Grow a pancake plant (*Pilea peperomioides*) in bright, indirect light, keep it warm, and water when the top few centimetres of potting mix begin to dry. A pot with drainage and a modestly sized container help prevent soggy compost—the main watering-related risk.

What is a pancake plant?

The pancake plant, also known as the Chinese money plant or coin plant, is Pilea peperomioides, a compact, clumping houseplant native to Yunnan in southern China. Its round leaves sit on long stalks attached near the centre of each leaf. The NC State Extension plant profile describes the species and its common names.

Where should you place it?

Choose a warm spot with bright, indirect light. The Royal Horticultural Society’s general guidance for Pilea is to “Grow best in bright light, but not direct sun.” Its growing guide suggests a warm room near a north-, east- or west-facing window, or a south-facing window with the plant set back from strong summer sun. Keep it away from cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C (50°F).

Too little light can lead to leggy growth. If the stems stretch and the plant looks sparse, move it to a brighter position while avoiding harsh direct sun.

How and when should you water it?

Water by checking the compost, not by following a fixed weekly schedule. Touch the top few centimetres: when that layer starts to dry, water the soil thoroughly enough for excess to drain from the pot. Empty the saucer or outer pot so the roots do not sit in standing water. You can also lift the pot; a lighter feel compared with just-watered soil can help you judge when it is drying.

As growth slows in winter, the plant usually needs less water. Persistently wet compost can cause root rot, so let the surface begin to dry between waterings and make sure the container drains freely. The RHS guide and NC State Extension profile both identify overwatering as a risk.

What pot and compost should you use?

Use peat-free multipurpose compost and a pot with drainage holes. When repotting, choose a container only a couple of centimetres wider than the existing pot or root ball. A much larger pot holds more damp compost around the roots, which can take longer to dry.

Check the roots each spring and repot if they have become congested; this is often needed every couple of years, but root growth and growing conditions determine the timing. The RHS gives this guidance in its Pilea growing guide.

How do you propagate a pancake plant?

Separate a base offset

Offsets growing at the base are the simplest route. When an offset is large enough to handle, carefully separate it from the parent plant and pot it individually in suitable mix. NC State Extension lists offsets as a propagation method, and the RHS describes using them as well.

Try a stem cutting or leaf

NC State Extension also lists stem cuttings. The RHS says individual leaves may root in water or moist compost, though a detached leaf will not necessarily establish. Spring or early summer, when the plant is actively growing, is the best time to propagate, according to NC State Extension.

How do you troubleshoot common problems?

  • Leggy or stretched growth: Inadequate light is a likely cause. Move the plant to brighter indirect light, as advised by NC State Extension.
  • Persistently wet soil or root rot: Check that the pot drains and remove water from the saucer or outer pot. Allow the surface layer of compost to begin drying before watering again. The RHS and NC State Extension warn that overwatering can cause root problems.
  • Pests: Monitor for spider mites, mealybugs, fungus gnats and scale insects, which NC State Extension lists among pests affecting the species. The cited profile does not set out a species-specific treatment protocol.

Is the pancake plant safe for pets and children?

NC State Extension describes Pilea peperomioides as safe for pets and children. The ASPCA also names Chinese money plant in a general list of safe succulents, rather than in a dedicated exact-species database entry. “Safe” does not mean that eating a plant cannot cause discomfort: the ASPCA notes that even non-toxic plants may cause mild stomach upset, and common names can be ambiguous. If an animal eats a plant and becomes ill, contact a veterinarian or an appropriate poison-control resource.
