Seat and latch the lid fully, place the box away from standing water, and inspect its edges, seams, and body for damage. If the interior is damp even after dry weather, remove wet items, air out the box, and keep its ventilation paths clear. A box designed to resist rain is not necessarily waterproof or suitable for submersion.
First work out where the moisture is coming from
The right fix depends on when the dampness appears. Water found after rain points toward the lid, a seam, a damaged panel, or the box’s position. Dampness that develops without rain is more consistent with moisture carried in by stored items and retained in a closed space. These are useful clues, not a definitive diagnosis: a particular box’s construction and condition matter.

- Water after a storm: Check that the lid was seated and latched, then look for water near the lid edge, corners, seams, or a visible crack.
- Dampness during dry weather: Check whether cushions, towels, wood, or other stored items were damp when put away, and whether the box’s ventilation openings are obstructed.
- Moisture on both occasions: There may be more than one contributing issue. Correct the closure and placement first, then dry the contents and interior before judging whether dampness returns.
These observations help narrow the problem; they do not establish a leak rate or prove that a particular design is defective.
If water appears after rain, check the closure and the box itself
- Move stored items somewhere dry. Empty the box so you can see where moisture collects and dry the contents separately. This also prevents a wet item from making a rain leak appear worse than it is.
- Check the placement. Make sure the box is not sitting in pooled or standing water. Setting it on a level, well-drained spot is general troubleshooting advice, not a model-specific manufacturer instruction. Do not assume a box can withstand water covering its base.
- Reseat the lid. Remove anything caught between the lid and rim, lower the lid evenly, and engage the latch or snaps as designed. Keter advises that its boxes’ lids be fully locked and snapped shut during storms. If the lid sits unevenly or will not latch, consult the manual for that model rather than forcing it.
- Inspect the likely entry points. Look along the lid edge, corners, seams, and body for cracks, warping, separated joints, or other visible damage. Pay attention to where the wet items were sitting, but do not treat that location alone as proof of the entry point.
- Dry the interior before checking again. A dry starting point makes it easier to tell whether moisture returns after ordinary exposure to rain. Keep the contents out until the interior is dry.
- Check the model’s instructions if the problem continues. A damaged panel, poor lid fit, or persistent leak may need a model-specific repair or replacement part. Confirm the part and repair method with the manufacturer before changing the box.
Keter says its deck boxes are designed to keep stored items dry during rain and snow, but are not intended to be submerged. That distinction matters: rain resistance does not promise protection when a box is partly underwater, and it does not override damage or an improperly closed lid.

If dampness develops without rain, address trapped moisture
Condensation is moisture that has moved into the air and then collected on a cooler surface. Damp contents can supply that moisture inside a closed box; temperature changes can contribute to where it collects. Seeing condensation does not, by itself, show that rain is getting through the lid. Manufacturer guidance does not establish a condensation rate or explain how every climate or box design will behave.
- Take everything out. Dry cushions, towels, and other contents fully before returning them. If an item feels dry on the surface but remains damp inside, leaving it in the box can reintroduce moisture.
- Air out the empty box. Leave the lid open in suitable dry conditions until the interior is dry. Do not store items while the inside is still damp.
- Use the built-in ventilation. Find the ventilation paths described in the product instructions and avoid blocking them with tightly packed contents. Do not assume every resin deck box has the same vents or airflow.
- Change what you store there if needed. Avoid closing away wet outdoor gear or freshly dampened items. Keter specifically cautions that a box intended to keep water out can trap wood’s natural moisture and may lead to mold; it recommends a dedicated ventilated structure for firewood.
- Watch for a pattern. If dampness returns when the box is empty and dry, inspect the lid and body as well as the ventilation. If it appears only after particular contents are stored, those items may be bringing moisture into the box.
Weather resistance and ventilation are not necessarily opposites. Keter says its outdoor storage boxes include built-in ventilation. A different NewAge teak product pairs a rain-sealing lid and rubber perimeter gaskets with a slatted floor intended to ventilate and dry internal moisture. That example illustrates a design approach; it does not establish that a resin box has the same construction or performance.
Do not modify the box before checking its instructions
Adding sealant, drilling holes, changing the lid, or blocking an opening can alter how a box handles water and airflow. Manufacturer guidance does not endorse those modifications as universal fixes for resin deck boxes. Before making a change, check the exact model’s manual and warranty or ask the manufacturer whether the repair is appropriate.

- Do not drill ventilation holes simply because the inside is damp; first determine whether the box already has ventilation and whether it is being obstructed.
- Do not apply a generic sealant on the assumption that it will fit the material, preserve the lid’s movement, or fix the actual entry point.
- Do not block existing vents to keep rain out; that can undermine airflow intended by the design.
- If a panel or lid is cracked or warped, ask about a model-compatible replacement part rather than assuming a generic seal or patch will work.
When replacing the box, compare claims carefully
Replacement may make sense if the box is damaged, the lid cannot close properly, or its design does not suit what you need to store. The product statements below are manufacturer descriptions, not results from a standardized independent leak or condensation test. They are not directly comparable performance ratings.

| Example | What the manufacturer states | What that does and does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Keter outdoor storage boxes | Designed to keep stored items dry during rain and snow; not intended for submersion. Keter also says its outdoor storage boxes include built-in ventilation. | Useful guidance on the stated use and ventilation feature; not a promise against every leak or condensation condition. |
| Rubbermaid model 2047052 | Double-wall construction that resists leaks and moisture. | A model-specific manufacturer claim, not an independent comparative test. |
| Suncast model BMDB1051DG | All-weather resin construction and water resistance. | “Water-resistant” should not be read as “waterproof.” |
When comparing other models, assess the lid’s seating and latching, the body and seam construction, whether ventilation is built in, and whether stored contents could obstruct it. Also check the intended use, capacity, care instructions, and the manufacturer’s exact wording about rain or water resistance. No standardized leakage or condensation measurements are established by the claims above, so they do not support ranking these products against one another.
How to prevent a repeat problem
- Close and latch the lid fully, particularly before storms.
- Keep the box out of standing water and in a location that drains rather than pools.
- Return only dry contents to a dry interior.
- Leave designed ventilation openings unobstructed.
- Use a ventilated storage structure for firewood rather than treating a rain-resistant box as a drying space.
- Check the lid fit and visible condition periodically, and follow the maintenance guidance for the exact model.
A simple troubleshooting routine
If you are unsure whether the problem is a leak or trapped moisture, change one condition at a time. Start by emptying and drying the box and its contents. Make sure the lid closes as intended, the box is not in pooled water, and any ventilation paths are clear. Then pay attention to when moisture returns: after rain, after storing particular items, or even when the empty box has been dry. This sequence does not replace a model-specific diagnosis, but it helps avoid treating every damp interior as a failed seal.
Keep the first inspection straightforward. Note whether the lid was fully latched, whether the box had been exposed to rain, and where moisture was visible. If you later contact the manufacturer, the model name or number and a clear description of the conditions will help you ask a specific question about the lid, panel, or compatible spare part. Do not assume that a replacement seal, lid, or other accessory from another model will fit.
What to consider before buying a replacement
A box that is marketed as weather resistant may still not suit every item or location. Match the box to its intended contents: a place to put away dry cushions is different from a ventilated structure for drying or storing naturally moist firewood. Check the capacity as well as the advertised weather language, since a larger capacity alone says nothing about moisture performance.

Look at the whole closure rather than relying on one feature name. Check whether the lid sits evenly and has a latch or snaps, what the manufacturer says about body and seam construction, and whether ventilation is built in. Think about whether the contents will block those openings when the box is full. Then read the care instructions and warranty for the exact model, especially if the intended location could expose the box to standing water or if you may need replacement parts later.
Product wording matters. Rubbermaid’s model 2047052 is described as having double-wall construction that resists leaks and moisture; Suncast describes model BMDB1051DG as all-weather resin with water resistance; Keter describes rain and snow use while warning against submersion and notes built-in ventilation for its outdoor storage boxes. Those are distinct claims about specific products and features, not a shared test scale. No figure in these descriptions establishes how much water a box can admit or how often condensation will form.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes that can make the problem harder to solve
- Calling every damp interior a leak. Wet contents can add moisture to a closed space. Dry the items and box before deciding that rain is entering.
- Calling every water-resistant box waterproof. Manufacturer wording may be limited to rain resistance or water resistance, and Keter explicitly says its boxes are not meant for submersion.
- Assuming all resin boxes have the same features. Ventilation, lid fit, construction, capacity, and care instructions vary by model. Check the exact product rather than relying on a general category label.
- Making an unverified repair. Sealant, drilling, or blocking vents may alter the intended balance of closure and airflow. Check instructions and warranty terms before changing the product.
- Buying an accessory without checking fit. Generic seals, lids, covers, and moisture absorbers are not confirmed as compatible or suitable for every outdoor box. Verify model compatibility and follow the product directions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is there condensation inside my resin deck box?
Damp items can release or retain moisture inside a closed box, and temperature changes can contribute to moisture collecting on cooler surfaces. Dry the contents and interior, then leave built-in ventilation paths unobstructed. Condensation alone does not prove rain is leaking through the lid.

Can I leave a resin deck box out in a storm?
Check the instructions for your exact model. Keter says its boxes are designed to keep stored items dry during rain and snow and advises fully locking and snapping the lid shut during storms, but its boxes are not intended for submersion. Those claims should not be applied automatically to other brands or models.
Should I drill holes in my deck box to stop condensation?
Not before checking the manual. Some outdoor storage boxes already have built-in ventilation, and the reviewed manufacturer guidance does not recommend drilling holes as a universal fix. Find existing vents, keep them clear, and ask the manufacturer before modifying the box.
Can I store firewood or damp cushions in a resin deck box?
Avoid putting damp cushions, towels, or other wet goods into a closed box. Keter warns that a box can trap the natural moisture in wood and recommends a dedicated ventilated structure for firewood.

Is water-resistant the same as waterproof?
No. Suncast describes model BMDB1051DG as water-resistant, while Keter says its boxes are not intended for submersion. Read the exact model’s wording and care instructions rather than assuming it can withstand standing or covering water.
Should I use sealant or buy a replacement seal?
Only if the exact model’s instructions or manufacturer support that repair. A generic seal or sealant may not fit the lid or address the actual source of water. Ask about model-compatible parts if the lid or body is damaged.
The Bottom Line
Start by separating rainwater from moisture brought in by stored items. Fully seat and latch the lid, keep the box out of standing water, inspect it for visible damage, and dry the interior and contents before checking whether dampness returns. Keep designed ventilation clear, and consult the exact model’s manual or manufacturer before modifying the box or buying repair parts.
