Decorate a clean, smooth-sided glass jar with pressed real leaves or flexible artificial leaves, then light it with a battery-operated LED tealight. Decoupage medium holds the leaves in place; keeping some glass uncovered lets more light through.
What you’ll need
- A clean, smooth-sided glass or Mason jar
- Thin, flexible artificial leaves, or fresh real leaves pressed flat
- Decoupage medium, such as Mod Podge
- A sponge brush or paintbrush
- A battery-operated LED tealight
- Optional: ribbon, raffia, or twine
Choose and prepare the leaves
Artificial leaves
Choose thin leaves that bend easily around the curve of the jar. Stiff leaves are harder to smooth against the glass.
Real leaves
Use fresh, colored leaves and press them flat before crafting. Summit Metro Parks recommends pressing leaves for a week in its project directions. Flat leaves are easier to position and less likely to lift at the edges.
Make the leaf-covered jar
- Clean and dry the jar. Wash the outside and let it dry completely so the decoupage medium can adhere to the glass.
- Work in a small area. Brush a thin layer of decoupage medium onto one section of the jar.
- Place and smooth a leaf. Set the leaf onto the wet medium and smooth it from the center toward the edges to reduce wrinkles and trapped air.
- Seal the leaf. Brush another coat of medium over it, taking care to coat the edges. Repeat with the next leaf, working around the jar.
- Build the finish. Apply at least two additional coats to help secure the edges, allowing each coat to dry fully as directed on the medium’s package.
- Let the jar dry completely. Drying times differ by project and product; do not rely on a single fixed time. Add optional ribbon, raffia, or twine only after the finish is dry.
- Add the light. Place a battery-operated LED tealight inside the jar.
Arrange leaves for the glow you want
For a brighter lantern effect, use fewer leaves and leave more glass uncovered. Overlapping layers reduce the amount of light that passes through the jar. A fuller, more layered look will produce a dimmer glow.

Use an LED tealight, not an open flame
Choose a battery-operated LED tealight for this decorated jar. Leaves and craft medium cover the glass, and the cited project instructions recommend a battery-operated candle; they do not establish that a leaf-covered jar is safe for an open flame. The National Fire Protection Association’s 2025 Candle Safety sheet recommends flameless candles and says, “Keep candles at least 1 foot (30 centimeters) away from anything that can burn.” NFPA also reports that more than half of all candle fires start when burnable items are too close to a candle. That distance is general candle-safety guidance, not a test of this craft.
