How to Make a Gravel Fire Pit That’s Safe, Stylish, and Durable

Gravel can form a stable fire pit base or surround, but safe construction starts with local rules, level ground, a suitable fire enclosure and fuel-specific installation instructions.

You can use gravel to create a stable, noncombustible base or surround for a fire pit, but the fire itself needs a suitable wood-burning ring or masonry enclosure. Before building or lighting, check local rules for permits, fuel, burn bans and required clearances: there is no single setback that applies everywhere. Gas fire pits are different engineered systems, and ordinary gravel is not automatically safe inside their enclosures.

Choose wood or gas before planning the build

This guide’s straightforward DIY approach is for a wood-burning pit. A suitable steel ring or heat-rated masonry enclosure contains the fire, while gravel is used around it or beneath an appropriate installation. A gas fire pit needs to be assembled according to its appliance instructions and applicable gas code; do not transfer wood-pit construction assumptions to a gas burner enclosure.

Consideration Wood-burning pit Gas fire pit
Enclosure A noncombustible ring or masonry system designed for wood fires; use a compatible liner where required. An approved enclosure and burner system installed to the appliance manufacturer’s instructions.
Role of gravel May serve as a suitable nonburning ground surface or surrounding hardscape when the site is prepared correctly. Do not assume gravel is suitable inside the enclosure or burner pan; use only media specified for the exact appliance.
Airflow and installation Follow the fire-ring or masonry system’s installation instructions. Follow the burner manual’s ventilation, enclosure and media requirements. Firegear’s instructions, for example, call for free-flowing air beneath the enclosure and cross ventilation, prohibit filling the enclosure cavity with gravel, rock or sand, and warn against stone or river rock. Read the Firegear installation instructions.

Check local rules and clearances first

Ask your local fire authority or building department which rules apply to your specific fire pit. Confirm permit requirements, permitted fuel, property-line and structure clearances, burn bans, and any additional restrictions for wildfire-prone areas. Rules differ by jurisdiction and by device type.

The 2024 International Fire Code says recreational fires should not be within 25 feet of a structure or combustible material, and portable outdoor fireplaces should not be operated within 15 feet; exceptions and local adoption affect how those provisions apply. Those figures are not automatic residential requirements everywhere. New York City’s residential fire pit rules, for example, specify 10 feet from combustible waste, combustible materials or combustible building surfaces, with nearby openings addressed separately. Use the rule adopted where you live, not a distance borrowed from another jurisdiction. See the 2024 International Fire Code, Chapter 3 and your local authority’s guidance.

Ideal for backyard gatherings, camping trips, patios, BBQs, resorts, and rustic lodgings—perfect for creating a cozy atmosphere.
  • Portable Design & Usage Tips: This lightweight yet sturdy fire pit ring is easy to move and set up anywhere. For ground protection, simply place a layer of sand or stones underneath. Designed to comfortably seat 6–8 people, it’s your go-to centerpiece for warm, memorable outdoor socializing.

Choose a level, open site

Pick level ground with room for the pit, safe access and seating. Keep it away from buildings, fences, branches, dry vegetation and other combustible materials, including overhead fuels. Avoid placing a movable pit on a slope. Clear the area around and above the fire pit; the Country Fire Authority in Victoria recommends a clear three-metre area around and above it. That is practical guidance from an Australian fire authority, not a U.S. code requirement. See the CFA’s fire pit safety guidance.

Raleigh’s fire department describes four feet as optimal spacing for fixed seating. Treat this as seating guidance from Raleigh, not a universal fire-code setback; follow local requirements and keep people and furnishings outside the required clearance. Prepare a stable gravel base or surround

  1. Mark the footprint. Lay out the pit and the surrounding area, allowing room for the ring or masonry system and the clear zone required by local rules.
  2. Remove combustible and organic material. Clear grass, leaves, roots and debris from the work area. Establish a stable, nonburning surface such as gravel, bare earth, paving or concrete.
  3. Build the base to the chosen system’s directions. Base depth and construction depend on the product and site. For its described block fire pit installation, Belgard specifies a level, debris-free site and 4–6 inches of compacted aggregate. That measurement applies to Belgard’s system, not every fire pit. Consult Belgard’s installation guidelines.
  4. Compact and check level. Use the tools and preparation method required by the selected system. A level, stable base helps prevent an uneven build; do not treat decorative gravel laid over loose soil as a substitute for a specified compacted base.

Build the wood-burning enclosure for heat

Use a fire ring or masonry system intended for the fuel and designed to contain the fire. The metal ring or fire-facing materials take direct heat; the gravel surround does not replace them. If you build with blocks, use the manufacturer’s installation guide for excavation, base, course layout and any cap installation.

Belgard’s guide calls for excavation slightly wider than the pit, a level first course and staggered joints; it describes optional caps secured with heat-resistant adhesive. It recommends a metal liner or fire-rated brick to protect blocks from high temperatures and warns that overheating can damage them. These details are specific to the Belgard system, so follow the selected product’s own directions rather than assuming another block system uses the same materials or method.

Finish the surround without compromising safety

Spread gravel as ground cover or hardscape only where it is appropriate to the design, keeping the required combustible-free area around the pit. Choose a stable finish that will not migrate into the fire enclosure or obstruct access. Do not put ordinary river rock or gravel in a gas burner pan or enclosure unless the exact appliance manual explicitly permits that media.

For a wood-burning pit, select a fitted spark screen sized for the enclosure opening. Keep water or another suitable extinguishing method within reach. Raleigh’s guidance also recommends a screen that fits the pit. Check its fire pit safety advice.

Use and extinguish the pit carefully

  • Check current local restrictions and burn bans before lighting; do not use the pit when conditions or local rules prohibit it.
  • Stay with a burning fire and keep children, pets and combustible items away from the fire area.
  • Do not use accelerants. The Country Fire Authority (Victoria) says: “Never use petrol, alcohol or any other accelerant to start or fuel the fire.”
  • Use only the fuel the pit is designed for and avoid overloading or overheating a masonry enclosure.
  • Fully extinguish the fire before leaving the area, following local fire-safety guidance.

Before you light it

  • Local rules, permits, allowed fuel and current burn status have been checked.
  • The pit is on stable, level, noncombustible ground with required clearance around and above it.
  • The enclosure, liner and construction method match the chosen system’s instructions.
  • A wood-burning pit has a fitted spark screen; a gas system follows its exact ventilation and media specifications.
  • An appropriate extinguishing method is at hand, and someone will supervise the fire until it is fully out.

For a local example of requirements covering noncombustible construction, a cleared mineral-soil or gravel area, overhead clearance and post-use cleaning, see Wahkiakum County’s fire pit standards. They are local standards, not universal construction dimensions.
