To make an outdoor wooden snowman, choose a solid board, planks, or plywood to suit the size and display spot; draw and cut the shape; sand it; apply an exterior finish; then add details and a stable support if it will stand upright. A small board figure is a compact project, while plywood works for a larger porch sign or yard silhouette.
Choose a design and size
Pick a format based on the space available, the wood you have, how much shaping you want to do, and how the finished piece will be displayed. Published dimensions below describe individual project plans, not required sizes.

The cited plans do not establish comparative costs, service life, or performance in specific climates, so choose by scale and construction needs rather than assuming one format is cheaper or more durable.

- A jigsaw with a suitable wood-cutting blade
- Clamps and a stable work surface
- Sandpaper or other appropriate sanding and shaping tools
- Primer and exterior paint, or exterior stain and sealer
- Brushes, plus optional fabric, buttons, or wood scraps for decoration
- Fasteners and a rear support or brace if the figure will stand upright
Harbor Freight lists a jigsaw, wood jigsaw blade, sanding and shaping tools, and a glue gun for its compact project; those are examples from its guide, not tested tool recommendations. Use tools according to their manufacturers’ current instructions.
Lay out the snowman and cut the wood
- Draw the outline. Sketch the snowman directly on the board or plywood. For a larger figure, draw a small design on graph paper and enlarge it square by square, as in the DIY Dreamer plan. Mark separate pieces such as a hat brim or nose if your design calls for them.
- Secure the workpiece. Place it on a stable work surface and clamp it before cutting. RONA specifically recommends clamping a plank to a workbench for stability and a cleaner cut.
- Cut the shape. Use a jigsaw and appropriate wood-cutting blade to follow the outline. Home Depot Canada calls for proper safety gear, including eye protection, while cutting.
- Sand and shape. Smooth rough faces and cut edges. Shape details such as a rounded head only if they are part of your design.
Prime and finish for outdoor display
Use an exterior paint or an exterior stain and sealer intended for the application. Follow the coating maker’s instructions for surface preparation, number of coats, drying time, and suitable weather conditions.

For plywood yard art, Home Depot’s instruction sheet calls for sanding as needed, one to two coats of primer, and coating the plywood edges to limit moisture entry. It then describes decorating with water-based latex paint after the primer dries. These steps do not guarantee that a plywood panel will withstand every outdoor condition.
RONA’s plank tutorial suggests two coats of white exterior paint or exterior stain and sealer. DIY Dreamer’s four-foot plywood example uses white, black, and orange outdoor paint. Treat these as project-specific directions and check that your chosen products are appropriate for your wood and intended exposure.

Add features and plan a stable support
Once the finish is ready for decoration, add facial features, a hat, scarf, buttons, or other accents. The project guides describe options such as fabric, buttons, and wood scraps; attach details securely and use materials suitable for the display conditions.
A large cutout intended to stand upright needs a support suited to its placement. Home Depot’s yard-art instructions describe a rear support strip. A Colorado State University Extension measuring-stick activity shows graduated plywood circles attached from behind with 1-by-2 boards, and describes two ways to support the assembly:

Those examples are not wind-load ratings or engineered instructions. Match the support to the figure, ground, and installation, and do not assume a particular arrangement is safe in every location.

Place the snowman where its support is stable and where it will not obstruct a walkway. When it is not in use, store it in a dry, protected location if practical; Home Depot’s yard-art sheet recommends this approach. The cited plans do not establish a specific outdoor lifespan or maintenance interval.
