One published Arduino project documents a maker’s version using J-channel rails, continuous-rotation hobby servos, infrared remote control and a pre-made robotic claw. Its parts list and roughly 8-by-10-foot track arrangement are a record of that build—not an engineered plan or proof that a ceiling can safely support it.
How a room-sized skill crane works
Unlike a tabletop claw machine, this design puts the track above the play area. One carriage travels along one rail, a second axis moves across it, and a vertical line raises or lowers the claw. The result is an X/Y/Z machine: the user positions the claw over a target, lowers it, closes it, and brings it back up.
The room-scale project grew from its creator Marc Cryan’s earlier two-axis prototype installed in a door frame. Make’s overview describes the expanded version as spanning a room and using a SparkFun robotic claw. Make’s project overview identifies the creator and summarizes the remote-and-Arduino control concept.
The documented system and parts
The published build report describes paired J-channel track, suspended carriages, servo drives, Arduino boards and batteries mounted with motor assemblies, and an IR remote-control scheme. It reports six 8-foot lengths of J-channel and an approximately 8-by-10-foot track layout. Those dimensions describe the author’s installation; they do not establish a standard room size or a load-rated specification. The report also notes that the maker did not need precise measurement for that arrangement, which should not be treated as a recommendation for structural layout.

The reproduction’s parts list and build description also mention soldering and drilling-related work. Exact models, availability, ratings and compatibility may have changed; treat this list as a starting point for identifying subsystems, not a ready-to-order bill of materials.
How the documented controls are arranged
The maker placed Arduino boards and battery packs with the motor assemblies and used infrared signals from a universal remote. The stated design benefit is avoiding long control wires running to moving assemblies. The tradeoff is that electronics and power sources travel with the gantry, adding moving mass and requiring a suitable way to mount, protect, power and service them. The project report documents this as an approach, not as the only or most reliable control architecture.

Continuous-rotation hobby servos were used after modification. A reproduction would need to resolve the details the project description does not establish: the drive interfaces, motion limits, control behavior, wiring protection, and what happens if a signal is lost or a component fails. The Arduino/IR description alone is not a complete control or safety design.
What a smaller claw-machine thesis does—and does not—show
A separate engineering thesis describes a smaller prototype with an X/Y gantry and a string-driven Z axis, discussing its microcontroller, motors and mechanical choices. Its mechanism was intended only to support its own weight. That work can help readers understand a compact gantry concept, but it is not evidence that the room-sized crane can safely carry prizes of significant weight, people, or any particular load. The thesis is scoped to its own smaller prototype.

Resolve engineering and safety before overhead installation
The room-sized build report describes tracks hanging from hooks and improvised strap connections, but supplies no structural calculations, validated ceiling-anchor ratings, rated loads or tested operating envelope. Nothing in the documented parts list establishes that a particular ceiling, hook, strap, rail or fastener can support the assembly and its moving loads. Do not copy its suspension details as a safe installation method.
Before any overhead build, the structural support, guarding, electrical design, motion limits and emergency stopping need application-specific evaluation by appropriately qualified people for the actual space and intended use. The project description cannot settle those questions. A commercial arcade-machine manual likewise calls for application-specific risk analysis, evaluation and testing by an integrator, but its requirements and maintenance instructions apply to that vendor’s machine and should not be transferred to a DIY crane without confirming compatibility. The vendor manual is a cautionary reference, not certification of this design.

Use the project as a concept, not a construction-ready plan
The published room crane is useful as a system-level example: overhead track, two horizontal travel axes, a vertical claw line, onboard Arduino-and-battery assemblies, IR input and an off-the-shelf claw. It does not provide the engineering information needed to reproduce an overhead machine safely. Any decision to adapt the concept should be based on a separately developed and evaluated design for the building, components, users and operating conditions—not on the prototype’s dimensions or improvised suspension.
