Open the vents, clear out old ash, light newspaper or starter cubes beneath a chimney filled with charcoal, then wait until the coals are coated in white ash. Wear protective barbecue mitts when pouring them onto the charcoal grate. Use a charcoal grill outdoors only: burning charcoal can produce deadly carbon monoxide.
How do I light a charcoal grill?
- Set up outdoors. Place the grill on a level, secure surface in a well-ventilated outdoor area. Never burn charcoal indoors or in an enclosed space. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that charcoal can produce carbon monoxide, which can kill.
- Prepare the grill. Open its vents, remove old ash, take off the cooking grate, and leave the charcoal grate in place. Check the owner’s guide for your grill model.
- Set up the chimney. Place the chimney starter on the charcoal grate—not on concrete. Put crumpled newspaper in its lower chamber, or position fire-starter cubes beneath it on the charcoal grate. Fill the upper chamber with the amount of charcoal you need. Weber advises against using self-lighting charcoal with this method.
- Light the starter. Light the newspaper or cubes through the chimney’s lower openings. Leave the chimney undisturbed while the charcoal catches.
- Wait for the readiness cue. When the coals are coated with white ash, put on two protective barbecue mitts and carefully pour them onto the charcoal grate. If you used starter cubes, make sure they have been completely consumed before cooking.
- Arrange the coals for the recipe. Spread them for direct heat or bank them to one side for indirect cooking, following your grill’s guide and the recipe. Set the hot chimney somewhere it cannot be bumped.
Weber’s chimney-starter instructions cover newspaper and starter cubes as ignition options. Follow the directions supplied with your particular grill and chimney if they differ.
How long does it take for charcoal to be ready?
Allow roughly 15–30 minutes, but treat time as an estimate rather than a guarantee. Weber gives two different estimates in separate instructions: 15–20 minutes for its briquettes in direct-heat instructions and 15–30 minutes in its charcoal owner guide. Charcoal type, amount, airflow, and conditions can affect how quickly it is ready.
Use the coals’ appearance—not the clock—as your main check: they should be coated with white ash. When you have used cubes, wait until they are fully consumed as well.

Can you light a charcoal grill without lighter fluid?
Yes. A chimney starter with newspaper or fire-starter cubes avoids the need to apply lighter fluid to the charcoal. Newspaper is a no-purchase option if you have suitable paper; cubes are a purpose-made alternative. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish that one works better in every condition.
Weber also describes lighting cubes placed within a charcoal pile as an alternative to a chimney. Use the method and amount of fuel directed by your grill’s owner guide. If you choose lighter fluid, follow its manufacturer’s instructions and never add it to a burning fire.
