are part of the same regular trip.

unit price = package price ÷ package quantity
For foods with waste or different yields, compare the amount your household can actually use. The USDA Food Buying Guide demonstrates cost-per-serving comparisons among fresh, canned and frozen foods and cautions that raw food cost does not include labor or storage. Its explanation is available in About the Food Buying Guide.
| Record for each basket item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Product description and acceptable substitute | Prevents a premium brand or different formulation from distorting the comparison. |
| Package size, count or weight | Allows a like-for-like or unit-price calculation. |
| Regular price and any sale price | Separates the everyday price from a temporary offer. |
| Loyalty or coupon requirement | Shows whether the advertised price is available to you and under what conditions. |
| In-stock status and quality | A low price is not useful if the item is unavailable or unsuitable. |
Check current store information and offer conditions
Verify the basics before travelling
Look at the retailer’s official information for opening hours, address, parking or transit details, accessibility, online ordering, pickup or delivery, payment methods and any department that matters to your list. These details can change during an opening period. Do not assume that a nearby storefront offers every service advertised by the company elsewhere.
Read the terms behind a discount
Check the dates, eligibility, minimum purchase, quantity limits, required account and exclusions for each coupon, sale or loyalty offer. The USDA MyPlate guidance identifies coupons, loyalty programs, sale and in-season foods, and comparing brands and prices as possible saving approaches, but it does not promise a particular amount of savings. The MyPlate grocery-shopping page is the appropriate general reference.
Write the qualifying price beside the item on your list. If a discount requires buying more than you can use before it spoils, calculate the cost of the amount you will actually consume rather than treating the headline price as a saving.
Organize the list for a focused first visit
Group by department or food group
Arrange the list in the order you expect to move through the market. Typical headings include produce; meat, fish or plant proteins; dairy and eggs; frozen; canned and dry goods; bakery; snacks; and household items. Grouping reduces backtracking and makes it easier to mark substitutions when a shelf is empty.

Separate necessities from optional discoveries
- Must buy: ingredients required for the planned meals and essentials that are running out.
- Flexible: items for which you can accept a different brand, form or flavor.
- Compare only: products you want to price-check but do not need today.
- Optional: an unfamiliar in-season food or promotion, purchased only after the planned list is complete.
Set a spending ceiling for the planned basket before entering. It is a decision aid, not a claim about what the market will charge.
Plan travel, timing and food storage
Measure the trip you will actually make
Estimate door-to-door travel time, parking or transit time, checkout time and the return journey with groceries. A store that is closer by distance may take longer if access is difficult; a farther store may be efficient if it combines several errands. USDA Economic Research Service materials identify travel time, healthy-food availability and prices as relevant dimensions of food access and affordability. See Food Prices, Expenditures, and Establishments.
Match the basket to your storage capacity
Check refrigerator and freezer space before accepting a multi-buy offer or a large package. Fresh, frozen, canned, dried and dehydrated forms can have different preparation, storage and waste implications. The Food Buying Guide’s cost comparisons explicitly caution that preparation and storage affect the practical cost, so include your time and available space in the decision.
If you are walking, cycling or using transit, plan the weight and temperature-sensitive items accordingly. Bring insulated bags or a cooler when needed, and place frozen or refrigerated foods in the basket near the end of the visit.

Make the first visit an information-gathering trip
- Start with the planned route. Follow your department-organized list instead of wandering through every aisle. This keeps impulse purchases from replacing the comparison you came to make.
- Locate the key departments. Note the positions of produce, chilled foods, frozen goods, staples, checkout lanes, customer service and restrooms if those affect future visits.
- Price the comparison basket. Record the shelf price, package size, unit price when shown, sale label and any loyalty requirement. Photographing a shelf label can help you check the number later, subject to the store’s rules.
- Check availability and alternatives. Mark each item as available, unavailable or replaced. Record whether the substitute meets your brand, ingredient, dietary and size requirements.
- Inspect labels and condition. Compare nutrition and ingredient information on plausible alternatives, as MyPlate recommends, and check dates, packaging and produce quality for the foods you will serve.
- Observe practical friction. Note queues, checkout speed, payment options, accessibility, parking or transit access and how easy it is to carry the basket home.
- Buy a controlled basket. Purchase what you need and a limited number of optional items. Avoid stocking up until you know the products suit your household and the offers are repeatable.
Compare the new market with your regular store
Use the same basket and the same rules
Enter the new market’s observations beside the prices from your usual store, collected for the same product descriptions and quantities. If the brands differ, compare an acceptable equivalent and note the difference. Do not compare a sale price at one store with a regular price at the other without labeling the conditions.
| Comparison area | Questions to answer | How to record it |
|---|---|---|
| Like-for-like price | What is the price per item, weight, volume or serving? | Record package quantity and calculate unit price when needed. |
| Offers | Is the lower price tied to a date, account, coupon, quantity or other condition? | Write the requirement and expiration beside the price. |
| Availability | Were the foods and acceptable alternatives in stock? | Count available items and list substitutions or gaps. |
| Nutrition and ingredients | Do the options meet household dietary needs? | Note the label differences that affect your choice. |
| Quality and usable yield | Will the form and condition provide the amount you can use? | Consider trim, waste, preparation and servings. |
| Travel and time | How long and how difficult was the complete trip? | Record door-to-door time, transport cost and checkout effort. |
| Storage and preparation | Can you store and prepare the chosen forms without extra waste? | Note freezer, refrigerator, pantry and preparation demands. |
Calculate the basket total without hiding trade-offs
Add the prices for the items you would actually buy, applying only discounts for which you qualify. Then record separate non-price costs: travel time, transport or parking expense, extra preparation, storage limits and any second trip caused by an out-of-stock item. A lower receipt total may not be the better result if it requires a costly detour or leaves key ingredients unavailable.
For example, if one store sells a larger package at a lower unit price but you can use only half before spoilage, compare the usable amount and waste rather than the package sticker alone. If frozen vegetables cost more per package but eliminate trimming and last longer in your freezer, record that convenience as part of the decision; do not silently convert it into a price claim.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use national averages as proof of a local bargain
USDA datasets can provide context, but they cannot tell you what this unidentified market charges today. USDA’s Purchase to Plate documentation says its national average unit prices do not represent the price a person faces in a particular locality, at a particular time or for a specific food item. It also cautions that product and data changes mean the series should not be used to examine price trends between cycles. Read the qualifications in Purchase to Plate documentation.

Likewise, the USDA Food Plans page describes the Thrifty Food Plan as a planning benchmark based on current food prices, food-composition data, consumption patterns and dietary guidance. Its cost levels and market baskets were last updated in 2021; Alaska and Hawaii adjustments were published in 2023, and food-plan costs are updated monthly for inflation. Those benchmarks depend on the month, household age and sex group, geography and plan assumptions, so they are not a quote for your basket. See USDA Food Plans for the definitions and updates.

Evaluate nutrition, quality and availability for your household
Check labels instead of assuming a substitute is equivalent
When a preferred item is missing, compare serving information, ingredients, added sugars, sodium, allergens and other nutrition details relevant to your household. A lower-priced alternative that does not meet a medical, cultural or dietary requirement is not a successful substitution. Keep the original item on your regular-store list if the new market cannot meet that need reliably.
Judge availability over more than one visit
One empty shelf may reflect delivery timing rather than the store’s normal range. Mark the gap and, on a later trip, check whether the product returns. Conversely, an attractive opening assortment may not remain. Track the specific products and acceptable alternatives that matter to your meals instead of rating the market on overall visual variety.

Use a simple category-based decision
After unpacking, review the basket while the details are fresh. Keep the new market in your routine for a category or trip type when it offers a repeatable advantage: a needed product, a suitable quality level, a competitive unit price, a convenient route or a useful service. Use your regular store for categories where it remains more reliable or less burdensome.
| Result from the first visit | Reasonable next move |
|---|---|
| Most must-buy items available and the complete trip is easier or competitive | Try the new market for the next planned shop and continue recording the basket. |
| Only certain departments are strong | Use it selectively for those departments and keep the rest of the route unchanged. |
| Good opening discounts but weak everyday comparison | Use offers only when the terms and quantities fit; reassess after the promotion ends. |
| Key dietary items or staples missing | Keep the regular store as the primary shop and revisit only if the assortment changes. |
| Receipt is acceptable but travel or storage makes the trip impractical | Prefer the store with the lower total burden, even if its shelf prices are not lowest on every item. |
Recheck when circumstances change
Prices, promotions, stock, household needs, transport and available storage all change. Re-run the short comparison when a loyalty program changes, a sale ends, a new dietary requirement appears, your commute changes or the market adds a service you would use. Keep the original notes so you can tell a lasting pattern from a one-time opening offer.
A reusable checklist
- Inventory the refrigerator, freezer and pantry.
- Choose several meals and list missing ingredients.
- Include flexible basics, snacks and any dietary requirements.
- Select a short comparison basket with exact sizes and acceptable alternatives.
- Check current hours, address, access, services, coupons and loyalty terms in official store information.
- Organize the list by department or food group.
- Set a planned-basket spending limit and note optional items separately.
- Estimate door-to-door time, transport, checkout and carrying conditions.
- Bring a phone note, paper or list pad with spaces for prices and substitutions.
- Record actual prices, unit quantities, offer conditions, availability and quality.
- Include preparation, storage, waste and travel effort in the comparison.
- Decide by category or trip type rather than forcing an all-or-nothing switch.
The useful outcome of a first visit is not a dramatic verdict about an unnamed store. It is a set of local observations tied to the foods, budget, time and storage constraints your household actually has. That record lets you return when the new market helps and skip it when the apparent saving does not survive a complete trip.
