How to Keep Chipmunks Out of Your Garden: Start With Barriers, Not Repellents

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most reliable way to keep chipmunks out of a garden is to physically block access. Cover vulnerable beds, bulbs, seeds, and seedlings with 1/4-inch hardware cloth, extend or bury the edges so chipmunks cannot dig underneath, and remove nearby food sources such as spilled birdseed and unsecured pet food. Use repellents only as supplemental protection. If activity persists or burrows are undermining a patio, retaining wall, stair, pool liner, or foundation, get local wildlife guidance before trapping or relocating the animals.

Chipmunks are usually a nuisance rather than a direct danger to people or pets, but they can damage newly planted beds and create maintenance problems around buildings. Their digging may disturb bulbs and seeds, uproot seedlings, and weaken soil around hardscape or foundations when burrows are concentrated in the wrong place.

First, confirm that chipmunks are causing the damage

Before installing barriers or setting traps, identify the animal. Chipmunks are small, striped, ground-dwelling rodents that commonly use burrows. Typical signs include:

  • Freshly dug soil around beds, borders, stairs, or foundations
  • Disturbed or missing flower bulbs and newly planted seeds
  • Nibbled seedlings, vegetables, or ornamental plants
  • Birdseed disappearing, especially when seed is scattered below a feeder
  • Small burrow entrances near rocks, woodpiles, retaining walls, patios, or other protected edges

These signs are not conclusive by themselves. Moles, voles, squirrels, rabbits, birds, and insects can produce similar garden damage but require different control methods. Correct identification should come before control work. [c002] [c003]

The best first-line defense: 1/4-inch hardware cloth

For most gardens, a physical barrier is more dependable than a scent, sound, or taste deterrent. Use galvanized or otherwise corrosion-resistant 1/4-inch hardware cloth to protect the planting zone. Quarter-inch welded mesh is small enough to stop chipmunks from reaching bulbs, seeds, and young plants while still allowing water and air through.

For a bed cover, lay the mesh over the soil after planting and cover it with a thin layer of soil or mulch. Leave enough room for stems to emerge, or cut small openings around established plants. Extend the mesh at least 1 foot beyond every edge of the planting area. This wider margin makes it harder for a chipmunk to dig just outside the protected zone and enter from the side. [c001] [c002]

A quarter-inch garden mesh roll is useful for several projects at once: removable covers for seedbeds, buried bulb protection, low perimeter skirts, and screening for suitable building openings. Choose the roll size based on the area to be protected rather than assuming a particular brand, length, or retailer listing will remain available.

How to install a chipmunk barrier

  1. Measure the vulnerable area. Include at least 12 inches beyond the bed on each side if the mesh will lie flat over the ground.
  2. Cut the mesh. Use wire cutters or aviation snips. Wear gloves and eye protection; cut wire ends can be extremely sharp.
  3. Flatten or fold the edges. Fold the perimeter down, bend sharp points away from walkways, or cover the edge with a board or suitable edging.
  4. Anchor it firmly. Use Landscape staples, fencing anchors, stakes, boards, or another durable fastening method. An unfastened edge is an invitation to dig underneath.
  5. Close ground-level gaps. The barrier should meet the soil, edging, wall, or other adjacent surface continuously. Pay particular attention to corners.
  6. Protect new plantings immediately. Recently planted bulbs and seeds are especially attractive. Interest may decline as plants mature, but the establishment period is when protection matters most. [c003]

When to bury the mesh

If chipmunks are digging under a fence, bed edge, shed, or other structure, form the hardware cloth into a low fence or perimeter skirt and bury the lower portion. General nuisance-wildlife guidance commonly recommends burying small-mesh hardware cloth about 6 to 12 inches for digging animals. The appropriate depth depends on the soil, bed construction, and severity of the activity; the practical goal is to remove the easy route underneath the edge. [c004]

For a shallow garden bed, a horizontal skirt can be effective: extend the mesh outward from the perimeter and bury it beneath soil or mulch. For a more persistent problem, combine that skirt with a vertical section around the bed. Inspect the perimeter after heavy rain or settling because even a small gap can defeat an otherwise sound installation.

Protect sheds, vents, crawlspaces, and foundations

Garden protection is only part of exclusion. If chipmunks are entering a shed, crawlspace, porch void, vent opening, siding gap, or foundation opening, repair the access point with 1/4-inch hardware cloth or a purpose-made wildlife-exclusion material. Do not seal an opening until you are confident no animal is inside.

Use extra care around dryer and exhaust vents. Those openings need screening that is appropriate for the appliance and does not create a fire or airflow hazard; use a professionally suitable vent product or consult a qualified contractor. Do not improvise a fine-mesh cover that can collect lint or obstruct exhaust. Building openings and structural exclusions are specifically identified as areas where quarter-inch mesh can help, but the installation must suit the opening and its function. [c001]

Remove the food and shelter that attract chipmunks

Barriers work better when the surrounding landscape does not continually draw chipmunks back to the same area. Reduce the available food and concealment around the garden and house:

  • Move bird feeders about 15 to 30 feet away from buildings. This does not eliminate chipmunks, but it separates feeding activity from foundations, walls, and entry points.
  • Choose feeders that reduce ground spillage. Sweep up spilled seed regularly rather than allowing a persistent food patch to form beneath the feeder.
  • Store grass seed, birdseed, and pet food in rodent-resistant containers. Do not leave pet food outdoors overnight.
  • Move firewood, lumber, debris, and dense ground cover away from foundations. These materials provide both food opportunities and concealed travel routes.
  • Prune or open dense vegetation beside the house. A less sheltered edge makes burrows easier to spot and reduces protected movement along the foundation.

Do not create a continuous covered route from a wooded area to the house with tightly packed debris, thick ground cover, or low structures. Habitat modification will not replace a barrier around a prized bed, but it can reduce pressure on that barrier. [c001] [c002]

Repellents can help, but they are backup protection

Some labeled wildlife repellents use active ingredients such as capsaicin, Bitrex, thiram, or ammonium soaps of higher fatty acids to make bulbs, seeds, foliage, or ornamental plantings less appealing. They may be useful when a physical barrier is impractical or as an additional layer around permitted ornamental plantings.

Repellents are not a permanent exclusion system. They commonly require repeated applications, weather reduces their effect, and they generally do not eliminate damage completely. A repellent product must specifically be labeled for chipmunks and for the location and plant being treated. EPA records show that at least some registered animal-repellent labels list chipmunks and use capsaicin, but that does not make every capsaicin product suitable for every garden. [c007]

Important rules for edible crops

Read the current product label before applying any pesticide or repellent. The label controls the permitted site, crop, application rate, timing, protective equipment, and harvest interval. A product approved for ornamental plants is not automatically approved for tomatoes, herbs, fruit, vegetables, or soil where food is grown. Pesticides may not be used at a food site unless the approved label allows that site and use. [c008]

For that reason, physical exclusion is usually the simpler and more predictable choice around edible crops. Do not use homemade pesticide mixtures or assume that a product marketed for squirrels or deer is legal or effective for chipmunks.

What not to rely on

  • Ultrasonic and scare devices: Wildlife-damage guidance does not consider frightening devices effective for chipmunks. [c001]
  • Mothballs: They are not a general-purpose garden repellent and can expose people, pets, and wildlife to inappropriate pesticide use.
  • Toxic baits: Do not place toxic bait around a garden as a routine chipmunk solution. Penn State guidance states that toxic baits and fumigants are not registered for controlling chipmunks in its guidance. [c002]
  • Burrow fumigants: They are hazardous around buildings and can harm non-target animals. They are not an appropriate DIY answer for ordinary garden damage. [c001]
  • Loose fencing: Any barrier with an open bottom edge, unprotected corner, or gap at a gate can simply redirect digging rather than stop it.

When trapping becomes reasonable

Consider trapping only after you have reduced food incentives and repaired exclusion gaps, or when persistent burrowing is creating a significant property problem. Trapping is not the best first step for a few disturbed bulbs because it creates additional responsibilities: selecting a suitable trap, preventing non-target captures, checking it frequently, and complying with local wildlife rules.

For live capture, wildlife-damage guidance describes fine-mesh cage traps with approximate minimum dimensions of 3 x 3 x 10 inches. Manufacturer guidance for small traps describes models in roughly the 10- to 20-inch length range. Place a correctly sized trap along a visible travel route, beside a structure, or near an active burrow—not randomly in the middle of a bed. [c001] [c009]

Possible baits include peanut butter, fruit, nut meats, or sunflower seeds. Put the bait toward the back so the animal must enter fully. Check a live trap at least every 24 hours, and more often when heat, cold, rain, or other weather could quickly compromise the animal’s welfare. [c001]

If a snap trap is used where legal and appropriate, it must be secured and shielded from children, pets, birds, and other wildlife. A purpose-built enclosure or tunnel should provide enough clearance for the trap to operate without exposing non-target animals. [c001] [c002]

Do not assume relocation is legal

There is no universal relocation rule for chipmunks. State and local laws may govern whether chipmunks can be trapped, transported, released elsewhere, or killed. Relocation can also cause animal-welfare and disease-management problems, and releasing an animal in another person’s property may simply transfer the nuisance.

Before setting a trap, contact your state wildlife agency or a licensed wildlife-control professional for the rules that apply where you live. Legal status varies by jurisdiction; for example, Penn State notes that Pennsylvania treats chipmunks as protected under state law even though they are not federally protected. That example should not be generalized to other states. [c002]

A practical chipmunk-exclusion sequence

  1. Identify the animal and damage. Look for striped chipmunks, fresh digging, disturbed bulbs, and related signs rather than assuming every hole is a chipmunk burrow.
  2. Protect the target immediately. Cover bulbs, seeds, seedlings, and vulnerable beds with 1/4-inch hardware cloth.
  3. Eliminate bypasses. Extend the mesh at least 1 foot beyond the planting margin, anchor it, and bury or skirt the perimeter where digging is occurring.
  4. Inspect nearby construction. Repair openings in sheds, crawlspaces, vents, siding, and foundations with suitable exclusion material. Treat dryer and exhaust vents as specialized installations.
  5. Reduce attractants. Move feeders 15–30 feet from buildings, clean up seed, secure pet food and grass seed, and remove shelter next to foundations.
  6. Add a labeled repellent only if needed. Follow the exact label, especially around edible plants, and expect repeated application rather than a guaranteed result.
  7. Escalate carefully. If burrows threaten structures or activity continues despite exclusion, consult local wildlife authorities or a licensed professional before trapping.

Materials checklist for a typical garden bed

  • 1/4-inch galvanized or corrosion-resistant hardware cloth
  • Wire cutters or aviation snips
  • Gloves and eye protection
  • Landscape staples, fencing anchors, stakes, or durable edging
  • Soil or mulch for covering a flat mesh barrier
  • A tape measure and marker for planning the 1-foot overlap

For a simple bed cover, the mesh and secure anchors are the critical items. Cutters and staples make installation easier, but accessories should support—not replace—the continuous small-mesh barrier.

When to call a professional

Get help when burrows are directly beside a foundation, under stairs, beneath a retaining wall, near a pool liner, or around another structure that could be undermined. Professional assistance is also sensible when you cannot determine whether an animal is inside an opening, when exclusion requires altering a vent or building component, or when trapping and relocation rules are unclear.

A licensed wildlife-control professional can assess entry points, identify the species, and recommend exclusion that does not trap an animal inside. Ask what licensing applies locally, how openings will be checked before sealing, and what the plan is for any animal already occupying the void.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size mesh keeps chipmunks out of a garden?

Use 1/4-inch hardware cloth. Cover vulnerable beds or planting areas, extend the mesh at least 1 foot beyond each edge, and anchor or bury the perimeter so chipmunks cannot dig underneath.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will coffee grounds, mothballs, or ultrasonic devices keep chipmunks away?

They should not be treated as dependable solutions. Mothballs and unregistered homemade pesticides can create safety and legal problems, while wildlife-damage guidance does not consider frightening devices effective for chipmunks. Physical exclusion and attractant reduction are more reliable.

Can I use a chipmunk repellent around vegetables?

Only if the specific product’s current label permits use on that crop or food-growing site. A repellent labeled for ornamental plants is not automatically approved for edible crops. Follow the label’s application and harvest instructions.

Is it legal to trap and relocate chipmunks?

Rules vary by state and locality. Check with your state wildlife agency or a licensed wildlife-control professional before trapping, transporting, or releasing a chipmunk. Do not assume that relocation is legal simply because the trap is sold commercially.

The Bottom Line

Build the solution from the outside in: use 1/4-inch hardware cloth to block the garden, bury or extend its edges to stop digging, remove spilled seed and other attractants, and reserve labeled repellents and trapping for persistent cases. If burrows threaten a structure, treat the problem as a wildlife-exclusion and property-maintenance issue—not just a garden nuisance.
