To make glass shower doors shine, remove mineral deposits and soap scum with a vinegar-based cleaner, wipe with a soft cloth, rinse well, and dry the glass. Try one of these two methods, but check the door manufacturer’s care instructions first—coated glass and nearby stone or metal finishes may need special care.
Before you clean: identify the residue and protect nearby surfaces
Hard-water spots are mineral deposits left behind when water dries. Calcium, magnesium, and iron are among the minerals associated with hard water; older deposits may become permanent. Soap scum forms when oil- or grease-based ingredients react with minerals in water. The two kinds of residue can appear together. Good Housekeeping explains both and recommends a vinegar-and-dishwashing-liquid mixture for soap scum as well as hard-water spots.
- Check the manufacturer’s instructions before using vinegar, a cleaner, or a scrubber on coated or decorative glass.
- Keep vinegar off natural stone, including marble, and protect metal finishes from contact. Rinse the glass thoroughly after cleaning.
- Ventilate the bathroom. Never mix vinegar with bleach, peroxide, or other chemicals, and avoid steel wool and abrasive tools.
Method 1: Clean with equal parts vinegar and water
This simple option is suited to routine cleaning and mineral spots. Martha Stewart’s guide recommends starting with dry shower doors. Martha Stewart published these steps on March 18, 2026:
- Mix one part white vinegar with one part water in a spray bottle. You may warm the vinegar slightly, but do not boil it.
- Spray the dry glass and leave the solution for about 10–15 minutes. For tougher spots, leave it for up to 30 minutes.
- Wipe gently with a soft sponge or microfiber cloth. For stubborn residue, the guide suggests using a little baking soda on the sponge; use a light touch and test a small area first if the glass is coated or decorative.
- Rinse with warm water, then dry with a clean microfiber cloth or squeegee.
Method 2: Add dishwashing liquid for soap scum
If the buildup includes soap scum, Good Housekeeping’s guide, updated January 13, 2026, recommends adding dishwashing liquid to the vinegar solution:

- Mix equal parts distilled white vinegar and water with one teaspoon of dishwashing liquid.
- Spray the glass and wait 15 minutes.
- Wipe with a microfiber cloth, rinse thoroughly, and buff dry.
- For heavy buildup, the guide suggests a delicate scrubber or eraser-type sponge. Confirm the door maker allows the tool before using it.
Keep shower glass clear between deep cleans
Use a squeegee after each shower and keep the glass dry to reduce new water spots and buildup. VIGO’s care guide, updated August 2026, recommends a weekly deeper clean with a mild, non-abrasive, ammonia-free glass cleaner. Follow the instructions for your particular door: VIGO advises applying cleaner to a cloth rather than spraying hardware, then rinsing thoroughly. Manufacturer rules can vary, so use the door maker’s guidance for coated glass and finishes.
If you choose a commercial glass cleaner, check that it is compatible with your door. Avoid abrasives and harsh chemicals unless the manufacturer specifically permits them.
