You cannot increase a kitchen’s floor area without changing its walls, but you can make the room feel substantially more open and work more smoothly. Start with the free changes: clear and group countertop items, edit open display, organize the storage you already have, and correct dark corners. Then add targeted organizers, layered lighting, and a visually continuous palette only where those changes solve a real problem.
The goal is not to make every surface white or to remove useful cabinets. It is to reduce visual interruptions while preserving the storage and work area your household actually needs.

What “larger” means when the walls stay put
These ideas change perception, circulation and usability; they do not add square footage. A clearer sightline from the doorway, an uninterrupted worktop and better light can make the same footprint feel less crowded. The effect is qualitative: the design guidance available for this subject does not provide controlled measurements or a guaranteed percentage increase in perceived size.
The National Kitchen & Bath Association has been reported as defining a small kitchen as 150 square feet or less. That figure comes from a circa-2012 search-result snippet, not a universal standard or current building regulation. A kitchen larger than that can still feel cramped if storage, lighting or circulation are poorly resolved.

Use the following test before buying anything: stand at the entrance and note what catches your eye first, where shadows collect, and which objects block the longest view across the room. Those observations determine whether your first intervention should be decluttering, storage, lighting or finishes.
Start with a no-cost visual reset
Countertops are the largest uninterrupted planes in many kitchens. Every appliance, packet and utensil left on them creates another visual stop. Removing objects is useful only if they have a dependable home; otherwise the cleared surface becomes a temporary pile and the room returns to its previous state.
- Empty the counters completely. Put every item on a table or in a box rather than making decisions one object at a time. This reveals how much worktop you actually have and exposes areas that need cleaning or repair.
- Sort by frequency. Return only items used daily or at nearly every meal to the work zone. Move occasional equipment into a cabinet, pantry or another designated location.
- Group what remains. Keep a small set of frequently used tools together so they occupy one deliberate area instead of spreading across the room. A tray can define that group without adding another permanent display.
- Edit open shelves and rails. Keep only objects that are useful and easy to keep orderly. An overfilled rail or shelf adds visual noise and can make the wall feel heavier than closed storage.
- Use existing lighting deliberately. Turn on every current fixture at night and identify the dark corners, shadowed worktops and reflective glare. Clean diffusers and replace failed lamps before deciding that new fittings are required.
Organized cabinets make it easier to keep the worktop clear, a point emphasized in IKEA UK’s guidance on making a small-space kitchen appear larger (IKEA UK guidance). The practical sequence is therefore storage first, display second—not simply putting everything into attractive containers on the counter.
Make existing storage work harder
Storage should match the way you cook. A beautifully organized cabinet that is difficult to reach will not keep the worktop clear for long. Before purchasing accessories, measure the inside width, depth and height of each drawer or cabinet, note hinges and plumbing obstructions, and check the accessory’s stated dimensions. Renters should also confirm whether drilling or adhesive mounting is permitted.
Use drawers for the smallest high-use items
Dividers and cutlery trays stop utensils from spreading across a drawer and make the available volume legible. Assign one location to each category—cutlery, preparation tools, wraps or spices—rather than creating a mixed “miscellaneous” drawer that quickly overflows. Leave enough clearance for the drawer to close without forcing items against the front or runners.
Deep drawers can hold pans or appliances, but stack only what you can lift without disturbing the entire column. If an item is used every day, place it near the work surface where it is prepared; if it is used seasonally, store it higher or farther away. The objective is fewer objects on display, not maximum packing density.

Use a rail or hooks selectively
A wall rail with hooks or containers can move small tools off the worktop while keeping them reachable. Reserve it for a short list of genuinely frequent-use items. Because a rail leaves everything visible, it needs a weekly edit: remove duplicates, damaged tools and objects that have migrated there for convenience.
Check the wall construction and the fixing method before installation. Tile, plasterboard, masonry and existing services require different fasteners and precautions. Follow the accessory manufacturer’s load and fixing instructions; do not assume that an adhesive strip or a single screw is suitable for a heavily loaded rail.
Keep open storage intentionally sparse
Open shelves can make a wall feel less enclosed than a run of solid fronts, but only when the contents form a calm, repeatable arrangement. Limit the number of finishes and colors on display, leave visible gaps, and keep the heaviest objects low. If the shelf becomes a staging area for mail, packaging and rarely used equipment, closed storage will usually produce a clearer field.
Layer light instead of simply adding brightness
General illumination and task lighting solve different problems. Ambient light lets you see the room as a whole; task light illuminates the work surface where shadows from your head or wall cabinets are most troublesome. A bright ceiling fitting cannot reliably eliminate those local shadows.
| Lighting layer | Purpose | Questions before choosing equipment |
|---|---|---|
| General room light | Creates an even baseline so corners and circulation paths are visible. | Are existing lamps working, clean and aimed effectively? Is the switch location convenient? |
| Task light | Lights preparation, washing and cooking surfaces with fewer hand and cabinet shadows. | Where are the actual work zones? Can wiring reach them without unsafe extensions? |
| Cabinet or under-cabinet light | Adds focused light beneath or inside cabinetry and can make a dark run feel more usable. | Will the fitting be surface-mounted or recessed? Is there a suitable power route and a way to access it for maintenance? |
Cabinet spotlights, including dimmable options, are one category described by IKEA; Homes & Gardens recommends combining task and ambient lighting. Treat both as design guidance rather than a measured guarantee that a particular fitting will enlarge the room.
Recommended Free Tools
- Mark the work areas that need light: chopping, sink, hob and appliance stations.
- Test existing lamps at the times you use the kitchen. Look for reflected glare on glossy fronts as well as shadows.
- Choose the least disruptive installation that solves the problem. A plug-in fitting may suit a renter; a hard-wired system may be cleaner during a permitted renovation.
- Confirm electrical capacity, cable routing, switching and heat clearances with the product instructions. Have fixed wiring altered by a qualified electrician where local rules require it.
- Use dimming only if the fitting and control are compatible. A lower setting can reduce glare and make the room feel calmer after work is finished.
Use color and finishes to reduce visual breaks
There is no universally correct paint color for a small kitchen. IKEA states that white cabinet fronts reflect light and can create the illusion of more space. Interior designer Terri Brien, quoted by Homes & Gardens, says: “To make a small kitchen feel larger, we recommend keeping the overall palette light and warm.” Both are options, not a requirement to use an all-white scheme.

A light, warm palette can help a dim room feel more welcoming, while a darker accent can add depth when most of the composition remains open and balanced. The practical question is how many abrupt changes your eye encounters: cabinet color, wall color, worktop, backsplash, flooring and hardware can either read as one continuous field or as a series of separate blocks.
Favor continuity where the room breaks
Livingetc’s design discussion emphasizes continuity in color and surface treatment to reduce visual interruptions. You might use closely related tones on walls and tall cabinetry, or repeat one finish in a backsplash and worktop. The aim is visual connection, not perfect matching. Sample finishes in the actual kitchen because daylight, artificial light and adjacent rooms alter how colors read.
Use reflectivity with control
Reflective surfaces can bounce light, but glare and fingerprints can make a small room feel busier. Compare samples at eye level and near the worktop, then view them under both daytime and evening lighting. A modest reflective backsplash or satin cabinet finish may provide useful lift without turning every surface into a highlight.
Keep contrast purposeful
Contrast helps define zones and can give a flat room character. Concentrate it on one element—such as an island base, a short backsplash run or hardware—rather than distributing unrelated dark accents throughout the kitchen. If the accent competes with the worktop, appliances and open storage, it will increase visual fragmentation instead of adding depth.
Decide whether upper cabinets are helping or weighing the room down
Reducing heavy visual mass at eye level can open a sightline, but removing all upper cabinets is not automatically an improvement. Households with many dishes, food supplies or limited alternative storage may end up with more counter clutter after the removal.
Keep closed storage and lighten its appearance
Organize the interiors, clear the tops, and consider a lighter or more continuous finish when replacement is already planned. Closed doors hide visual variety and protect contents from grease and dust. This is often the most practical route when storage demand is high.

Replace only a strategic section
If one short run blocks a key view, investigate whether that section can become a shallow shelf, rail or open niche while the rest remains closed. Check structural support, services and the effect on ventilation before altering cabinetry. Open storage must have a maintenance plan; otherwise it becomes a display of unfinished tasks.

Do not trade storage for an empty wall without a plan
Before removing cabinets, list every item they contain and identify its new location. If the replacement storage is farther from the work zone, the daily convenience cost may lead to counter storage that cancels the visual gain.
Improve sightlines without changing the footprint
Small kitchens often feel tight because objects interrupt the longest visual route. After decluttering, look for reversible ways to keep that route clear: align frequently used equipment in one work zone, keep door and drawer fronts unobstructed, and avoid placing tall decorative objects at the entrance or beside a window.
Group appliances by task so you are not crossing the room repeatedly. Keep the landing space beside the refrigerator, sink and cooking surface usable, subject to the clearances required by your appliances and local codes. If a door, drawer or appliance currently collides with another, resolve that functional conflict before adding decorative changes; a kitchen that is easier to move through generally feels less crowded.
Use rugs, stools and freestanding carts cautiously. Each can be useful, but each also introduces an object at floor level. Keep circulation widths and appliance door swings in mind, and remove anything that becomes a permanent obstacle.

Compare approaches by trade-off, not by trend
| Approach | Typical cost level | Reversibility | Visibility of stored items | Best fit | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Edit belongings and rearrange existing storage | Free | High | Mostly concealed | Every kitchen; the correct first step | Without assigned homes, clutter returns. |
| Drawer dividers or cutlery trays | Purchase required | Usually high | Concealed | Small tools and utensils that migrate to counters | Measure drawers and account for runners and obstructions. |
| Wall rail, hooks or containers | Purchase and mounting required | Often moderate to high | Visible | A small set of daily-use tools | Overloading creates visual noise; wall suitability matters. |
| Under-cabinet or cabinet lighting | Purchase and installation required | Depends on wiring and mounting | Not applicable | Shadowed worktops and dark corners | Check power, heat, switching and maintenance access. |
| Paint or finish changes | More labor and materials | Moderate | Not applicable | Rooms with abrupt color or surface breaks | Samples can look different in changing light; no palette works everywhere. |
| Reducing upper-cabinet mass | Potentially substantial labor | Low once altered | More visible if replaced with open storage | A specific blocked sightline with spare storage elsewhere | Removing useful capacity can recreate countertop clutter. |
A staged plan that protects your budget and storage
Stage 1: Observe and edit
Photograph the kitchen from the entrance and from the main work position before changing anything. Remove non-daily items from the worktop, edit displays and test the existing lights. Live with the reset for several days; the objects that return repeatedly identify the storage problem to solve.

Stage 2: Fit organizers to proven problems
Measure only the drawers and cabinets that caused the reset to fail. Add dividers, trays or a small rail where they will keep a specific category off the counter. Reassess after a week before adding more accessories.
Stage 3: Correct useful darkness
Install task or cabinet lighting where the observation showed a real shadow. Decide between plug-in and hard-wired options according to tenure, access and local electrical requirements. Aim and dim the fittings after installation so brightness does not become glare.
Stage 4: Refine the visual envelope
Only after storage and lighting work should you choose paint, backsplash or cabinet-finish changes. Test samples in daylight and at night, and favor continuity where the eye currently stops abruptly. Use contrast in one deliberate location rather than adding many small accents.

- Buying containers before measuring: return to the cabinet dimensions, including hinges, plumbing and drawer hardware, and select accessories that fit without reducing usable capacity.
- Replacing counter clutter with rail clutter: keep a limited tool set on the rail and store duplicates out of sight.
- Choosing white automatically: compare light and warm alternatives, sample them in place, and consider how glare and maintenance affect the room.
- Removing upper cabinets for an empty look: map every displaced item first and confirm that the remaining storage can absorb it.
- Adding only a brighter ceiling lamp: identify the work areas and add task light where shadows occur; general illumination and task illumination are different needs.
- Installing fittings without checking the wall or power route: verify the substrate, fixing method, cable path and permissions, and use qualified electrical help for fixed wiring when required.
- Expecting a measured size increase: describe the result as a more open or less crowded appearance. The cited sources are editorial design guidance, not controlled experiments.
When a construction professional is worth involving
Bring in a qualified contractor, electrician or kitchen installer when the change affects fixed wiring, cabinetry anchorage, ventilation, plumbing, tiled walls or appliance clearances. A professional can also assess whether a proposed cabinet removal is carrying a service, hiding pipework or compromising the fixing of adjacent units.
For a rental, ask the landlord or managing agent before drilling, repainting or changing lights. For an owned home, confirm permits and electrical requirements with the relevant local authority or trade professional. Keep the brief specific: preserve the footprint, improve a named sightline or work zone, retain a stated amount of storage, and use reversible solutions where possible.
That brief prevents a common failure mode in small kitchens: spending on a dramatic visual change that removes the capacity needed to keep everyday items off the counters.
What the available guidance can—and cannot—prove
IKEA UK, Homes & Gardens and Livingetc present practical design recommendations and designer commentary on organization, lighting, color, reflective finishes and visual continuity. They do not establish a universally optimal paint color, a guaranteed lighting product, or a measured percentage by which a kitchen will feel larger. Apply the advice conditionally to your storage load, natural light, budget, tenure and permissions.
