Use paint specifically formulated for glass and follow its manufacturer’s full preparation and curing instructions. With Pébéo Vitrea 160, that means degreasing the glass, letting the paint dry for 24 hours, then curing it in an oven according to the maker’s schedule. Keep the decoration off the eating surface and rim: Pébéo says to paint only areas that will not contact food.
Choose glass paint with a stated curing method
A general-purpose paint or a product labeled “glass paint” is not enough to establish how it should be cured. Choose a product whose instructions explicitly cover glass and give a preparation and cure method. Pébéo Vitrea 160 is one example: the manufacturer describes it as water-based paint for glass and provides instructions for firing it. Do not assume another brand uses the same schedule. Prepare and cure a Vitrea 160-painted dish
- Check the dish’s oven guidance. Pébéo’s cold-oven start and in-oven cooling are intended to limit thermal shock; they do not establish that every glass dish is safe to heat to 160°C (325°F). Check the dish maker’s guidance before firing it.
- Keep paint off food-contact areas. Decorate only surfaces not intended to contact food. For a dish, leave the eating surface and rim unpainted.
- Degrease the glass. Pébéo says alcohol or soapy water is sufficient. Let the surface dry before painting.
- Apply the paint and allow it to dry thoroughly for 24 hours. Pébéo states, “It is important to allow the paint to dry thoroughly for 24 hours before firing.” The maker warns that firing before the paint has dried can cause water in the film to boil, creating bubbles or blisters. This is manufacturer guidance, not an independent test. Read the Pébéo FAQ on drying and firing.
- Fire the dish. Place it in a cold oven. Once the oven reaches 160°C (325°F), fire it for 40 minutes.
- Let it cool in the oven. Pébéo recommends this to limit thermal shock. Follow the product’s instructions rather than transferring the hot dish straight to a cool surface.
What “dishwasher-safe” means here
Pébéo says Vitrea 160 decorations are dishwasher-safe when its recommendations are followed. That is a conditional manufacturer claim, not a promise that decoration will last forever or resist every kind of wear. The maker identifies inadequate degreasing, diluting the paint with water, and incorrect firing time or temperature as possible reasons for poor dishwasher performance. Its FAQ on dishwasher performance and food contact gives further guidance.
The maker also says to keep decoration away from surfaces intended to contact food. Its note about accidental contact does not change that instruction. Use the dish only as decorated and cared for according to the paint manufacturer’s directions.
