Use the manufacturer-approved pack and charger, keep the battery clean and dry, protect it from heat and temperature extremes, and use the maker’s storage charge range. Do not assume that every battery should be stored full, stored empty, or left on a charger indefinitely.
The right routine depends on the battery chemistry, model and charger generation. The practices below separate generally supported precautions from brand-specific instructions so you can protect a battery without applying one manufacturer’s limits to another platform.

Start with the battery chemistry and manual
Look at the label on the pack, the drill documentation or the charger instructions before changing your routine. The same advice does not apply to every chemistry or platform.

Record the exact model number and voltage. A drill platform may accept several pack capacities, but a pack that physically fits is not automatically the correct electrical or charging match. The manual is the authority for charge limits, storage conditions, indicator lights and service procedures.

Why the manual matters
Manufacturers can specify different charge-level ranges, temperature limits and charger behaviors. STIHL’s United States storage guidance, for example, recommends storing its battery packs at 40–80% charge and at 50–68°F ambient temperature for maximum life, while also telling owners to follow the exact battery and tool instructions. Those figures are STIHL-specific, not a universal specification for all cordless drills.
Use the correct battery and charger
Avoid the most preventable source of battery stress: charging a pack with equipment that is not approved for that platform. DEWALT advises using authentic batteries with its tools and approved charging devices. A HiKOKI drill manual likewise says to recharge only with the specified charger.
- Match the platform. Confirm the battery model, voltage and connector family against the drill manual.
- Use the specified charger. Check the charger label and manual rather than relying on a universal charger’s plug or a pack that merely slides into place.
- Inspect before charging. Do not charge a pack that is wet, cracked, leaking, unusually swollen or otherwise damaged. Follow the manufacturer’s service instructions for a suspect pack.
- Charge in a suitable location. Use a cool, dry, ventilated area away from direct sunlight and liquids, within the temperature limits in the manual.
- Let the charger finish its normal cycle. Use the charger’s indicator and instructions. Do not interrupt charging repeatedly just to obtain a small amount of runtime unless the manual permits that practice.
Should I leave my drill battery on the charger?
There is no single answer that is safe to apply to every cordless drill. The supplied sources establish that you should use the approved or specified charger, but they do not provide a universal rule for leaving every battery attached after charging. Charger generations differ, and some manuals give explicit instructions while others do not.
Follow the battery and charger manual first. If it does not clearly address unattended or extended connection, the conservative practice is to remove the pack after the normal charge cycle and store it as the manual specifies. Do not use an unapproved charger as a substitute for a platform-specific answer.

Keep heat, moisture and temperature extremes away
Heat is one of the clearest avoidable hazards for Li-ion packs. DEWALT advises storing and charging batteries in a cool, dry location and avoiding liquids and extreme temperatures. STIHL similarly recommends a dry place away from direct sunlight and tells owners to consult the product manual for exact conditions.
- Do not leave a pack in a hot vehicle, on a sunny dashboard or beside a heater. Move it to a shaded, dry place before charging.
- Keep the pack away from rain, wash water, concrete slurry and other liquids. A water-resistant tool does not make every battery or charger waterproof.
- Avoid charging or storing outside the stated temperature limits. The limits belong to the specific model; do not borrow a range from another brand.
- Allow a hot pack to return to the manual’s permitted temperature range before charging. If the instructions call for a service check after an extreme-temperature event, follow that procedure.
- Protect the terminals. Store the battery so metal tools, loose fasteners and other conductive objects cannot bridge the contacts.
Why a worksite routine matters
Construction work exposes batteries to sun, dust, dampness and rapid temperature changes. At the end of a shift, do not toss a warm pack into a closed toolbox with wet gloves or muddy hardware. Wipe off external dirt with the method allowed by the manual, let the pack dry naturally, and place it where it is secure and shaded. Never immerse a pack or use liquids on its contacts unless the manufacturer expressly instructs you to do so.
Store the pack at the maker’s recommended charge level
Long-term storage is different from preparing for the next hole or fastening job. Neither “always full” nor “always empty” is established as a universal rule by the supplied sources.

For STIHL battery packs

For other platforms
Read the battery and tool manuals for the manufacturer’s storage percentage, temperature, inspection interval and whether the pack should remain installed in the tool. If the documentation gives no long-term-storage percentage, do not invent one or apply STIHL’s range automatically. Keep the pack clean, dry, protected from sunlight and secure, then follow the maker’s stated check or recharge procedure.
Before seasonal or extended storage
- Identify the pack and confirm the manual’s long-term-storage instructions.
- Inspect the housing and terminals for damage, dirt or moisture.
- Charge or discharge only to the level the manual specifies; do not deliberately run a Li-ion pack flat as “conditioning.”
- Store it in the specified cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and conductive objects.
- When returning it to service, inspect it again and charge it only with the approved charger.
Do not condition a Li-ion pack by running it flat
STIHL states that Li-ion batteries do not have the NiCd “memory effect” and describes that phenomenon as concerning NiCd batteries. The supplied guidance does not establish that regularly completing a full discharge improves Li-ion lifespan. Therefore, do not schedule deep-discharge cycles as maintenance for a Li-ion drill pack.
For an older NiCd battery, use the instructions written for that model. Chemistry-specific advice is important: a routine that was once discussed for NiCd packs should not be presented as a Li-ion requirement.
Make each charge and work cycle less stressful
Battery life is affected by the conditions around charging and use, not just the number printed on the pack. These habits reduce avoidable abuse without promising a specific number of extra years or cycles.

- Use the right capacity for the job. If the platform offers compatible packs with different capacities, choose one that meets the job without forcing an undersized pack through repeated near-empty runs. Verify compatibility in the manual.
- Keep the drill and bit working efficiently. A dull bit, binding fastener or unsuitable speed setting can make the motor work harder. Select the speed, clutch setting and accessory recommended for the material and operation.
- Stop when the tool signals low charge. Do not keep pulling the trigger after the drill’s low-battery indication or obvious loss of performance. Swap to a charged, compatible pack and recharge the depleted one according to the manual.
- Give a hot pack time to cool. After demanding drilling or driving, place the battery in a cool, dry area before charging if it is outside the charger’s permitted temperature range.
- Keep contacts clean. Dirt on the battery or tool contacts can interfere with the connection. Use only the cleaning method allowed by the manufacturer, and never scrape, wet or short the terminals.
Clean and inspect the battery safely
Routine inspection
Before installing or charging a pack, check the case, latch, terminals and labels. Look for cracks, swelling, leaking material, burn marks, corrosion or a pack that no longer locks securely into the tool. Set aside anything abnormal and consult the manufacturer or an authorized service channel rather than attempting a home repair.
Cleaning
Keep the exterior and contacts free of dust and debris using the procedure in the manual. Do not spray cleaner into the pack, immerse it, open the housing or bend the terminals. A dry, clean storage location prevents contamination from becoming a charging or connection problem.
Transport and jobsite storage
Carry packs so the terminals cannot contact keys, screws or other metal items. Keep them protected from rain and direct sun during transport, and avoid leaving them loose in a truck bed or on a hot surface. A storage case may be convenient, but the supplied guidance does not establish that a special battery case is necessary for routine lifespan maintenance.
Recognize when the battery is at the end of useful service
A pack that charges but no longer provides enough runtime for the work may need service or replacement. The HiKOKI operating instructions identify battery life that becomes too short for practical use after charging as a reason to have the battery serviced or replaced.

Signs that warrant a service decision
- Runtime is consistently too short for the task even after a normal charge.
- The charger repeatedly reports a fault or will not begin its normal cycle.
- The pack becomes unusually hot, swells, leaks or shows physical damage.
- The battery no longer locks into the drill or its contacts are visibly damaged.
Do not treat a replacement as a routine upgrade. Replace only when the pack is no longer practical or safe, and select the replacement specified for the drill’s brand, voltage and platform. DEWALT’s guidance favors authentic batteries for its tools; that is a platform-specific compatibility and safety point, not a recommendation for a universal third-party pack.
What the available lifespan figure does—and does not—mean
STIHL Canada reports 1–3% annual capacity loss for its lithium-ion products in charging guidance indexed as published about two months before October 11, 2026. That is STIHL’s claim about its products, not a cross-brand cordless-drill statistic. It does not establish a guaranteed service life, cycle count or performance level for your pack.
No controlled comparative lifespan study or universal cycle-count estimate is established here. Avoid promises that a particular routine will add a fixed number of years or charges.
Troubleshoot common battery problems

Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a charger because the connector fits. Physical fit is not proof of electrical or platform compatibility.
- Leaving every battery on a charger indefinitely. The supplied sources do not establish one universal rule for all charger generations.
- Storing every pack fully charged or fully empty. Storage charge is manufacturer-specific.

When advice conflicts, use this order: the exact battery manual, the exact drill manual, the specified charger instructions, then general precautions that do not contradict them. That means keeping the pack clean and dry, avoiding heat and temperature extremes, using approved equipment and storing it securely are broadly sensible precautions; charge percentages, temperature windows and leave-on-charger rules must come from the platform that made your battery.
