Manufacturer advice differs: Sherwin-Williams cautions that repeated foot traffic can shorten the life of paint on slick tile, and Zinsser UK does not recommend painting ceramic floor tiles in areas subject to foot traffic. By contrast, Rust-Oleum and Tikkurila publish floor-specific systems for tile. Choose a product expressly intended for your floor and follow that manufacturer’s complete instructions; no coating can be assumed to last for a guaranteed period.
Decide whether painting is suitable for your floor
First identify the tile and assess how the room is used. A decorative coating on a low-traffic floor is a different proposition from a heavily used entrance or a wet area. Check the coating maker’s current label and technical data for the specific tile, location and moisture exposure before buying materials.
The guidance is not uniform. Sherwin-Williams says, “Painting tile flooring is not recommended due to repeated foot traffic, as this frequent wear and pressure can impact the longevity of the topcoat because tile is such a slick surface.” Its floor-specific FAQ nevertheless describes preparation and a durable Porch & Floor enamel if a reader proceeds. That is Sherwin-Williams’ product guidance, not a universal compatibility recommendation. Zinsser UK likewise says it does not recommend painting ceramic floor tiles where they are subject to foot traffic. Read Sherwin-Williams’ tile-painting FAQ and Zinsser UK’s ceramic-tile guidance.
Other manufacturers publish systems specifically for floor tile. Rust-Oleum describes HOME Floor Coating for interior floor projects, while Tikkurila specifies a system for interior ceramic or stoneware tile floors, including dry and wet rooms. These are separate systems with different preparation and coating requirements; do not combine their steps. Tikkurila’s gloss configuration excludes shower areas, so confirm the appropriate configuration and current local data sheets for your room. See Tikkurila’s tile-floor system.

Choose one complete coating system
Do not select primer, paint and topcoat independently. Use a system whose manufacturer identifies it as suitable for the tile floor and conditions in question, and follow its current label and technical data. The examples below are distinct manufacturer instructions, not interchangeable parts of one recipe.

Inspect, clean and prepare the tile
Repair problems before coating
Check the tile, grout and joints for loose elements, cracks or other defects. Tikkurila calls for these problems to be addressed before painting. Do not expect paint to stabilize a loose tile or repair damaged grout; make repairs appropriate to the floor first.

Remove contamination and let the floor dry
Clean thoroughly and remove limescale, dirt, grease and other residues. Tikkurila instructs users to rinse away detergent residue and allow the floor to dry fully. Residue or moisture can undermine adhesion, so do not coat until the surface meets the selected system’s preparation requirements.
Follow the selected system’s surface instructions
Preparation is product-specific. Tikkurila says glazed tile should be taken to a matt finish and specifies its primer-and-topcoat system. Rust-Oleum says its HOME Floor Coating does not require primer, even over a dark color, and calls for an adhesion test. Do not infer that one manufacturer’s sanding or priming requirement applies to another brand.

Run Rust-Oleum’s adhesion test if using that system
Rust-Oleum’s guide describes a test on a small, clean area: let the test patch dry for 12 hours, cut an X through the coating, press duct tape over it, then inspect whether coating pulls away. The guide indicates sanding if the tape removes more than 10 percent of the coating. These are instructions for its HOME Floor Coating system; follow its current guide and label.
Plan and paint the checkerboard
Lay out the pattern before applying it. Decide the square size and where the grid will begin, then check how the lines meet the room edges and fixed features such as doorways or cabinets. The supplied Rust-Oleum pattern example demonstrates a taped tile design with half-tile triangles; it does not provide a complete measurement method or dimensions for a full-floor checkerboard. Measure and mark your own layout rather than treating that example as a universal grid plan.

- Apply the base coat. Use the base color and application method specified by your chosen floor system. Allow it to dry for the interval on that product’s instructions before taping the design.
- Mark and tape the pattern. Establish the grid using your chosen square dimensions, then mask the squares that will receive the contrasting color. Check the layout before painting; the manufacturer’s example supports taped decorative designs, but does not guarantee a particular tape will produce clean edges.
- Paint the contrasting squares. Apply the contrasting color as directed by the coating manufacturer. Remove or manage tape according to the product instructions and your chosen method; do not assume another system’s timing or technique applies.
- Apply the specified topcoat. Rust-Oleum places its decorative design after the base coat and before the topcoat. Use only the compatible topcoat required by your selected system, following its recoat instructions.
Rust-Oleum’s steps are for its HOME Floor Coating system. Tikkurila’s primer and compatible topcoat form a different system; do not substitute Rust-Oleum timing or application steps for Tikkurila’s technical data.

Follow the cure schedule, ventilation directions and use restrictions for the specific product. Rust-Oleum states that its system permits light foot traffic after 24 hours, furniture after 72 hours and reaches full cure after seven days; it also says not to wash the floor before full cure. These are product instructions, not independent durability findings, and apply to that system only. Other coatings may have different schedules. Check Rust-Oleum’s pattern and cure instructions.

What to expect from a painted tile floor
Manufacturer instructions establish how to apply particular products, not how many years a checkerboard will last. The cited guidance does not establish independent wear-test results or a guaranteed service life. Traffic, moisture exposure, tile condition, surface preparation and adherence to the chosen system all matter, so weigh the expected maintenance against the look you want before proceeding.
