Keep a bulldozer out of trouble in soft ground by checking the route before entry, managing water, choosing a compatible low-ground-pressure (LGP) track configuration, using a light and controlled dozing pattern, and arranging recovery before the machine commits to weak soil. Wider shoes can improve flotation, but no track setup guarantees support when the ground cannot carry the machine. The correct decision depends on the dozer’s weight, configuration, load, soil and the route’s condition.
Why dozers bog down in soft ground
A dozer gets stuck when the ground cannot provide enough support for the machine and its load. Tracks then sink, the undercarriage loses a firm reaction surface, and engine power is converted into spinning rather than forward motion. A machine may travel across one part of a site and bog down a few metres away because soil strength, water content and fill depth change across the route.

Soft conditions can appear after rain, thaw, flooding, excavation or work that has disturbed the surface. Standing water is an obvious warning, but apparently dry crust can conceal saturated material below. The safe question is not whether another machine crossed yesterday; it is whether this machine, in its current configuration and with its planned load, has adequate support along the entire route.

Inspect the route before the dozer enters
Walk the working area and travel path
Inspect the complete route, not just the first few metres. Look for standing or flowing water, wheel ruts, soft shoulders, recently placed fill, visible pumping under foot traffic, cracks, deep organic soil and places where the surface changes from firm to saturated. Mark hazards and identify a route with continuous support rather than a series of isolated firm spots.
Repeat the check after heavy rain, rapid snowmelt or a freeze–thaw cycle. A route that was acceptable at the start of a shift may weaken as water enters the soil or as repeated passes shear the surface. Reassess when the blade load, attachment or operating area changes.
Manage surface water without overpromising
Where practical, remove or divert surface water and keep runoff from entering the work path. The Japan Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s training material lists drainage among the considerations for bulldozer work on soft ground. Drainage can improve a route, but it does not automatically make saturated soil safe; the underlying material may remain too weak to support the machine.

Plan where the dozer will turn, reverse and leave the area. A short firm section surrounded by mud is not a useful route if the machine cannot reach it without crossing unsupported ground. Keep access open for a recovery vehicle and avoid creating a dead-end cut that leaves no practical retreat.
Understand ground pressure and flotation
Use ground pressure as a comparison, not a pass/fail test
Effective ground pressure is commonly expressed as machine weight divided by the total area of track in contact with the ground. More contact area generally lowers pressure and can reduce sinking. The FAO forest-road manual gives a historical example of 0.7 bar (10.2 lb/in²) for a 149 kW, 23-tonne bulldozer. That figure illustrates the calculation in a road-engineering context; it is not a safe-work threshold, a soil-bearing limit or a specification for current dozers.

Actual pressure changes with operating weight, track design, shoe width, track adjustment, carried material and how much of each track is supported. A blade full of dense material increases the load while the dozer is already trying to climb or push. Treat any pressure estimate as one input to a site-specific assessment, not permission to enter.
Choose track shoes for the application
Wider track shoes increase the footprint and are used on low-ground-pressure (LGP) tractors to improve flotation in mud and other soft materials. They can be the better choice when the machine is approved for that configuration and the work requires more contact area. Standard shoes may be preferable where the ground is firmer, steering precision or wear resistance is more important, or the machine manufacturer does not approve the wider setup.

| Standard track shoes | Suitable for the machine’s normal configuration and many firm-ground applications. | Higher pressure than a wider shoe arrangement may increase sinking in weak material; verify the application in the manual. |
| Wider or LGP shoes | More contact area can improve flotation in mud and soft material. | Confirm compatibility, correct track adjustment, steering behavior, clearance and the manufacturer’s limits. Wider shoes do not overcome ground that lacks adequate bearing capacity. |
Do not select shoe width by appearance or by a generic “widest is best” rule. The Navy’s wet-material training guidance identifies wider shoes as a flotation aid, while the FAO example demonstrates why contact area matters; neither establishes a universal shoe width for every dozer or site.
Set up the job to preserve support
Build a route rather than repeatedly damaging one
Use the firmest practical line and keep traffic organized. The MHLW guidance identifies minimizing steering and using the same route as soft-ground operating practices. In practical terms, reduce unnecessary crabbing and turning, keep passes aligned with the site plan, and avoid widening a damaged path through random movement. These are planning principles, not a replacement for the machine’s procedure or the site’s traffic controls.
Use successive full-depth passes when the method calls for them
U.S. Navy training guidance for wet material describes full-depth successive passes. Follow that method only when it matches the task, dozer and approved work plan. Do not assume that a shallow skim, repeated spinning or an improvised ramp will provide support. If the planned cut exposes weaker material, stop and reassess the route and recovery plan.

Keep the blade and load under control
Before entry, decide how much material can be moved without forcing the machine into a high-resistance push. Leave room to reduce the blade load if the dozer starts to sink. A clean, controlled pass is preferable to building a large windrow that requires a sudden, overloaded push later.

Prevent blade overload
Caterpillar’s dozer operating guidance warns that overloading the blade wastes power and fuel and can cause track slip. Take shorter cuts or use slot dozing to limit the amount of material carried in front of the blade. Slot dozing uses adjacent material and a defined path to keep the load controlled rather than asking the machine to push a large, spreading pile across weak ground.
Recognize slip, lugging and stall conditions
- Track slip: the tracks rotate but the dozer makes little progress. Continuing to increase throttle usually excavates the soil beneath the tracks and makes recovery harder.
- Lugging: engine speed falls under excessive load. Reduce the cut or blade load and use the operating range specified for the machine.
- Stalling: the machine loses momentum and stops under load. Stop before the tracks bury themselves, lower the load safely and reassess.
When slip begins, do not repeatedly spin the tracks to “power through.” Ease the load, straighten the machine where safe, and retreat along the supported route if the work plan allows. Follow the specific machine manual for gear selection, implement control and any traction-control functions.
Make turns deliberate
Steering consumes support because one track slows or pivots while the ground is already weak. Limit steering in soft sections, make broad controlled changes of direction where the site plan permits, and avoid counter-rotating the tracks unless the manufacturer’s procedure and ground conditions support it. Never let a general soft-ground tip override a required exclusion zone, edge-distance rule or traffic plan.
When to stop before the dozer is stuck
Stop work and reassess if the machine begins to sink noticeably, leaves deepening ruts, loses forward speed despite a reduced load, shows persistent track slip, or approaches a water-filled depression or unsupported edge. Continuing can turn a recoverable situation into an undercarriage extraction, environmental incident or rollover exposure.

Move only on a route known to provide support. If retreat is not possible without further damage, secure the machine as the manual and site plan require, keep people clear of the dozer and begin the planned recovery process. Do not send another machine onto the same weak ground without confirming that its weight, configuration and recovery role are suitable.
Plan recovery before entry
Confirm attachment points and ratings
The Navy training material says to arrange rescue before working in wet material, warns that the blade is designed for pushing rather than pulling, and describes a front towing hook beneath the dozer or a rear drawbar as attachment points in that training context. Those details must not be generalized to every bulldozer. Before work starts, identify the specific machine’s rated recovery points, permitted direction of pull, approved hardware, line or winch requirements and exclusion zone.
Never attach a recovery line to the blade, blade lift components, ripper, tie-down point or an unverified structural member. Use only points and procedures approved for the exact model. A recovery plan should name the competent person directing the operation, the equipment that will provide assistance, communication signals, a safe line-of-fire area and the conditions that require a specialist recovery contractor.
Make the recovery route usable
Park assistance on firm ground with a clear approach and enough room to align the pull. Keep workers out of bights and potential snap-back zones, and do not stand between the dozer and the recovery machine. If water, steep ground, buried debris or unstable banks are involved, stop and obtain a task-specific plan rather than improvising a stronger pull.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMaintain the undercarriage for mobility
Check and clean tracks
Caterpillar recommends daily undercarriage cleaning and inspection. Remove packed mud and debris that can hide damage, obstruct rollers or alter the effective track condition. Inspect shoes, bolts, rollers, idlers, sprockets, guards and the track chain for abnormal wear or damage before entering soft ground.

Set track tension from the machine manual
Incorrect track tension can accelerate wear and may contribute to track loss. Caterpillar’s track-tension guidance directs operators to the machine’s own operation and maintenance manual for the correct tension dimensions. Do not apply a generic measurement from another model: the required dimension, measurement method and adjustment procedure are machine-specific.
Undercarriage maintenance supports mobility and reduces downtime, but a well-maintained track cannot make inadequate soil safe. Pair the inspection with the route assessment and the recovery plan.
A practical pre-entry checklist
- Has the full travel, work, turn and exit route been inspected after the latest rain, thaw or water change?
- Are standing water, saturated pockets, soft shoulders and buried hazards identified and marked?
- Can surface water be diverted without assuming drainage alone solves the bearing problem?
- Does the selected dozer and track configuration match the soil, load and application?
- Are track shoes, chains, rollers, idlers, sprockets and guards in serviceable condition?
- Has track tension been checked using the exact machine manual?
- Is the planned cut small enough to avoid blade overload, lugging and track slip?
- Is the route organized to minimize unnecessary steering and repeated damage?
- Can the dozer retreat, and can recovery equipment reach it from firm ground?
- Are rated recovery points, equipment, signals, exclusion zones and responsible personnel confirmed?
Common mistakes and safer alternatives
| Mistake | Why it worsens the situation | Safer alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Entering because another machine crossed earlier | Different weight, track area, load or timing can produce a different ground response. | Assess the route for this dozer and current conditions. |
| Choosing the widest shoes without checking compatibility | Flotation is only one factor; the machine, steering, wear and application still govern suitability. | Use an approved configuration matched to the job. |
| Filling the blade and pushing until the tracks spin | Overload and slip remove support and excavate the route. | Use shorter cuts or slot dozing and reduce the load at the first sign of slip. |
| Pulling from the blade | The blade is designed for pushing, not recovery pulling, and may be damaged or detached. | Use the model’s rated hook or drawbar and approved recovery method. |
| Relying on a generic track-tension figure | Dimensions and measurement methods vary by model. | Use the exact operation and maintenance manual. |
| Spinning tracks to escape | It deepens ruts, heats and wears components, and can bury the machine. | Stop, lower the load safely, retreat if possible and activate the recovery plan. |
What the evidence does—and does not—support
The available institutional and manufacturer guidance supports a layered approach: inspect and manage water, choose suitable flotation, organize passes, avoid overload and slip, maintain the undercarriage and arrange recovery. It does not establish a universal soil-bearing threshold, maximum slope, maximum ground pressure or recovery-system rating. Those values must come from the specific machine, engineered site controls and the conditions observed on the day.
For a final go/no-go decision, combine the site assessment with the dozer manufacturer’s manual and the competent person responsible for the work. If the route cannot provide continuous support or a controlled recovery option, do not commit the machine to it.
