A refrigerator fits only when its complete delivery envelope is smaller than the tightest point on the route. Measure the appliance with handles, hinges, packaging, and the required door or drawer swing; then measure every doorway, turn, stair, landing, elevator, threshold, ceiling obstruction, and destination clearance from unloading point to final position. Use the smallest opening and lowest headroom—not the room’s average dimensions—as the pass/fail test.

Start with the refrigerator’s complete envelope

Do not begin with the nominal cabinet width shown in a retailer listing. Obtain the selected model’s specification sheet and installation drawing, because the dimensions that determine delivery are often different from the box dimensions used in a product headline.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Record these dimensions before scheduling delivery

  • Maximum width: include handles, protruding trim, and any other part that cannot be removed for the move.
  • Maximum height: include hinges, hinge covers, feet, leveling hardware, and any top trim. Maytag specifically advises accounting for hinge covers and overhead obstructions.
  • Depth with doors closed: record the deepest point, not only the cabinet shell.
  • Door-open clearance: note the space needed for each door to reach the angle specified by the manufacturer. A wall or cabinet can stop the door before it reaches that angle.
  • Drawer-open clearance: measure the projection of freezer and crisper drawers, including the space needed for someone to stand in front of them.
  • Packaging dimensions: ask for the shipping-carton or wrapped-product dimensions. Packaging can be several centimetres larger than the unpacked appliance.

Samsung instructs customers to measure with doors and compartments fully open when checking fit. Treat that as a separate installation test from the narrowest dimension needed to carry the refrigerator through a doorway. A refrigerator may pass through an opening with its doors closed and still be unusable if a wall prevents the doors or drawers from opening after installation.

Separate three different fit questions

Question What to compare Why it matters
Can it travel through? Packaged or delivery envelope versus the smallest route opening and lowest overhead point The carrier must be able to move the wrapped appliance without striking walls, ceilings, fixtures, or railings.
Can it be positioned? Unpackaged appliance depth and width versus the room, cabinet, and turning space The crew needs room to rotate, slide, and level the refrigerator at its destination.
Can it operate? Manufacturer’s door, drawer, ventilation, and utility clearances A unit can reach the alcove yet fail to open, cool properly, or connect safely if installation space is inadequate.

Map the entire delivery route before measuring individual openings

Walk the path in the same direction the delivery crew will use. Start at the truck or unloading point and finish at the exact installation position. Frigidaire’s delivery guidance says to measure all doorways, hallways, staircases, and other openings and clear the path; measuring only the kitchen doorway is not enough.

Make a route inventory

  • Unloading area, driveway, gate, porch, or loading dock
  • Exterior doors and interior doors
  • Hallways and any point where cabinets, radiators, or furniture narrow the path
  • Thresholds, raised transitions, ramps, and uneven flooring
  • Every stair flight, landing, handrail, newel post, and ceiling above the stairs
  • Elevator entrance, car interior, door track, and ceiling height
  • Turns into the kitchen or utility room
  • Light fixtures, sprinklers, ductwork, beams, soffits, low ceilings, and cabinet overhangs
  • The final alcove, including side walls and the space required to open doors and drawers

Mark the route on a sketch or floor plan. Write a measurement at every change in width, height, direction, or surface. A route that is wide enough in a straight line can still fail at a 90-degree corner, a stair landing, or a low fixture.

Use a consistent measurement record

Location Record Measurement standard
Doorway Clear width and clear height Measure with the door fully open, from jamb to jamb and from finished floor to the lowest obstruction.
Hallway Usable width at every pinch point Measure between the nearest fixed projections, not between baseboards where a cabinet or radiator protrudes.
Turn Width on both approaches and usable corner depth Measure the inside corner, outside corner, and any object that limits rotation.
Stair Flight width, landing depth, riser-zone headroom, and rail projection Measure the narrowest section and the clearance above the appliance’s intended tilt or orientation.
Elevator Door opening, car width and depth, and ceiling height Use the usable opening and interior dimensions, allowing for door tracks and handrails.
Destination Alcove width, height, depth, side gaps, top gap, rear gap, and door swing Follow the refrigerator’s installation drawing rather than a generic cabinet dimension.

Measure doorways the way delivery crews use them

A door’s nominal size is not its clear opening. Measure the space left when the door is open, including the frame, hinges, stops, weather seals, and any hardware that projects into the path. LG’s fit guide specifies measuring from jamb to jamb to the nearest 1/4 inch. Record the result in that precision rather than rounding a tight opening up to the next inch.

Doorway procedure

  1. Open the door as far as it can safely go. If a door stop prevents a full 180-degree opening, leave the door in its normal delivery position and measure the usable gap.
  2. Measure horizontally between the left and right jambs at the lowest usable height. Check near the floor, at the appliance’s mid-height, and higher up if the frame or trim changes width.
  3. Measure vertically from the finished floor or threshold to the lowest point of the frame. Include closers, transoms, trim, and any light or security device above the opening.
  4. Measure the threshold’s height and depth. A raised threshold can reduce the effective opening when the appliance is on a dolly or tilted.
  5. Measure again with the door removed only if the delivery provider has confirmed that removal is permitted and identified who will remove and reinstall it.

Do not assume the crew will remove a door, hinges, railing, or trim. Ask the booked delivery service in advance whether those items may be removed, whether the crew performs the work, and whether the service accepts responsibility for reinstallation or damage. Built-in refrigerators and integrated panels may have additional handling rules.

Check turns, hallways, and overhead obstacles

Width alone does not describe a turn. The refrigerator needs enough space to rotate while one end clears the inside corner and the opposite end does not strike a wall, cabinet, banister, or fixture.

Measure a 90-degree turn

  • Measure the straight-run width before the corner.
  • Measure the straight-run width after the corner.
  • Measure the depth from the inside corner to the opposite obstruction on both approaches.
  • Identify whether the appliance must be tilted, stood on end, or rotated with one corner leading.
  • Record the height of the ceiling, soffit, light, or sprinkler directly over the turning area.

LG’s fit guidance specifically calls out turns, stairs, and low-hanging fixtures. A hallway can pass a flat measurement yet fail because the appliance’s packaged depth creates a sweep wider than the corridor while it turns. Check the route with the refrigerator’s maximum packaged width and depth, not just its cabinet dimensions.

Komelon SL2825 Self Lock 25-Foot Power Tape
  • AUTOMATIC LOCK - Self locking mechanism allows blade to lock automatically and retract at the push of a button.
  • NYLON COATED BLADE - Provides maximum blade protection.
  • IMPACT RESISTENT CASE - ABS plastic with rubber over mold protects the case from accidental drops.
  • STUD MARKINGS - Printed every 16 inches.
  • HIGH CARBON STEEL - Provides the most durable blade and retraction spring.

Account for fixed projections

Measure around handrails, newel posts, radiators, wall guards, door closers, cabinet handles, counters, and baseboard returns. Temporarily movable furniture should be removed rather than treated as part of the available width. Fixed items belong in the measurement and in the delivery plan.

Stairs, landings, and elevators need their own clearance check

Stairs combine narrow width, changing direction, overhead limits, and a requirement to control the appliance while it is tilted. Measure the full flight, not just the first and last step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stair measurements

  • Clear stair width between walls and between the wall and the most projecting handrail or baluster
  • Landing width and depth at the top, bottom, and every intermediate turn
  • Headroom measured above the route where the refrigerator will be tilted
  • Ceiling slopes, beams, light fixtures, smoke detectors, and sprinkler heads
  • Railings or guards that cannot be temporarily removed
  • Thresholds and changes in floor level immediately before and after the stairs

Samsung’s US room-of-choice delivery instructions list a maximum of three flights of stairs. Frigidaire directs customers to contact its call center for more than three flights. Those limits concern the service offered by the named provider, not a universal physical limit; confirm the policy for the carrier, address, appliance type, and booked service before delivery day.

Elevators and shared buildings

Measure the elevator’s clear door opening and interior car dimensions. Check the door sill, interior handrail, protective padding, and the height available when the refrigerator is upright. Reserve the elevator and confirm building rules for delivery times, floor protection, and use of service entrances. A building’s elevator capacity or access policy can cancel a physically possible route.

Allow for packaging and the crew’s working space

The route must fit the product as it arrives, not only after unpacking. LG’s 2026 Refrigerator Pre-Purchase & Installation Checklist advises leaving 5–10 cm (1.9–3.9 in) between the packaged product and the delivery path, including hallways and stairs. Treat that as a planning margin around the packaged refrigerator; it is not a substitute for the model’s exact carton dimensions or the carrier’s handling requirements.

Compare the packaged width, depth, and height with every route measurement. If a carton is wider than a doorway, ask whether the provider will unpack the unit before that point and where the packaging will be handled. Do not cut or remove packaging yourself unless the delivery service has approved the procedure and the appliance can remain protected during the move.

Use the tightest-point test

Create a simple pass/fail table with one row for every route restriction. The route passes only when the appliance envelope plus the required handling margin is no greater than the usable opening at that location.

Test Use this appliance value Use this route value Pass condition
Door or hallway width Maximum packaged width, or the approved unpacked width Smallest clear width at that point Appliance value and handling margin fit within the clear width.
Overhead clearance Packaged height or the height reached while tilted Lowest ceiling, fixture, beam, or frame No contact occurs in the planned orientation.
Turn Width, depth, and diagonal sweep of the envelope Both approach widths plus corner depth The envelope can rotate without striking fixed objects.
Stair or landing Envelope in the carrier’s approved orientation Narrowest stair width and smallest landing The crew can control the load without a rail or ceiling conflict.

Prepare floors and thresholds before the truck arrives

The destination floor should be firm and level. Remove rugs, loose mats, furniture, stored materials, and anything that can catch a wheel or reduce the path width. Frigidaire and LG both direct customers to clear the route; LG also includes floor protection in its delivery checklist.

Coordinate floor protection

  • Tell the carrier what finished surfaces are present, such as hardwood, tile, stone, resilient flooring, or newly installed material.
  • Ask what floor protection the service supplies and where it will be placed.
  • Agree in advance on protection for the route, corners, thresholds, and the final appliance position.
  • Keep the floor dry, level, and free of construction debris before the crew arrives.
  • Photograph existing conditions if the property is newly built or recently renovated, and document any pre-existing damage with the carrier.

Do not use a rug or loose sheet as an improvised sliding surface. It can bunch at a threshold or allow the appliance to move unpredictably. Use only protection and moving equipment approved by the delivery provider.

Verify the final installation clearances

Passing the route does not prove that the refrigerator will fit its cabinet opening or function correctly. Use the selected model’s installation manual as the controlling document. Generic guidance is useful for an early check but cannot replace model-specific minimums.

Common ventilation and side-space guidance

Source guidance Clearance stated How to use it
KitchenAid refrigerator dimensions guide Generally 1–2 inches behind and 1/2–1 inch at the sides and top Use only as general planning guidance until the model manual confirms the required gaps.
Samsung US buying guidance Many models need 2–4 inches around the unit, with model-specific minimums Check the exact model’s installation drawing; do not apply the range universally.
Frigidaire current delivery and installation guide 3–4 inches of extra width beside adjacent walls or cabinets for door opening Reserve the side space where the door must swing, even if the cabinet opening itself is wide enough.

KitchenAid notes that refrigerator doors may project about 3 inches beyond cabinet fronts. Measure the door’s actual projection and the clearance to an island, opposing counter, wall, or traffic path. Check that drawers can open fully and that a person can stand in front of them.

Confirm height, depth, and leveling space

  • Measure the cabinet opening from the finished floor to the lowest overhead cabinet or soffit.
  • Check whether the refrigerator’s leveling feet or rollers change its final height.
  • Measure rear clearance for ventilation, the power cord, and any water connection.
  • Confirm that the wall is plumb and the floor is level enough for the manufacturer’s leveling procedure.
  • Leave the specified space for doors, drawers, handles, and hinge movement rather than pushing the cabinet tight to the wall.

Check water, power, and delivery-service requirements

Utility conditions can prevent installation even when the physical route works. For icemaker or dispenser installation, Frigidaire’s current delivery and installation guide requires a working shutoff valve, a 1/4-inch stainless-steel line, and a connection within 6 feet on the same floor. Confirm the exact requirement for the selected model and service before the appointment; do not assume an existing line is acceptable.

  • Locate the shutoff valve and verify that it operates before delivery day.
  • Measure the line route and distance to the refrigerator’s connection point.
  • Keep the connection accessible after the refrigerator is in place.
  • Confirm the outlet location and that the power cord will not be crushed behind the cabinet.
  • Ask whether the service connects utilities, levels the unit, removes packaging, hauls away the old refrigerator, or handles built-in models.

Door removal, haul-away, built-in handling, floor protection, and stair service vary by retailer, carrier, location, and order type. Obtain the commitments in writing on the delivery order or service confirmation.

A practical measurement workflow

Use this sequence when planning a delivery on a construction or renovation project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Freeze the model. Record the exact model number and obtain its current specification sheet, installation drawing, door-swing diagram, and packaging dimensions.
  2. Record the appliance envelope. Write down maximum packaged and unpackaged width, height, depth, door-open projection, drawer-open projection, hinge-cover height, and any required tilt orientation.
  3. Walk from unloading to destination. Follow the actual route and list every door, hallway pinch point, turn, threshold, stair, landing, elevator, and overhead obstruction.
  4. Measure doorways and openings. Open each door, measure jamb to jamb to the nearest 1/4 inch, record clear height, and note thresholds and removable components.
  5. Measure turns and stairs. Capture widths on both sides, corner depth, landing dimensions, rail projections, headroom, and low fixtures.
  6. Apply the packaged-product margin. Compare the route with the packaged envelope and the 5–10 cm (1.9–3.9 in) path space advised by LG’s 2026 checklist.
  7. Prepare the floor. Remove movable obstacles, clear debris, establish the protection plan, and make sure the destination is firm and level.
  8. Check the installation alcove. Compare cabinet, side, rear, top, door, and drawer clearances with the model manual; use generic manufacturer guidance only as a preliminary screen.
  9. Verify utilities and service limits. Confirm stairs, door removal, haul-away, built-in handling, water-line, outlet, elevator, and floor-protection policies with the booked provider.
  10. Recheck immediately before delivery. Construction work, temporary storage, a newly installed handrail, or a changed door position can invalidate an earlier measurement.

What to do when a measurement fails

The doorway is narrower than the packaged refrigerator

Do not rely on force or an improvised angle. Ask the carrier whether unpacking at an approved location, removing the refrigerator doors, or removing the building door is permitted. Confirm who performs each task and who is responsible for reassembly and damage. If no approved method creates a safe envelope, change the delivery route or select a model with a smaller envelope.

The straight hallway fits but the turn does not

Re-measure the corner with all fixed projections included. Check whether the refrigerator can be rotated in a different orientation without exceeding the manufacturer’s handling limits. A wider alternate route, temporary removal of a door or railing, or a different appliance may be safer than attempting a tight turn.

The stairs meet the width but headroom is too low

Identify the exact point of conflict and the orientation in which the carrier plans to move the appliance. Ask the provider whether the appliance may be tilted there and whether the service permits that stair route. Remove only obstructions approved by the building owner and carrier; otherwise, use another route or delivery method.

The refrigerator reaches the alcove but the doors hit a wall

Use the model’s door-swing drawing and measure the side clearance from the hinge line to the adjacent wall or cabinet. Frigidaire’s guidance calls for 3–4 inches of extra width beside adjacent walls or cabinets for door opening, but the exact model requirement controls. Reposition the appliance, modify the cabinet opening, or choose a hinge configuration that the installation manual supports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The route is clear but the floor or utility setup is not ready

Postpone delivery rather than allowing the crew to work over debris, an unprotected finished floor, an inaccessible shutoff valve, or an unverified outlet. The cost of rescheduling is usually lower than repairing a damaged surface or discovering that installation cannot be completed.

Delivery-day checklist

  • Exact model and current installation drawing are on site.
  • Route measurements identify the narrowest opening, tightest turn, smallest landing, and lowest overhead point.
  • Doorways are open to their measured position and agreed removals are assigned.
  • Rugs, furniture, tools, packaging, and construction debris are out of the route.
  • Floor and corner protection are available as agreed with the carrier.
  • Elevator reservation and building access instructions are confirmed where applicable.
  • Stair count and carrier limits match the booked service.
  • Water shutoff, approved line, outlet, and connection access are ready if required.
  • Destination clearances allow ventilation, leveling, door swing, and drawer operation.
  • Someone authorized to approve route changes is present when the crew arrives.

Recheck the selected refrigerator’s current installation manual and the booked delivery service immediately before ordering. Clearances, packaging, door-removal policies, stair limits, and utility requirements are model-, retailer-, carrier-, and location-specific.
