WOOD Magazine offers a free downloadable tablesaw miter sled plan built around two runners, track-mounted stops and a center safety channel. Use the plan’s own cut list and instructions for dimensions: its online summary does not provide the complete specifications, and the runners must fit your saw’s miter slots.

What the free WOOD Magazine plan includes

The WOOD Magazine plan, updated January 15, 2025, describes a sled guided by dual rails in the saw’s miter-gauge slots. Stops ride in tracks for repeatable positioning, and a channel down the center is intended to help keep hands away from the blade. The plan is presented as a free download.

Those features make it a starting point for repeatable angled cuts, but the plan’s web-page summary is not a substitute for its downloadable instructions. Follow those instructions for the cut list, dimensions and assembly sequence; do not assume measurements from another sled will suit this design or your saw.

Check runner fit against your saw

Miter-slot dimensions vary, so measure the slots on the saw you will use before making runners. Woodcraft’s construction guide recommends runners that slide freely without side-to-side play and are shallower than the slots, so they do not drag on the bottom. Its pencil-marking method can help identify high spots: mark the runner’s sides, slide it in the slot, then inspect where the marks rub away. Treat this as general fitting guidance, not a dimension specified for every saw.

Choosing runner material

UHMW plastic is one possible material. In an independent build account, a maker reports that UHMW runners slide smoothly but are flexible and need support to stay straight; the maker preferred metal runners for stiffness. That is one builder’s experience, not a measured comparison or a guarantee of how either material will perform on your saw. Check the plan’s material requirements and the runner’s fit before choosing.

Align the fence and verify with test cuts

A sled can fit its slots and still make inaccurate cuts if its fence is not aligned. An independent builder describes refining alignment with a five-cut method. For a different approach, the Woodpeckers StealthStop manual, revised July 11, 2023, recommends checking the fence against a square reference and verifying calibration with a test cut. Follow the setup sequence for the plan you build, then test on scrap before cutting project parts.

Compare sled features to the work you plan to do

Miter sleds are not all arranged alike. Before building, consider what you cut and how the sled will support and position it.

  • Runners: Check their count, material and fit against your saw’s slots.
  • Fence: Determine whether the design uses a fixed or adjustable fence and how you will check its alignment.
  • Stops: Consider where stops sit and whether their adjustment suits the lengths you need to repeat.
  • Workpiece support: Longer or shaped stock may benefit from hold-downs or support along its length.
  • Blade opening: Look at how the design supports the work and offcut near the blade.

For context, Fine Woodworking’s related molding-miter sled plan uses short and long fences, a ruler, an adjustable stop and hold-downs to support molding along its length. Kreg’s crosscut sled plan lists a 3/4-by-24-by-30-inch base and emphasizes precise fence alignment; it does not include zero-clearance-insert steps. Those are choices in other plans, not dimensions or parts to transfer automatically to the WOOD Magazine miter sled.

Understand the blade-area features and their limits

The featured plan’s center channel is intended to help keep hands away from the blade. Other builders and sled makers use different blade-area details for different purposes: one independent builder describes adding plywood fillers around the opening as a safety measure, while the Woodpeckers manual describes a zero-clearance block that helps carry the offcut past the blade and reduce tear-out. These features are not interchangeable, and none makes a table saw safe by itself. Use the plan as directed and follow safe table-saw practices while operating the sled.
