Build a small paddle-powered boat with one capped two-liter bottle, two side floats and a rubber-band-driven paddle. The bottle forms the hull; the floats help it stay upright; and a twisted rubber band turns the paddle to push the model through water. Make: / Maker Camp describes the activity for ages 5 and up and estimates 30–60 minutes. It is a model for a tub or supervised pool—not a boat for carrying a person.

Materials and tools

  • One clean, empty two-liter soda bottle with its cap.
  • Two empty half-liter plastic bottles for side floats, also called outriggers.
  • Two wooden sticks or dowels, about 10–14 inches long; pencils can also work.
  • Two rubber bands large and rigid enough to span the support sticks and drive the paddle.
  • Two plastic food lids or enough sheet plastic to cut two paddle panels.
  • Tape, a ruler and scissors.

The bottles, plastic and sticks can be household reuses; no specialized boat kit is required. If cutting plastic with a craft knife rather than scissors, an adult should handle the cutting.

Build the boat

  1. Prepare the hull. Make sure the two-liter bottle is empty and clean, then screw its cap on securely. The capped bottle is the hull.
  2. Attach the support sticks. Tape one stick along each side of the bottle. Keep them opposite and aligned, with each stick overlapping the bottle and extending below it. The sticks should be parallel, with a gap between them for the paddle.
  3. Measure and make the paddle. Measure the gap between the sticks, then use the paddle-width and paddle-length formulas in Make: / Maker Camp’s Two Liter Soda Bottle Boat instructions. Cut the two plastic panels to those measurements. Slit and join the panels to form a cross, then tape the center joint firmly. Measuring from your actual stick spacing matters: the paddle needs to fit between the supports and turn freely.
  4. Mount the paddle. Stretch the two rubber bands across the support sticks and position the paddle between the loops. Secure it so the bands hold it in place while allowing it to rotate. If it catches on a stick or the bottle, adjust the mount before winding it.
  5. Add the outriggers. Tape one half-liter bottle to the outside of each support stick, on opposite sides of the paddle. Place them at similar positions so the boat is balanced from side to side.
  6. Wind and launch. Wind the paddle counter-clockwise over the top toward the boat’s right side, as shown in the Maker Camp instructions. Set the model gently into a tub or supervised pool and release the paddle.

Why the bottle boat floats and moves

Buoyancy: the hull displaces water

The capped, air-filled bottle has positive buoyancy. NOAA’s “Build a boat” activity explains the principle: “According to Archimedes’ Principle, the buoyant force is equal to the weight of the water displaced by the object.” In practical terms, the hull floats when the upward force from displaced water supports the boat’s weight. Adding weight or water changes that balance; the bottle’s volume, shape and contents all matter.

Stability: side floats resist tipping

The half-liter bottles are outriggers. Their separation across the boat helps it resist tipping, while unevenly placed floats or a lopsided load can make it list. Keep the outriggers positioned evenly and distribute any test weights across the boat rather than piling them on one side. NOAA’s activity also discusses how a boat’s width, depth and load distribution affect tipping and water entry.

Propulsion: the rubber band turns the paddle

Winding the paddle twists the rubber bands and stores energy. When released, the bands unwind and rotate the paddle; the paddle pushes against the water, moving the boat. Paddle dimensions, plastic type and mounting are useful variables to change when exploring how the model behaves.

Test and troubleshoot

Try the boat in a small tub first, where you can retrieve it easily. NOAA recommends gently placing a boat in a tub and adding test weights a few at a time while watching for tipping or water entry.

Pirate Ship in a Bottle Kit - Includes All Parts to Create a Mini Ship in a Bottle - VERY Challenging, Are You up for It?
  • Challenging Craft Project – Designed for hobbyists and puzzle enthusiasts who enjoy detailed and intricate builds
  • Unique Display Piece: Finished ship in a bottle makes a striking conversation starter for home, office, or study décor.
  • Great Gift Idea – Perfect for crafters, maritime collectors, and anyone who loves nautical history or hands-on projects
  • Skill-Building Activity: Encourages patience, fine motor skills, and creativity while delivering a sense of accomplishment.
  • The boat lists to one side: Check that the outriggers are at similar positions and heights, the sticks are parallel, and any added load is centered.
  • The hull sits low or floats poorly: Confirm the cap is tight. Remove unnecessary weight and make sure there is no water inside the hull.
  • The paddle barely turns: Check that it is not rubbing against the supports or hull, and that the rubber bands are positioned to hold and drive it. The paddle should rotate freely.
  • The boat moves weakly or veers: Inspect whether the paddle is mounted squarely and whether the support sticks and outriggers are balanced. Change one design feature at a time—such as paddle size or outrigger spacing—so you can see what affects the result.

These checks follow from the assembly and the boat’s basic mechanics; they are troubleshooting guidance, not measured performance claims.

Safety and simple experiments

This is a small model craft, not a human-carrying vessel. Use scissors where possible; if a knife or razor blade is needed, an adult should carefully do the cutting. Science Buddies gives that warning for its related bottle-boat activity and also calls for adult supervision during pool testing. Test in a contained space, supervise children near water, and retrieve the boat after testing so it does not become litter.

For a simple STEM comparison, alter one feature at a time: paddle size or material, distance between the sticks, spacing of the outriggers, or how evenly a small test load is distributed. Note whether the boat stays level, whether the paddle turns freely and whether the hull takes on water. The available project sources do not establish a speed, carrying capacity or guaranteed performance for this particular design.
