You can make compost at home with an open pile or a bin—buying a bin is optional. Combine suitable food scraps and yard waste with dry browns, keep the pile moist and airy, and let it mature until it is dark, crumbly, cool, and earthy-smelling. The seven steps below explain how to start and maintain a typical backyard pile; the timeline varies with conditions and care.

1. Choose a convenient site and setup

Pick a well-drained place that is easy to reach throughout the year and close enough to a water source. Sun or shade can both work if you manage moisture. An open pile is a valid setup; a bin is optional. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s home composting guidance and UConn Extension guide describe several workable approaches.

Setup May suit you if… Trade-offs to consider
Open pile You have room and want a simple setup. It is exposed, so consider appearance and pest containment; turning is accessible.
Enclosed bin You want a tidier, more contained place for scraps. Consider cost, capacity, and how easily you can turn or mix the contents.
Tumbler You have limited space and want a rotating container. Monitor moisture and add enough dry browns; scraps without them can make it too wet.

No system is best for every household. Compare available space, expected volume, cost, neatness, pest protection, ease of aeration, and the attention you are willing to give. The University of Maryland Extension’s home composting guide also discusses setup choices. If you have no outdoor space, check whether worm composting or a municipal or community food-scrap collection is available locally.

2. Keep browns and greens on hand

Composting relies on carbon-rich browns, nitrogen-rich greens, water, and oxygen, as the EPA explains. Keeping dry browns nearby makes it easy to cover each fresh food-scrap addition.

3. Keep unsuitable materials out

A typical backyard pile is not designed to safely break down every household or garden waste. Leave out:

  • Treated or painted wood.
  • Herbicide-treated plants, aggressive weeds with mature seeds, and diseased or pest-infested plants.

These materials can attract animals or may not break down safely in a backyard pile. Some may be accepted by commercial composting facilities, but check the facility’s rules rather than assuming they are allowed in your local collection.

4. Prepare ingredients and start with a coarse base

Break up or chop large, tough scraps and bulky plant material; smaller pieces generally break down faster. Start with a loose base of bulky browns, such as twigs or wood chips, about four to six inches deep. The EPA recommends this coarse base to help air move through the pile and absorb excess liquid.

Compost Tumbler Bin Composter Dual Chamber 43 Gallon (Bundled with Pearson's Gardening Gloves)
  • ✅Speed Up Composing Process: More advanced models use rotating to bring oxygen to the center of the bin and paddles inside the chamber to help mix and aerate the composting materials when turned. These improvements or modifications are designed for one reason: to speed the composting process.
  • ✅How do Compost Tumblers work? Simple. You load them with green and brown waste from your yard and kitchen. When full, you give them time to work, in other words, heat up. Turning a compost pile mixing the organic materials and the organisms it contains with heat-producing oxygen is the traditional method of keeping the process going full steam. By turning the tumbler, the organic materials are mixed and infused with fresh oxygen.
  • ✅Easy to Access Finished Compost: Just Slide the door open and take the organic fertilizer out when the compost is ready. When a check reveals the compost is complete —and this can happen in a matter of weeks —the same access that allowed you to fill the tumbler lets you empty it. Now is the time to spread the results.
  • ✅Dual-Bin Design: The dual bin design takes a different approach to the continuous-use composted concept, Two bins are set side-by-side into a single rotating chamber. Thickly insulated compartments conserve the heat generating by the decaying matter, and this greatly speeds the process. This design also allows you to add food waste to one chamber while the other is composting.
  • ✅Totally Organic and Money-Saving: If you're looking for a fast, convenient way to compost your kitchen throw-outs, grass clippings, and organic yard waste, our outdoor kitchen compost bin is just right for you! The Compact Compost Tumbler quickly recycles it into nutrient-rich compost.

5. Build the pile with balance and moisture

Add greens and browns in layers or batches. A practical starting recipe is at least two to three parts browns for every one part greens, measured by volume. The EPA gives this guideline, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture also presents the same starting ratio. It is a useful starting point, not a precise measurement you need to maintain ingredient by ingredient.

Cover each food-scrap addition with four to eight inches of dry leaves or other browns. Add water as needed until the material feels like a wrung-out sponge: moist, not soggy. Too little moisture slows decomposition; excess water can leave the pile wet and short of air.

6. Monitor, aerate, and correct problems

Turn or mix the pile occasionally when it needs air; doing so generally speeds decomposition. There is no single turning schedule that suits every household pile. Use the pile’s condition to guide adjustments, and keep food scraps covered with browns to discourage rodents.

What you notice What to do
Bad smell or soggy material Add dry browns and loosen or turn the pile to restore air.
Dry material Add water and turn or mix so moisture spreads through the pile.
The pile is not heating Mix in greens and turn it. A cool pile can still compost, usually more slowly.
Pests around food scraps Cover scraps with browns and keep unsuitable materials out.

7. Cure the compost and use it when mature

There is no guaranteed finish date. The EPA says a well-maintained pile may finish in about three to five months, while an untended pile may take a year. UConn Extension’s April 2026 guide says many backyard piles take six months to a year or longer, depending on season and management. Judge readiness by the compost itself, not the calendar.

Compost is ready when it has cooled, most original scraps are no longer recognizable, and the material is dark, loose or crumbly, and earthy-smelling. The EPA advises curing it for at least four weeks after the pile stops heating and visible scraps are gone. Use mature compost as a soil amendment or mulch—not as a complete substitute for soil.
