You can make the Ring alert on your phone or Ring Chime spooky, and you can have a compatible doorbell play a seasonal Quick Reply to visitors. However, you generally cannot replace the standard electronic sound produced by the physical Ring Video Doorbell itself.
The right setup depends on which sound you want to change: the phone alert, an indoor Ring Chime, or the automated message visitors hear through the doorbell speaker.

Which Ring sound do you want to change?
| Audio path | Who hears it? | Can it be made spooky? |
|---|---|---|
| Physical Video Doorbell ringer | Visitors outside | Generally no custom replacement tone |
| Ring Chime or Chime Pro | People inside the home | Yes, if a seasonal tone is available |
| Ring app alert | You on your phone or tablet | Yes, through App Alert Tones |
| Quick Reply | Visitors outside through the doorbell speaker | Yes, using a selectable seasonal message |
These are separate audio paths. Changing a Chime tone does not change what visitors hear from the outdoor doorbell.

- Set up in a snap — Simply plug Chime (3rd Gen) into a standard wall outlet for easy setup.
- Sleek, elegant design — Curved edges and slim profile create a modern look that fits your space.
- Customizable sound profiles — Personalize tones, volume, and snooze settings.
- Open the Ring app.
- Tap the Menu icon.
- Tap Devices.
- Select your Video Doorbell.
- Tap Alert Settings.
- Tap App Alert Tones.
- Choose the tone for doorbell rings.
- If desired, choose a different tone for motion alerts.
Ring supports separate sounds for doorbell rings and motion alerts. A good Halloween setup is a spooky tone for an actual ring and a clearly different sound for motion. That way, repeated movement near the front door does not make every notification sound like someone has pressed the button.
Menu names can vary slightly by app version, device, and region. Ring’s current alert-tone guidance is available in its support instructions.
Change the indoor Ring Chime sound
A Ring Chime or Chime Pro gives people in the home a dedicated indoor alert. Configure it separately from the phone notification:

One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open the Ring app.
- Tap the Menu icon.
- Tap Devices.
- Select your Ring Chime or Chime Pro.
- Tap Audio Settings.
- Tap Chime Tones.
- Select the event, such as a doorbell ring or motion alert.
- Preview the available sounds.
- Choose a Halloween or other seasonal tone if one appears.
- Adjust the volume and tap Save.
Seasonal tones are not necessarily available year-round or on every device. Ring may release them around the relevant holiday, so select a tone only if it appears in your app.
The Ring Chime (3rd Gen) is an optional plug-in accessory with adjustable volume and separate doorbell and motion notifications. Ring’s U.S. product page listed it at $34.99 when checked on August 18, 2026. It adds an indoor alert but does not change the outdoor doorbell’s normal ringer.

Make visitors hear a spooky response
If your goal is for trick-or-treaters to hear something at the door, use Quick Replies. This feature plays a preset spoken response through the Video Doorbell’s outdoor speaker after someone presses the button.
- Open the Ring app.
- Tap the Menu icon.
- Tap Devices.
- Select your Video Doorbell.
- Tap Smart Responses.
- Tap Quick Replies.
- Turn the feature on.
- Set the response time to Right away or choose a delay from 2 to 20 seconds.
- Tap Quick Reply Message.
- Choose a seasonal greeting if one is available.
- Tap Save.
Ring says Quick Replies itself does not require a subscription, although recorded-event storage is a separate matter. Seasonal messages can vary by model, language, country, app version, and account configuration. Ring lists the first-generation Ring Video Doorbell as incompatible with Quick Replies; see its support page for compatibility details.
A Quick Reply is a preset spoken message, not a replacement doorbell chime and not an uploaded MP3 or custom sound-effect file. If you choose a delay, the response will not play until that delay has elapsed. For a fast Halloween greeting, use Right away.
Can you change the actual outdoor Ring doorbell sound?
Usually, no. Ring’s App Alert Tones affect your phone, and Chime Tones affect a Ring Chime or Chime Pro. Neither setting normally replaces the electronic ringer produced by the physical Video Doorbell when a visitor presses its button.
Quick Replies are different: they send an automated spoken message through the doorbell speaker, but they do not replace the doorbell’s normal electronic ring. Ring’s community guidance makes this distinction between app alerts, Chime tones, and the physical doorbell ringer clear: Ring community guidance.

Some older Halloween articles mention spooky examples such as a witch cackle or creepy laugh. Treat those as examples of seasonal app, Chime, or Quick Reply options—not proof that the outdoor ringer itself can be replaced. Seasonal names and catalogs may change.

If you do not have a Ring Chime
You can still use App Alert Tones on your phone at no additional hardware cost. A Chime is optional and is most useful when several people need to hear the alert, the phone is often muted or out of reach, or you want a louder shared indoor sound.
Do not buy a Chime expecting visitors outside to hear its tone. It is an indoor accessory. If you specifically want a custom sound outside, a separate weather-safe speaker may be used as an independent Halloween prop, provided it does not obstruct the camera, create a trip or electrical hazard, or sit where it can be easily stolen. It will not be integrated into Ring’s doorbell audio controls.

An existing in-home chime is not automatically equivalent to a Ring Chime. Ring distinguishes between mechanical chimes, which use a bell and hammer, and digital chimes, which play electronic sounds.
Compatibility and the correct in-app setting depend on the doorbell and wiring. Where applicable, Ring instructs users to select the correct Mechanical, Digital, or No Chime/None setting. Check Ring’s in-home chime compatibility list before changing settings. Some models, including Ring Video Doorbell Wired and Peephole Cam, are not compatible with in-home chime kits.

Do not change doorbell wiring just to obtain a Halloween sound. The app or an optional plug-in Chime is the simpler seasonal solution. Ring’s hardwiring guidance explains that incorrect chime configuration can affect operation.
If the Halloween option is missing
Seasonal choices may be unavailable because they have not yet been released, have been withdrawn after the holiday, or are not supported by the selected device or region. Try these steps:
- Update the Ring app.
- Close and reopen the app.
- Open the correct device page.
- Check App Alert Tones for the Video Doorbell.
- Check Chime Tones under the Chime or Chime Pro.
- Confirm that the Chime is online.
- Check Smart Responses for Quick Replies.
- Confirm your doorbell model and language or regional settings.
- Save the setting and test it at the door.
If a feature that was previously available has disappeared, contact Ring support. Do not assume that every Halloween tone or message remains available throughout the year.
Test the setup before Halloween night
- Save the phone’s App Alert Tone.
- Save the Chime Tone separately if you use a Chime.
- Press the doorbell once.
- Confirm what the phone, indoor Chime, and outdoor speaker each do.
- Trigger a motion event and verify that its sound is distinct.
- Check whether the Quick Reply plays immediately or after the chosen delay.
- Restore your normal tones after Halloween if you prefer.
Previewing a sound in the app does not prove that every audio path is configured. Test from outside the door so you know exactly what visitors will hear.

For most Ring owners, the most reliable combination is:
- A spooky App Alert Tone for doorbell rings.
- A different, less dramatic tone for motion alerts.
- A spooky Chime Tone if a Ring Chime or Chime Pro is installed and the seasonal option is available.
- A Quick Reply set to Right away if you want visitors to hear a seasonal greeting.
- A complete test before trick-or-treaters arrive.
This setup creates a Halloween effect indoors and gives visitors an optional spoken greeting without incorrectly suggesting that Ring can replace the physical outdoor ringer.
