Site fencing, lighting, cameras, alarms, and patrols can add deterrence, but no single measure guarantees against theft.
Secure the container door
Keep the container locked after hours and whenever tools or materials are unattended. Victoria Police recommends heavy-duty padlocks or chains for equipment stored in containers. That guidance does not rank lock designs, brands, security grades, or resistance to attack, so treat the lock as one layer rather than a guarantee.

Before choosing a lock, check that it fits the door hasp and existing hardware, that the shackle clears the fittings without unnecessary exposure, and that the lock is suitable for the site’s weather. Decide whether keys or a combination are easier to control among the people who need access. A lock that does not fit the container’s locking arrangement is not a useful upgrade. Restrain equipment inside the container
A locked door protects the boundary; it does not stop someone who gets inside from removing equipment. South Australia Police recommends security-cabling larger items together, and Victoria Police advises securing equipment stored in containers with heavy-duty padlocks or chains. This is an additional obstacle, not a guarantee against theft.

Mark tools and keep an asset record
Make it easier to identify and report property if it goes missing. Mark tools with a driver’s licence number or another unique identifier appropriate to your location, and keep photographs plus model and serial numbers. South Australia Police also recommends marking raw building materials with colored spray paint and recording material movements to and from the site.

A useful inventory can include the brand, model, serial number, owner-applied mark, value, description, and photographs. A tool checkout record can show who took an item, when it left the container, and when it was returned. Prince William County Police Department recommends these inventory and checkout practices in its construction-site crime-prevention handout; its publication date is not stated in the accessible document excerpt.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsControl access and keys
Give access only to people who need it for their work. Recover keys from tradespeople who no longer need access, and consider construction keying if the container’s arrangement supports it. If using a combination lock, South Australia Police recommends changing the combination regularly. Keep the current key or combination available to authorized workers without leaving it where an intruder can readily find it.

Limit how much material is exposed
Where the schedule allows, arrange delivery close to installation instead of keeping a large stock on site. Avoid leaving quantities of raw material there across weekends or holidays, and delay installing appliances such as whitegoods or hot water systems until later in the project when feasible. South Australia Police identifies these items and raw materials as theft targets.
The U.S. Fire Administration also advises contractors: “Store solvents, fuels and tools in a locked storage container or remove them from the job site when you are not using them.” Its construction-site guidance was last reviewed on 1 April 2023. It recommends not storing excess materials at the site. U.S. Fire Administration construction-site guidance

Add site-level deterrents where practical
Fencing, good lighting, CCTV, audible alarms, guards or patrols, and community awareness are additional layers identified in official police and fire guidance. They protect the site more broadly than a container lock, and their usefulness depends on the site’s layout, power, connectivity, lighting, monitoring, and how temporary the setup needs to be.
Choose a camera for the job it needs to do: detect activity, observe what is happening, or identify people or vehicle number plates. Monitored CCTV may provide real-time information, but the cited guidance does not compare vendors or promise a particular outcome. South Australia Police sets out these camera purposes and site-security considerations in its construction-site theft guidance.
