To make a biscuit joint, cut matching slots in two pieces of wood with a biscuit joiner (also called a plate joiner), apply water-based woodworking glue, insert the biscuits, bring the pieces together, and clamp the assembly while the glue sets. Accurate layout and a consistent reference face matter most: the biscuits help align the pieces during glue-up, but this joint is not a substitute for stronger joinery where a project needs it.
What a biscuit joint does—and when to use one
A biscuit joiner cuts shallow slots in two mating pieces of wood. A compressed wood biscuit sits in the paired slots with glue; moisture from water-based glue makes the biscuit swell. The result helps register and align the parts while the glue-up sets.
Biscuit joints are useful for panel glue-ups, cabinetry, and edge banding, and can be used with solid wood, plywood, MDF, and particleboard. They are valued for speed and alignment, but do not match the strength of a mortise-and-tenon joint. Consider the project’s load, stock thickness, and alignment needs before choosing this joint; avoid relying on it alone for heavily loaded or safety-critical construction.
Tools and materials
- A biscuit joiner or plate joiner with a sharp, serviceable blade.
- Biscuits that match the joiner’s depth setting and fit the stock. Common sizes are No. 0, No. 10, and No. 20. An Ozito manual gives approximate examples of 16 × 44 mm, 19 × 54 mm, and 25 × 60 mm respectively; dimensions can vary, so check the biscuits and your tool manual.
- Compatible water-based woodworking glue, often yellow PVA. Biscuit swelling relies on moisture, so do not assume every adhesive will behave the same way.
- Clamps suited to the workpiece and joint length.
- A pencil, square or straightedge, and scrap wood for a setup check.
- Eye and hearing protection, plus dust extraction where available.
How to make a biscuit joint
1. Lay out the joint and choose a reference face
Arrange the pieces in their final orientation and mark each biscuit position across both mating edges. Use the same reference face or edge for both pieces so the slots register consistently. Bosch recommends matching reference lines; the joiner’s fence and base may reference the work differently from one machine to another, so follow that model’s manual.
#1 Best Overall
- 6.5 amp, 10,000 rpm motor provides power for working in the hardest woods
- Dual rack and pinion fence ensure blade and fence are always parallel for accurate joints every time
- Integral one-piece fence is adjustable and tilts 0-90°
- Flush cuts can be made at 0° without removing fence
- 45-degree locating notch in fence allows indexing off the outside surface of a mitered joint
2. Set the joiner and check the setup
Choose a biscuit size and set the plunge depth to match it. Adjust fence height or angle if the joint requires it, following the tool manual. The slot must be deep enough for the biscuit without breaking through a visible face. A biscuit placed too close to the surface can swell and cause a bulge, so make a test slot in scrap when practical and check the fit before cutting the project pieces.
3. Secure the stock and cut matching slots
Clamp the workpiece so it cannot shift. Register the joiner’s center or reference mark to each pencil line, keeping the base or fence against the same reference surface. Start and plunge the tool as directed by its manual, then repeat at the corresponding marks on the mating piece. Keep hands away from the cutting path.
Rank #2
- Brushless motor provides powerful and consistent cutting performance for most common biscuit sizes
- Achieve accurate results with dual rack and pinion fence design along with tool-free depth, height, and bevel adjustments
- Depth selection knob allows users to easily adjust between #0, #10, #20 biscuits (biscuits sold separately)
- Integral fence allows users to quickly and easily adjust the bevel capacity from 0 -90°
- Paddle switch design accommodates left and right handed users
4. Dry-fit the pieces
Insert the biscuits without glue and bring the pieces together. Check that the joint closes, the faces align, and no slot has broken through a face. If a biscuit is too tight, inspect the depth setting and biscuit size rather than forcing it. Fix any setup or alignment issue before glue-up.
5. Apply glue and assemble
Apply compatible woodworking glue in the slots and along the mating joint surfaces, then insert the biscuits and bring the workpieces together. Work promptly: the usable assembly time depends on the adhesive, so follow its label rather than relying on a generic timing rule.

It works with standard #0, #10, #20 biscuits and creates Simplex, Duplex & Max joints, perfect for simple wood repairs, splicing and complex furniture construction.
- Fixed Baffle Precision: Equipped with a sturdy fixed baffle and intuitive depth adjustment block, this joiner ensures consistent, uniform cuts every time. The included auxiliary module reduces blade offset from the base plate, boosting overall cutting accuracy and control. It effectively prevents uneven cuts and misaligned joints for professional woodworking quality.
- All-In-One Kit: This all-in-one kit includes #0, #10 and #20 biscuits to cover all common wood joinery needs. The built-in dust collection bag captures sawdust and wood chips on-site to keep your workspace tidy and cut cleanup time. Suitable for home DIY repairs, daily woodworking and large furniture building projects.
6. Align, clamp, and let the glue set
Align the faces and clamp the assembly evenly so the joint stays closed without shifting. Keep it clamped for the adhesive maker’s stated clamping or setting time. Handle squeeze-out according to the glue instructions and the finish you plan to apply.
Safety and troubleshooting
- Unevenly closing joint: Check that both pieces used the same reference face and that the joiner’s reference mark was centered on each layout line.
- Biscuit will not fit before glue: Check biscuit size and plunge depth; do not force it into the slot.
- Slot breaks through a face: Recheck plunge depth, fence position, and stock thickness before making another cut.
- Biscuits feel swollen before use: Keep them sealed and dry; moisture can swell them in storage.
- Cutting safety: Wear eye and hearing protection, secure the stock, check blade condition, use dust extraction where possible, and follow the joiner’s manual.
Choosing a biscuit joint for the job
Use a biscuit joint when quick alignment during glue-up is a priority and the joint’s strength is appropriate for the project. For a more demanding structural connection, assess the required strength and consider a different joint, such as mortise-and-tenon. The right choice depends on the load, stock thickness, available tools, setup precision, and whether alignment is the main challenge.
