Seal the home before late summer and fall. Repair screens, caulk suitable cracks, close utility penetrations, install door and garage seals, and keep debris away from the foundation. If boxelder bugs are already indoors, vacuum them rather than spraying wall voids or using a fogger.
The most reliable way to keep boxelder bugs out is to seal the home before late summer and early fall, when adults gather on warm exterior walls and look for protected places to overwinter. Repair screens, close cracks around windows and doors, seal utility penetrations, add door and garage-door seals, and keep debris away from the foundation. If bugs are already indoors, vacuum them rather than spraying wall voids or using a fogger.

Boxelder bugs are primarily nuisance insects. They do not normally damage the structure, reproduce inside the house, or pose a typical danger to people, pets, or household contents. They can stain light-colored surfaces and release an unpleasant odor when crushed, however, so prevention and careful removal are worthwhile.

The common boxelder bug (Boisea trivittata) and western boxelder bug (Boisea rubrolineata) are dark gray or black adults with red or orange markings. Nymphs are smaller, wingless, and often mostly red.

They are strongly associated with female, seed-producing boxelder trees, but may also use maple, ash, and some fruiting plants. In late summer and fall, adults congregate on sunny walls—especially south- and west-facing walls—before moving into cracks, wall spaces, attics, foundations, window areas, garages, and other sheltered locations.
The insects seen indoors during winter or spring usually entered the building months earlier. They can become active when sunlight or indoor heat raises the temperature. They do not establish a breeding population inside the home, so indoor sightings do not necessarily mean the insects are reproducing in the walls.
The pre-fall exclusion checklist
Walk around the entire building before the end of August if possible. Exclusion works best before adults begin clustering and searching for overwintering sites.

- Check window and door frames. Look for separated joints, deteriorated caulk, and gaps between the frame and siding or masonry.
- Seal siding and trim joints. Inspect corners, fascia, soffits, roof lines, and transitions between different exterior materials.
- Close utility penetrations. Check the places where cables, pipes, conduit, outdoor faucets, and other services pass through the wall.
- Inspect vents. Examine dryer vents, bathroom exhaust fans, soffit vents, roof vents, and other openings. Keep required airflow paths open while ensuring that the opening has an appropriate screen or purpose-made cover.
- Improve exterior-door seals. Install or replace door sweeps and thresholds where daylight or drafts are visible beneath a door.
- Seal the garage. Check the bottom of the garage door and the side and top weatherstripping. A resilient door sweep or garage-door bottom seal may close the gap that insects use to enter.
For flexible joints and ordinary cracks, suitable materials may include exterior silicone, silicone-acrylic, elastomeric-latex, or another caulk appropriate for the surface. For larger openings, the right repair may involve polyurethane expanding foam, copper mesh, backer material, or a combination of materials. A home exclusion supplies checklist can help gather caulk, mesh, replacement weatherstripping, and other repair materials before the inspection.
Do not fill every opening indiscriminately. Masonry veneer and brick walls may have weep holes that allow drainage and ventilation. Keep these openings open; if insect entry is a concern, use purpose-made weep-hole or ventilation plugs rather than caulking them shut. Openings around 1/8 inch or larger can be meaningful entry points, but sealing them reduces opportunities rather than guaranteeing that every bug will be excluded.
Reduce the shelter around the foundation
Exclusion is the priority, but nearby conditions can make a home less attractive to congregating insects:
- Remove leaf litter, boards, rocks, weeds, grass clippings, and other debris immediately beside the foundation.
- Keep fallen boxelder seeds swept from patios, driveways, porches, and other hard surfaces.
- Maintain a relatively clear strip of about 6 to 10 feet around the foundation where site conditions allow.
- Trim vegetation that creates concealed contact with walls, while preserving healthy plantings where practical.
These steps reduce hiding places and nearby congregation, but they will not create a guaranteed barrier. Adult boxelder bugs can travel from trees on neighboring properties.

Should you remove a boxelder tree?
Female boxelder trees produce the seed pods most often associated with large boxelder bug populations. Removing a nearby seed-bearing tree can provide a lasting improvement in some locations, but it is not a universal solution. Bugs may migrate from other boxelder, maple, ash, or fruiting trees, and tree removal may be unnecessary, impractical, or undesirable.
Do not remove a healthy tree solely because a few bugs appear on the house. Consider tree removal only after identifying the tree, confirming that it is contributing to a recurring problem, and weighing shade, habitat, property value, and replacement costs. If the tree’s condition or identity is uncertain, an arborist inspection is more appropriate than immediate removal.
What to do when boxelder bugs are already inside
Vacuuming is usually the best practical response. Use a household vacuum or a shop vacuum for indoor bug removal to collect insects from windows, walls, ceilings, attics, garages, and living areas. A broom and dustpan work for accessible surfaces.
- Remove the bugs gently instead of crushing them against curtains, upholstery, painted walls, or light-colored fabrics.
- Empty the vacuum canister or dispose of the bag promptly according to the vacuum manufacturer’s instructions.
- Inspect the nearby window, trim, baseboard, or wall penetration for the route the insects used.
- Make the permanent repair when weather permits, even if the immediate indoor activity subsides.
Vacuuming may need to be repeated. Adults that entered during the previous fall can emerge intermittently as indoor temperatures change. This does not necessarily mean that the insects are breeding indoors.

Spraying exposed insects may kill some of them, but it does not close the entry route. Insects hidden in wall voids, attics, or other protected spaces may continue to emerge, and treating those spaces does not prevent additional bugs from appearing later.
Indoor insecticide use is therefore generally unnecessary for this nuisance problem and can create avoidable exposure, residue, odor, and cleanup concerns. Foggers are especially poor substitutes for sealing: they may affect exposed insects without solving the building defect that allowed entry.

Nonchemical removal outdoors
If bugs are clustering on an exterior wall or tree trunk, a forceful stream of water can wash them away. Boxelder bugs are susceptible to drowning, and hosing avoids applying a pesticide to the building. This is temporary, so combine it with exclusion and cleanup rather than treating it as a permanent control method.
Some extension guidance also discusses direct-contact detergent solutions. These can work only when the spray actually contacts the insects; they are not residual barriers. Detergent mixtures may injure plants or damage certain finishes. If you use one, test a small inconspicuous area first, follow the product directions, and prevent runoff into storm drains, ponds, streams, or other waterways.

When an exterior pesticide may be justified
An exterior treatment can be considered when the infestation is unusually large, recurs despite careful exclusion, or affects a building with many difficult-to-seal entry points. Extension recommendations differ in emphasis: some guidance generally discourages routine spraying because hosing or vacuuming may work as well and pesticide applications may need to be repeated; other guidance allows a properly timed exterior treatment for homes with a serious history of invasions.
The practical distinction is important: pesticide is an optional supplement, not the foundation of boxelder bug control. First seal the building and reduce nearby shelter.
Read the current label before buying or applying anything
Use only a product whose current label permits the specific pest, building, surface, location, and application method. The pesticide label is legally controlling. Product registrations and directions can differ by formulation and by state.

Some registered products that list boxelder bugs restrict use to outdoor exterior vertical surfaces or direct spot and crack-and-crevice applications. A particular label may prohibit indoor use, horizontal-surface applications, broad perimeter treatments, runoff, or contact with people and pets. Those restrictions cannot be generalized from one product to another.
Active ingredients mentioned in some consumer-product guidance include bifenthrin, cyfluthrin, deltamethrin, lambda-cyhalothrin, and permethrin. These are not blanket recommendations. The formulation, registration, treated site, geography, and complete label directions determine whether a particular product is lawful and suitable. Never invent a dilution or application rate, and never apply an outdoor product indoors unless its label specifically allows that use.
Keep children, pets, food, toys, storm drains, and untreated surfaces away from the application area as required by the label. Do not allow spray or rinse water to run into drains or waterways.

Contact a licensed pest-management professional when:
- large numbers return every year despite repairs;
- bugs are entering through inaccessible wall, roof, or foundation spaces;
- the building has extensive siding, masonry, attic, or crawl-space openings;
- you are unsure whether the insect is actually a boxelder bug;
- you need an exterior treatment but cannot interpret the product label safely; or
- the infestation is severe enough that repeated vacuuming and exclusion are impractical.
Ask the professional to identify the insect, locate likely entry points, explain which repairs are recommended, and distinguish exclusion from any optional exterior treatment. A licensed pest-control professional should not promise that one spray will permanently eradicate insects that can migrate from surrounding trees.

A simple seasonal plan
| Timing | Priority |
|---|---|
| Late spring and summer | Identify recurring congregation areas, inspect screens and seals, and plan repairs. |
| Before the end of August | Complete caulking, screen repairs, vent protection, door sweeps, garage seals, and other exclusion work. |
| Late summer through fall | Watch sunny south- and west-facing walls, remove nearby debris and fallen seeds, and address gaps immediately. |
| Winter and spring | Vacuum indoor adults as they emerge. Use the sightings to locate repairs; do not assume they are reproducing inside. |
For most homes, the durable solution is straightforward building maintenance: close the gaps before fall, preserve necessary drainage and ventilation, keep the foundation edge clear, and vacuum the stragglers that emerge indoors. That approach addresses the reason boxelder bugs are present without treating a nuisance insect as a structural emergency.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do boxelder bugs breed inside the house?
No. Boxelder bugs do not normally reproduce inside homes. Adults typically enter during late summer or fall to overwinter in protected spaces, then emerge when indoor temperatures warm.
What is the best way to get boxelder bugs out of the house?
Vacuum them up, dispose of the contents promptly, and avoid crushing them on light-colored fabrics or surfaces. Then inspect nearby windows, trim, vents, and wall penetrations for an entry point.
When should I seal my house against boxelder bugs?
Complete exclusion repairs before late summer, ideally before the end of August. This is before adults typically cluster on warm walls and seek overwintering sites.
Will removing a boxelder tree solve the problem?
Not usually. Removing a nearby female, seed-producing boxelder tree may help in some locations, but bugs can travel from neighboring trees and tree removal may be unnecessary or undesirable.
Can I spray insecticide for boxelder bugs?
Only if the current product label specifically permits treatment of boxelder bugs on that structure, surface, and location. Some products restrict use to outdoor vertical surfaces and prohibit indoor, horizontal-surface, perimeter, or runoff applications.
The Bottom Line
Seal first, spray last. Finish screen, caulk, vent, door, garage, and utility-penetration repairs before late summer; keep debris away from the foundation; and vacuum indoor bugs rather than treating wall voids. Use an exterior pesticide only when the current label allows the exact application, or hire a licensed professional for severe recurring infestations.
