To measure amps with a digital multimeter, switch off power, connect the leads to the correct current and COM jacks, then open the circuit and place the meter in series. Restore power only after checking the setup, read the current, and switch off power again before disconnecting. This procedure is for suitable low-voltage circuits; the meter’s manual and ratings determine whether it is safe for your circuit.
Before you begin: check the circuit and meter
Identify whether the circuit is AC or DC and estimate the highest current you might encounter. Check the meter manual for its current-input jacks, ranges, fuse, terminal limits, and safety ratings. A jack or range that is safe on one meter may not be suitable on another.
If you cannot estimate the current, follow the exact manual for your model. For example, the Fluke 8808A manual directs users to start with its 10 A and LO terminals when current is unknown. That is guidance for that instrument, not a universal rule for digital multimeters. The same manual uses 200 mA as the boundary for its 200 mA versus 10 A input guidance; do not treat that figure as a limit for other meters. Fluke’s current-measurement instructions and the 8808A manual explain their respective procedures and limits.
Do not assume that a basic multimeter procedure is appropriate for mains wiring, distribution panels, or high-energy circuits. Use the instrument only within its stated ratings and instructions, and do not work on a circuit if you cannot establish safe conditions.

- Additional Tips - The following incorrect operations may cause the multimeter not to show results: Firstly, the plugs of test leads are not fully inserted or not inserted into the correct sockets. Secondly, the manual rotary switch is not placed in the correct position. In addition, this meter can not test all AC Current and below 100mV AC Voltage. Please check the user manual carefully before measurement.
- Versatile Digital Multimeter - Accurately measures AC/DC Voltage, DC Current, Resistance, and Diode. This Multimeter is a really useful tool for solving industrial and household electrical issues. Suitable for Household Outlets, Fuses, Batteries (including Vehicles), Automotive Circuit Troubleshooting, Charging Systems, Testing electronics in Cars etc.
- Troubleshooting with Accuracy - This Multimeter has a sampling speed of 2 times per second; Built-in a backlight LCD display with 3 ½ digits (1999 count) 0.6”, and high polarity including negative and positive readings.
- Ensures Safety - Double fuse is anti-burn and protects from overloading. The silicone cover can protect the multimeter from failing damage and prevent electric shocks. And low battery indication will be displayed when battery power is low.

How to measure current with a multimeter
- Switch off circuit power. Fluke’s DMM user manual warns: “To prevent possible electrical shock, fire, or personal injury, remove circuit power before you connect the Product in the circuit when you measure current.” Fluke’s manual gives this instruction for current measurements.
- Choose the current function and matching jacks. Select AC current or DC current to match the circuit, then choose A, mA, or µA as appropriate for the expected current. Put the black lead in COM and the red lead in the meter’s suitable current jack. Jack layouts vary; some meters have a separate mA/µA input, while others do not. Check your meter’s manual or Fluke’s guide to multimeter jacks and controls rather than relying on another model’s layout.
- Open the circuit. Interrupt one conductor at the point where you want to measure. Connect one meter lead to each side of the break so the meter completes the path in series with the load.
- Check the connections, then restore power. Confirm that the leads are secure, the red lead is in a current jack, and the selected function and range suit the circuit. Apply power only once the meter is correctly in series.
- Read the display. Note the value, unit, and AC/DC indicator. If the reading is outside the selected range or the meter indicates an overload, switch off power before changing the range or input jack. Follow the meter’s instructions for the next setting.
- Switch off power before disconnecting. Remove the meter from the opened path, restore the circuit connection as appropriate, and move the red lead back to the voltage/ohms jack before taking a voltage measurement. Leaving it in a current jack can create a short if you later connect the leads across a voltage source. Fluke’s jack guide and multimeter safety guide describe this hazard.
Why the meter goes in series—and the main hazard
A digital multimeter measures current through a low-resistance shunt in its current input. It infers current from the voltage across that known resistance, so current must flow through the meter: the meter belongs in series with the load. Keysight explains the shunt and series connection in its 2023 guide to using a digital multimeter.
Never place leads connected to a current jack across a voltage source. The current input’s low resistance can create a short, potentially causing damage or injury. A fuse may protect the current input, but it does not make an incorrect connection safe; use only the fuse specified by the manufacturer. See Fluke’s ABCs of Multimeter Safety.

When a clamp meter may be the better method
A direct multimeter current test requires opening the circuit. A clamp meter or compatible current-clamp accessory measures the magnetic field around a conductor and can measure current without breaking the circuit. The clamp must surround one conductor only: clamping around both line and neutral can cause their magnetic fields to cancel and produce a misleading reading.
Before using a clamp, confirm that it supports the required AC or DC measurement, covers the expected current range, and is compatible with the meter and the accessory’s output type. Fluke’s guidance covers current-clamp compatibility and placement and choosing a clamp for the current type and range. Direct series measurement and clamping are different methods; neither is universally best for every circuit.
