To find out whether a bunk bed will fit, measure the exact installation spot in three dimensions, then compare those measurements with the bed’s assembled dimensions—not just the mattress size. Check the lowest ceiling point above the upper mattress, the full floor footprint with the ladder and any drawers extended, door and closet swings, and the mattress thickness allowed by the manufacturer.
A safe fit also requires usable headroom and compliant guardrails. Plan roughly 70 cm from the top of the mattress to the ceiling for a younger child or 80–90 cm for a teenager, while treating the specific frame, mattress, occupant and lowest ceiling point as decisive. U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) rules require at least 5 inches between the mattress surface and the upper guardrail when the thickest permitted mattress is installed.

Start with a three-dimensional fit check
A bunk bed can fit between two walls and still be unusable if the ladder is blocked, a bedroom door cannot open, or the mattress sits too high for the guardrail. Before choosing a model, record these measurements at the intended location:

- Operating clearances: open floor in front of the ladder, doors, drawers and trundle.
- Safety geometry: mattress size and maximum thickness, guardrail height, end-structure clearance and wall-side guardrail requirements.
Write every measurement down in one unit. Measure twice, and use the smallest clearance where walls or ceilings are irregular.

What to measure before the bed arrives
Ceiling height at the exact bed location
Measure from the finished floor to the lowest point of the ceiling directly above where the upper bunk will stand. Do not measure at the room’s highest point and assume the result applies everywhere. Repeat the measurement at several points when the ceiling slopes or has a beam, fan, pendant, recessed fitting or other obstruction.
For headroom, use the top of the upper mattress as the reference point. The frame’s advertised overall height is not the same as the distance from the mattress to the ceiling: posts, slats and the mattress itself consume part of the vertical space. Millie & Jones gives planning targets of about 70 cm from mattress top to ceiling for a younger child and 80–90 cm for a teenager. These are comfort-planning figures, not a substitute for the bed’s drawings or a guarantee that every occupant will find the space comfortable.
Mark the lowest ceiling point on your plan. If a fan or light fitting occupies the proposed head area, measure its lowest position and include the space needed for safe operation and maintenance. A model that clears a flat ceiling may fail under a beam or sloped section.

Measure the complete wall run where the bed will sit, at the height of the baseboard. Record the shortest usable length if the wall steps in or the trim is uneven. Then mark every feature that can interfere with the frame or ladder:
- windowsills, casings and curtains;
- bedroom and closet doors, including their swing arcs;
- radiators, heaters and pipe covers;
- electrical outlets, switches and data plates;
- baseboards, chair rails and other trim that prevents the frame from sitting flush.
Measure from the actual finished surfaces. A nominal room dimension taken from a floor plan can be larger than the space available after plaster, trim and heating equipment are installed.

Usable floor depth, not mattress length
Measure the room’s available depth against the manufacturer’s assembled length and width. Include corner posts, the ladder or stairs, side rails, guardrails and any protruding hardware. If the bed has storage drawers or a pull-out trundle, measure the fully extended projection as well as the closed footprint.
Do not use the mattress label as a proxy for the frame. For example, Orbelle Model 7278 lists an assembled size of 79 1/7 inches long × 43 inches wide × 72 inches high. Those outside dimensions—not merely the mattress dimensions—are what must fit between your walls and around trim, doors and fixtures. Confirm that the listing you are using applies to the exact model and configuration; a staircase, storage option or guardrail position can change the footprint.

Access space in front of the ladder and trundle
The ladder needs a clear approach so a child can climb without stepping around furniture. Millie & Jones suggests 50–60 cm of clear floor in front of a ladder. Treat that as a planning target measured from the ladder’s lowest usable step to the nearest obstruction. Check the entire approach, not just a single point: a desk corner, radiator or open door can narrow the path.
For a pull-out trundle, allow about 90 cm of clear floor in front of the opening, according to Millie & Jones. Measure with the trundle fully extended and account for the person making the bed. Confirm that closet and bedroom doors can open fully in both the bed’s closed and operating positions.
Measure the mattress and guardrail together
Use the manufacturer’s exact mattress specification
Record the required mattress length and width and the manufacturer’s maximum permitted thickness. A thicker mattress raises the sleeping surface and reduces the guardrail margin; a mattress that is too small can create dangerous gaps. Use only a mattress that matches the stated size and does not exceed the stated thickness.

When comparing a mattress already in your home, measure its actual thickness without compressing it. Bedding, toppers and protectors can add height, so include anything that will remain on the bed during use. If the manufacturer specifies a maximum thickness, treat it as a hard limit rather than a comfort preference.
Apply the CPSC guardrail rule
The CPSC requires the upper guardrail to be at least 5 inches above the mattress surface when the thickest recommended mattress is installed. The same 5-inch margin applies to the upper-bunk end structures for at least half the distance between the corner posts. Check this geometry with the permitted mattress at its maximum thickness, not with a thinner sample mattress.
“A bunk bed is a bed with the bottom of its mattress foundation more than 30 inches above the floor.” — U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Bunk Beds Business Guidance
The 30-inch threshold is the CPSC definition of a bunk bed; it is not a recommended clearance between a mattress and ceiling. CPSC measurements address guardrails, mattress thickness and entrapment openings, while headroom targets address comfort and movement. You need both checks.
Inspect the wall-side guardrail and end structures
CPSC guidance requires the guardrail on the wall side—or the side opposite the ladder—to run continuously from one end of the bed to the other, with strict limits on openings. Identify which side of the assembled bed will face the wall and confirm that the specified guardrail can be installed there. Follow the manufacturer’s anchoring and assembly instructions; do not omit hardware because the frame appears stable against the wall.

Use a measurement worksheet for each candidate bed
Make one sheet per model so a promising footprint does not hide an access or safety conflict.
| Checkpoint | Measure or record | Pass condition |
|---|---|---|
| Ceiling | Lowest finished-floor-to-ceiling point above the upper mattress | Mattress-top clearance meets your comfort target at the lowest point, with no interference from beams, fans or lights |
| Wall run | Usable length at baseboard level, less trim and projections | Greater than the bed’s assembled length, with the ladder and guardrails in the chosen orientation |
| Closed footprint | Assembled outside length and width, including posts and ladder/stairs | Fits without covering a radiator, outlet or required door opening |
| Operating depth | Projection with drawers or trundle fully extended | Leaves the required clear floor and does not block doors or closets |
| Ladder approach | Floor from the ladder’s lowest step to the nearest obstruction | About 50–60 cm or more, following the Millie & Jones planning guidance |
| Trundle approach | Floor in front of a fully extended trundle | About 90 cm or more, following the Millie & Jones planning guidance |
| Mattress | Required size and actual thickness, including protector or topper | Matches the manufacturer’s size and does not exceed its maximum thickness |
| Guardrail | Mattress-top-to-rail and end-structure distances at maximum mattress thickness | At least 5 inches where the CPSC requirement applies |
| Wall side | Guardrail position, openings and anchoring points | Continuous wall-side or ladder-opposite rail installed exactly as specified |
How to compare two or more bunk-bed models
Compare models on the dimensions that determine whether the bed works in your room, rather than on mattress size alone.
| Comparison axis | What to compare | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Assembled footprint | Outside length and width, including posts and ladder | A nominal twin or single mattress can sit in frames with very different outer dimensions |
| Vertical fit | Overall frame height and mattress-top height | The tallest frame may leave less usable headroom even when both beds use the same mattress |
| Access | Ladder approach, door swing, drawer and trundle extension | A bed that fits closed may be impossible to use when access parts are deployed |
| Safety compatibility | Permitted mattress size and thickness, guardrail height and wall-side requirements | Changing the mattress or ladder side can alter the required safety geometry |
| Room conflicts | Windows, radiators, vents, fans, lights and sloped ceilings | Fixed features can make an otherwise adequate footprint unusable |
For a specific model, copy the manufacturer’s assembled dimensions into the worksheet. If a specification does not state a value—such as mattress-top height, maximum mattress thickness or trundle projection—record it as not stated and obtain the information before ordering. Do not infer an unknown dimension from the mattress label.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical measuring sequence
- Mark the intended bed rectangle. Use painter’s tape on the floor for the outer length and width shown in the manufacturer’s assembled drawing. Include the ladder or stairs in the orientation you plan to use.
- Check the ceiling inside that rectangle. Measure finished floor to ceiling at the upper-bunk head, foot and center positions. Recheck any low beam, slope, fan or light.
- Mark wall features. At baseboard level, note windows, doors, radiators, outlets and trim. Mark the opening arcs of doors and closets.
- Extend every moving component. Pull out each drawer and the trundle to its full travel, then measure the remaining floor. Leave the ladder approach unobstructed.
- Place the actual mattress specification beside the frame drawing. Confirm size and maximum thickness. Add the thickness of any protector or topper you intend to use.
- Verify guardrail geometry. With the maximum permitted mattress thickness, confirm the 5-inch CPSC margin above the mattress and at the relevant end structures.
- Confirm the wall-side installation. Ensure the continuous guardrail can be fitted on the wall side or side opposite the ladder and that every specified anchor can reach a suitable location.
- Walk the room in use. Open the bedroom and closet doors, approach and climb the ladder, and extend the trundle without moving other furniture. A taped outline exposes conflicts before delivery.
Common measurement failures and how to correct them
Measuring to the highest ceiling point
Symptom: The frame clears the room’s average height but contacts a beam, slope or light fitting. Correction: Use the lowest point directly above the upper mattress and repeat measurements across the bed’s full length.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Using mattress dimensions as the footprint
Symptom: The mattress fits, but posts, ladder or side rails hit a wall, radiator or door casing. Correction: Replace the mattress figures with the manufacturer’s assembled length and width, including all permanent projections.

Checking only the closed position
Symptom: Drawers or the trundle cannot open, or an open drawer blocks the bedroom door. Correction: Measure the fully extended projection and retain the full access clearance in front of it.
Adding a thicker mattress for comfort
Symptom: The sleeping surface rises close to the guardrail. Correction: Use a mattress at or below the stated maximum thickness and recheck the 5-inch margin. Do not rely on a thinner mattress used during an initial fit check.
Placing the ladder on the wrong side
Symptom: The ladder faces a wall, radiator or narrow passage, or the continuous guardrail cannot be installed on the wall side. Correction: Test every approved ladder orientation on the taped floor plan and follow the assembly instructions for the wall-side rail.

Ignoring trim and fixed equipment
Symptom: The bed cannot sit where measured because a baseboard, outlet, vent or heater projects into the footprint. Correction: Measure from finished surfaces and subtract the projection before comparing with the assembled dimensions.
Final go/no-go checklist
- The lowest ceiling point above the bed has been measured, including beams, slopes, fans and lights.
- The mattress-top clearance meets your chosen planning target—about 70 cm for a younger child or 80–90 cm for a teenager—at that lowest point.
- The assembled frame length and width fit at baseboard level with posts, ladder or stairs and trim included.
- Bedroom and closet doors open fully in the bed’s closed and operating positions.
- There is about 50–60 cm of clear floor in front of the ladder, or the manufacturer’s specified access space if greater.
- A pull-out trundle, if present, has about 90 cm of clear floor in front of it.
- The mattress matches the required size and stays within the manufacturer’s maximum thickness.
- The upper guardrail and relevant end structures remain at least 5 inches above the mattress surface at maximum permitted thickness.
- The wall-side or ladder-opposite guardrail can run continuously as required, with openings and anchors assembled exactly as specified.
- No window, radiator, vent, outlet, fan, light or sloped-ceiling feature creates an unresolved conflict.
If any item is unknown, pause the purchase or installation until the manufacturer supplies the missing assembled dimension or safety specification. A bed that fits on paper is not a successful fit unless every access component operates freely and the mattress-and-guardrail geometry remains compliant.
