The build described here uses 3/4-inch MDF with a routed mounting slot; the slot and fasteners must be laid out for your actual miter gauge, since there are no universal hole or bolt dimensions.
Why add an extension to a miter gauge?
The short fence supplied with many gauges offers limited support. As WOOD Magazine contributing craftsman and educator Jim Heavey puts it, “The standard miter gauge that comes with your saw is generally a little too small to do anything with.” A longer, straight fence supports the workpiece and offcut, gives you a surface for a stop block, and can help reduce chipout on the back of a cut. A lower-edge rabbet can also provide a place for sawdust.
The fence is sacrificial: the blade may score or cut into it, so it can be shifted to expose a fresh section rather than discarded after one kerf. WOOD Magazine’s adjustable design attaches directly to the miter gauge and moves with it when you change the angle.
Choose the fence style that fits the work
| Design | Attachment and use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed sacrificial fence | Fastened to the gauge; supports stock and offcuts and can carry a stop block. | Kerfs and wear accumulate in the fence. Fine Woodworking’s 2006 example is about 20 inches long by 2-1/2 inches tall; those are example dimensions, not a universal specification. Fine Woodworking |
| Sliding wear-resistant fence | Moves toward or away from the blade; replaceable hardboard faces provide fresh wear surfaces. | Requires a design that allows the fence to slide and stay secure. WOOD Magazine |
| Miter-gauge-mounted MDF extension | Bolts to the gauge and travels with it; this is the design built below. | Its mounting slot, hardware and clearances must match the particular gauge and saw. WOOD Magazine |
| Table-mounted crosscut platform | A separate plywood support can increase capacity for wider stock. | This is a different project: the platform must be level with the saw table, and its cleats and slot must fit the actual saw. Woodworkers Source describes 3/4-inch-wide by 3/8-inch-deep as a common miter-slot size, not a guaranteed measurement. Woodworkers Source |
Materials and tools
- 3/4-inch MDF for the fence, as used in WOOD Magazine’s adjustable design.
- A router table and a keyhole bit or T-slot bit to form the mounting slot.
- Bolts and nuts compatible with the existing holes in your miter gauge.
- A square and measuring tools for laying out the slot and checking the fence.
- Optional stop block for repeat cuts.
Plywood or stable hardwood can also be used for other sacrificial-fence designs; SawStop lists plywood, MDF and solid-wood cutoffs as possible materials. The material does not remove the need to confirm fit and safe blade clearance.

Build and fit the extension
- Measure the gauge before cutting or routing. Locate its mounting holes and measure their spacing, the available clearance around the gauge body, and where the fence will sit relative to the blade. Choose compatible bolts and nuts from those measurements; the published design does not specify universal hardware or hole dimensions.
- Cut the MDF fence to suit your saw and work. WOOD Magazine’s instructions use 3/4-inch MDF but do not set a universal length or width. Size it to support the workpiece without interfering with the blade, gauge, table or angle settings.
- Lay out and route the mounting slot. Position the slot along the back of the fence so it aligns with the holes in your gauge. Route it with a keyhole bit; a T-slot bit is another option. If the bolt cannot slide through the slot as intended, the WOOD Magazine tutorial says to widen it with another router-table pass.
- Attach the fence with compatible hardware. Pass the bolts through the routed slot and the gauge’s existing holes, then secure them with nuts. Adjust the fence position and tighten it so it stays straight and stable. If your gauge has no mounting holes, do not drill it automatically: first check its construction and the manufacturer’s guidance to determine whether modification is appropriate.
- Check the full range of movement before cutting. With the saw unplugged, move the gauge through the intended positions, including 90- and 45-degree settings. Confirm the fence, fasteners and gauge clear the blade and do not bind, rock or shift.
- Add a stop block if repeat lengths matter. Attach it to the fence where it will register the workpiece without entering the blade’s path. Recheck clearance at the angle and position you plan to use.
Use the fence with the correct blade protection
Set up the guard or riving knife according to the saw manufacturer’s instructions for the specific cut. SawStop notes that when a sacrificial miter-gauge fence is not cut off at the blade, the blade-guard assembly should be replaced with the riving knife for cuts that pass fully through and beyond the blade. Follow the instructions for your saw rather than assuming one guard arrangement suits every operation. SawStop’s miter-gauge fence guidance
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Maintain and reposition the fence
As the blade marks or cuts into the sacrificial face, loosen the mounting hardware and shift the fence to present fresh material, then retighten it and repeat the clearance check. For a design intended to avoid cutting the main fence face, WOOD Magazine’s wear-proof version uses replaceable hardboard faces that slide toward or away from the blade.
