How to Organize Kitchen Cabinets: Expert Advice That Fits Your Routine

A practical way to organize kitchen cabinets: sort one at a time, create zones around your routine, store heavy cookware low, and measure before adding organizers.

Organize kitchen cabinets around the way you cook: clear one cabinet at a time, group items by task, and put everyday and heavy items where they are easiest and safest to reach. Before buying organizers, adjust existing shelves and measure the space; accessories help only when they solve a specific access or stacking problem.

How to organize kitchen cabinets efficiently

  1. Work one cabinet at a time. Empty or sort a single cabinet, then remove broken, worn-out, unwanted, or redundant items. Donate usable items if appropriate. Sorting by use helps keep the job manageable and makes it easier to see what needs a home.
  2. Set zones around tasks. Keep prep tools near the prep area, cookware near the range, and drinkware near the sink or coffee maker when the kitchen layout allows. Let your household’s actual routine—not a fixed diagram—determine placement. Put frequently used items within easy reach and occasional-use serving pieces higher or farther away.
  3. Group and stack thoughtfully. Store like items together, stack similarly sized dishes, and nest compatible pots and bowls. Store trays, platters, boards, and lids vertically if a divider fits without wasting too much room.
  4. Use the existing space first. Adjust shelf height where possible before adding products. A riser can create a second level for dishes or pantry items when a tall shelf leaves unused vertical space. As professional organizer Nikki Bell, founder of Just Us Organizing, puts it: “Risers allow you to make two shelves in one space,” in Martha Stewart’s expert advice article.
  5. Keep heavy cookware low. Lower cabinets are generally a better place for heavy pots and pans, where they are easier to lift safely than from an overhead shelf.
  6. Reassess after using the kitchen. Return items to their zones and notice what is inconvenient to reach. Adjust the arrangement to fit how the kitchen is used.

How to make deep or awkward cabinets easier to use

Choose an organizer for the specific obstacle, and check the cabinet dimensions and clearances before buying. Manufacturer and retailer guides describe these products as options; they do not establish that any one organizer is necessary or that it will increase capacity by a particular amount.

Option Useful for Check before buying or installing
Adjustable shelf or shelf riser Recovering unused vertical room or separating dish stacks Shelf height, width, depth, and stability
Pull-out basket or organizer Bringing items forward in a deep lower cabinet Interior dimensions, plumbing or hinges, installation needs, and clearance when loaded
Lazy Susan or turntable Reaching small items in a suitable deep or corner cabinet Cabinet shape and dimensions, and whether items remain stable while turning
Vertical divider or lid holder Storing trays, platters, lids, or boards upright Divider spacing, available depth, and the space the rack itself uses
Over-door basket Holding thin, compact items such as lids Door clearance and whether the door closes unobstructed
Clear dry-food containers Making grouped dry goods easier to see Food compatibility, capacity, labeling, and ease of cleaning

A vertical rack or pull-out may improve access while consuming space or requiring installation. If a product blocks a hinge, conflicts with plumbing, or prevents a door from closing, it is not a useful fit for that cabinet.

How to organize dry food safely

Group pantry items by type and put older items toward the front so they are easier to notice. Store dry foods in a cool, dark, dry cabinet away from heat-producing appliances, following Whirlpool’s cabinet-organizing guidance. Moving food from its original package into clear containers is an optional way to see and group it, not a food-safety requirement. For food-safety questions, use the U.S. FDA’s Food Safety in Your Kitchen resources.

What to avoid when organizing cabinets

  • Do not place everyday dishes or tools in hard-to-reach spots while giving prime space to occasional-use items.
  • Do not assume that a turntable, pull-out, or vertical rack will suit every cabinet; measure and consider how much usable space the product takes up.
  • Do not install over-door storage without checking shelf and door clearance.
  • Do not treat clear containers as a food-safety rule or rely on an organizer to extend food storage life.
