Calathea Care Indoors: How to Keep Prayer Plants Healthy and Beautiful

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calatheas grow best when their conditions stay steady: bright filtered light, warm temperatures, evenly moist but well-drained soil, and moderately high humidity. They are not usually difficult because of one mysterious requirement; they are less forgiving when several conditions fluctuate at once.

The name Calathea is still common in garden centers, although some plants are now classified or sold as Goeppertia, Ctenanthe, or Stromanthe. This guide uses “Calathea” in the familiar retail sense and covers popular foliage plants such as peacock plant, rattlesnake plant, and orbifolia.

Calathea care at a glance

Requirement What to provide What to avoid
Light Bright, indirect light or filtered shade Harsh direct sun, especially through hot summer glass
Water Keep the mix evenly moist; water thoroughly when the surface has begun to dry Bone-dry soil or permanently saturated roots
Humidity Roughly 50–60% or higher when practical Assuming occasional misting will permanently correct dry air
Temperature Warm, stable indoor conditions; approximately 16–21°C (61–70°F) is a useful general range Cold drafts, sudden changes, radiators, heating vents, and air-conditioning outlets
Soil Moisture-retentive but well-drained houseplant mix Dense, airless soil or a pot without drainage holes
Fertilizer Diluted balanced houseplant fertilizer during active growth Heavy feeding in winter or feeding a stressed plant

These conditions work together. For example, a plant in dry air may need more frequent watering, while a plant in low light may use water slowly and remain wet for too long. Diagnose the whole setup rather than changing one variable automatically.

Choose the right indoor location

Light: bright and filtered is safer than intense sun

Place a Calathea near an east- or north-facing window, or set it a short distance behind a sheer curtain. A bright room with filtered light is generally better than an unobstructed south- or west-facing window.

Direct summer sun can scorch leaves and fade the markings that make these plants attractive. If you see bleached, faded, or crisp patches concentrated on the window-facing side, excessive light is a reasonable possibility. That is a practical clue, not a conclusive diagnosis: dry soil, pests, and root damage can create overlapping symptoms.

Too little light produces a different pattern. Growth may become slow, and new foliage may be unusually sparse or stretched. If the plant is healthy but the room is dim, an indoor grow light for houseplants can help. Use it as supplemental light, position it according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and make sure it does not heat or scorch the leaves.

Keep temperatures stable

Calatheas are tropical perennials and generally perform better indoors than on an exposed patio. Keep the plant comfortably warm and away from frequently opened cold windows, exterior doors, radiators, fireplaces, heating vents, and air-conditioning outlets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Royal Horticultural Society gives approximately 16–21°C (61–70°F) for general Calathea care. Commercial growing operations may use warmer, tightly controlled conditions, but home growers do not need to reproduce a greenhouse. The practical priority is avoiding cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.

Watering: evenly moist, never waterlogged

During active growth, keep the potting mix evenly moist without leaving it saturated. Check the upper few centimeters of soil with a finger or moisture meter. When that area has begun to dry, water slowly and thoroughly until some water runs from the drainage holes.

  1. Check the mix before watering; do not rely on a calendar alone.
  2. Water the entire root ball rather than wetting only one side of the pot.
  3. Allow excess water to drain completely.
  4. Empty the saucer or decorative cachepot so the pot does not stand in water.

In autumn and winter, Calatheas often grow more slowly and indoor evaporation may decrease. Water less frequently as needed, but do not allow the root ball to become completely dry for long periods. The correct interval depends on pot size, soil, light, temperature, humidity, and root health.

Water quality and brown tips

Water quality becomes worth investigating when brown tips or mineral spots repeatedly appear despite appropriate light, watering, and humidity. The Royal Horticultural Society notes that Calatheas can react to lime, chlorine, or fluoride in mains water. Rainwater, filtered water, or distilled water may be useful options; the University of Minnesota Extension also recommends filtered or distilled water to reduce mineral spotting.

That does not make distilled water a universal cure. Brown edges can also result from low humidity, inconsistent watering, salt buildup, direct sun, pests, or damaged roots. Change one or two likely factors at a time so you can tell what actually helped. If fertilizer salts may have accumulated, flush the pot thoroughly with clean water and let it drain fully.

A narrow-spout watering can and a clean container for filtered or distilled water can make controlled watering easier, particularly for plants in decorative cachepots.

Humidity: measure before you chase a number

Calatheas usually appreciate humid air. A practical household target is approximately 50–60% relative humidity or higher when possible, rather than one exact percentage that guarantees success. The RHS gives 60% or higher as a useful target for Calathea ‘Medallion’, while commercial production guidance covers a much broader controlled range.

A separate reservoir completely separates the plant growth environment from the water storage environment.

A digital hygrometer for houseplants is more useful than guessing. Put it near the plant, away from a humidifier’s direct output, and observe the room over several days. If the air is consistently dry, a properly sized plant humidifier is more reliable than occasional misting. Clean the humidifier as directed and avoid making surfaces, walls, or the potting mix persistently wet.

Grouping plants can modestly improve the immediate microclimate. A pebble or gravel tray may also provide a small local effect, but the pot must sit above the water level—not in standing water. Misting temporarily wets the foliage; it does not permanently raise room humidity and should not be treated as a cure for dry air.

Use a moisture-retentive, well-drained soil mix

Calathea roots need access to moisture and air at the same time. Use a quality peat-free or general houseplant mix that holds moisture but drains freely. A home blend can be improved with materials such as perlite, pine bark, or horticultural bark to create air space.

The Missouri Botanical Garden describes successful indoor growth in uniformly moist, well-drained, peaty media. Commercial production guidance uses soilless combinations including peat, pine bark, vermiculite, and perlite, with a mildly acidic pH around 6.0. You do not need to duplicate a commercial formula exactly; the key is balancing water retention with drainage.

When correcting poor soil, a well-draining potting mix combined with an appropriately sized houseplant pot with drainage holes is more useful than adding a thick layer of rocks to the bottom of a container. A drainage hole is essential.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Potting and repotting

Do not automatically repot a newly purchased Calathea. It can often remain in its nursery pot through the first growing season unless the mix drains badly, roots are severely crowded, the plant is unstable, or the container has no usable drainage.

Repot every few years or when the clump has filled its container. Spring or summer is usually the least stressful time. Choose a container only one or two sizes larger than the current root ball. An oversized pot holds a large volume of unused wet soil around the roots, increasing the chance of root problems.

  1. Water the plant lightly if the root ball is extremely dry, then remove it carefully.
  2. Inspect the roots and loosen only the outermost compacted mix.
  3. Trim soft, decayed roots with clean tools.
  4. Place the plant at the same general depth in fresh, well-drained mix.
  5. Water to settle the soil and let all excess drain.
  6. Return it to bright indirect light and avoid heavy fertilizer while it recovers.

Yellow leaves after repotting do not automatically mean the plant needs more water or fertilizer. Root disturbance, excess moisture, and adjustment stress can all contribute.

Fertilizing Calathea

Feed during active growth, generally around April through September, using a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted according to its label. The RHS recommends monthly feeding during this period and avoiding routine feeding in autumn and winter.

Do not fertilize a plant that is drought-stressed, recently repotted, diseased, or suffering from obvious root damage. Commercial production nutrient schedules are designed for controlled growing conditions and should not be copied directly as a household routine.

If the soil surface has a white or crusty buildup, or the plant develops symptoms after repeated feeding, salts may have accumulated. Flush the mix thoroughly with clean water, allow it to drain, and pause fertilizer until the plant is stable.

Propagate Calathea by division

Division is the most dependable home-propagation method. Iowa State University Extension identifies Calathea makoyana and C. ornata as plants propagated by division. The University of Florida IFAS also describes propagation by dividing the rhizome, with each section retaining at least one leaf.

Divide a healthy, actively growing plant rather than one already weakened by pests, disease, or root loss.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Prepare clean pots with drainage holes and appropriately moist, well-drained mix.
  2. Remove the plant and gently loosen the root ball.
  3. Look for natural clumps or sections connected by rhizomes.
  4. Separate them by hand where possible. Use a clean knife only when necessary.
  5. Ensure every division has viable roots and foliage; a section with at least one leaf is the safer minimum.
  6. Pot each division promptly at an appropriate depth.
  7. Water to settle the mix and place the divisions in bright indirect light.
  8. Wait several weeks before fertilizing while new roots establish.

Leaf cuttings are not a reliable substitute for division because a leaf without the necessary growing tissue will not necessarily produce a new Calathea.

Troubleshoot the most common problems

Brown or crispy leaf edges

Check, in this order:

  • Whether the plant is repeatedly drying too far between waterings.
  • Whether humidity is persistently low.
  • Whether direct sun is striking the foliage.
  • Whether the water contains minerals that are accumulating in the mix.
  • Whether fertilizer salts are present.
  • Whether roots are damaged by either drought or prolonged saturation.

Trim only the damaged portions for appearance; trimming will not reverse existing damage. Correct the underlying conditions and watch new growth.

Curled or drooping leaves

First check the soil. A dry root ball can cause curling and drooping, but so can cold drafts, low humidity, or root injury from excess water. Do not automatically water a drooping plant without checking the mix. Repeatedly adding water to already saturated soil can worsen root damage.

Yellow leaves

Possible contributors include excessive moisture, poor drainage, low light, root stress, and naturally aging foliage. Remove clearly dead leaves, inspect the pot and roots if the problem is widespread, and do not respond by adding fertilizer before identifying the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pests

Common Calathea pests include fungus gnats, aphids, mealybugs, and mites. Inspect leaf undersides, petioles, leaf joints, and the soil surface whenever symptoms appear. Isolate an affected plant from others, remove heavily damaged foliage when appropriate, and use a treatment labeled for indoor plants and the specific pest.

Root or rhizome problems

Persistent wet soil, a foul smell, collapsing stems, and widespread yellowing can indicate root or rhizome trouble. Remove the plant, inspect the root system, and cut away soft or decayed tissue with sterile tools. Repot in fresh, appropriately sized mix only if enough healthy tissue remains. This can give the plant a chance to recover but is not a guarantee.

Are Calatheas safe around pets?

The ASPCA lists Calathea species as non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses. “Non-toxic” does not mean that eating the plant is harmless: ASPCA notes that consuming plant material can still cause vomiting or gastrointestinal upset. Pets may also be exposed to fertilizer, pesticide, or contaminated potting products, so keep those materials out of reach.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I water a Calathea?

Check the top few centimeters of soil rather than following a fixed schedule. When that area has begun to dry, water thoroughly until excess drains from the bottom, then empty the saucer. Water less frequently in cooler, darker months, but do not let the root ball become bone-dry.

Why are my Calathea’s leaf tips turning brown?

Low humidity, inconsistent watering, mineral-heavy water, fertilizer salts, direct sun, pests, and root stress can all contribute. Check the soil and environment before switching to distilled water or changing several conditions at once.

Does Calathea need distilled water?

No. Distilled, filtered, or rainwater can help when repeated mineral spotting or brown tips suggest a reaction to tap-water minerals, but distilled water is not mandatory for every home or a guaranteed solution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Calathea grow in low light?

It may tolerate lower light, but growth is usually better in bright indirect or filtered light. Very low light can cause slow, sparse, or stretched growth, while direct sun can scorch and fade the leaves.

Can I propagate Calathea from a leaf cutting?

Division is the more defensible home method. Separate natural clumps so each section retains roots and foliage; a leaf without the necessary growing tissue will not reliably produce a new plant.

The Bottom Line

Successful Calathea care is mainly an exercise in consistency: filtered light, warm and draft-free placement, evenly moist but aerated soil, sensible humidity, and careful observation. Fix the growing conditions before reaching for fertilizer, more water, or a single-purpose remedy.
