To load a 20V cordless grease gun safely, remove its battery, load the correct cartridge or bulk grease exactly as the tool manual shows, reinstall the barrel, seat the follower rod, then bleed trapped air and prime the hose. Keep the hose pointed away from your body while priming, wear the eye protection specified by the manufacturer, and treat cartridge orientation, capacity, loader fittings and pressure limits as model-specific.
The DEWALT DCGG571B is a directly relevant 20V example. The Milwaukee 2646-20 instructions below are a useful manufacturer-documented comparison, but they are not a universal procedure and the 2646-20 should not be described as a 20V model. If the controls or barrel on your gun differ, stop and use the manual for the exact model and revision in your hands.

Before loading: identify the tool and make it safe
Read the identification label on the grease gun, then locate the operator or instruction manual for that exact model. A 20V battery platform does not standardize the barrel, follower rod, purge valve, priming valve, cartridge size, loader coupler or pressure behavior. The same loading mistake can leave one model full of air, damage another model’s fitting or create a contamination problem.
Remove the battery first
Take the battery pack out before removing the barrel, changing a cartridge, handling bulk grease or changing an accessory. This prevents an accidental trigger pull while your hands are near the follower rod, barrel or hose. Keep the battery out until the barrel is secured and the manual’s loading steps are complete.

Wear the specified eye protection
Milwaukee’s operator manual directs the user to wear safety goggles or glasses with side shields. Use the equivalent protection required by your own manual. Grease can escape unexpectedly during bleeding or priming, so do not substitute ordinary fashion eyewear for the protection specified by the tool maker.
Clean before opening the barrel
Wipe dirt, dust and debris from the outside of the barrel, its threads and the surfaces that contact it before disassembly. Milwaukee states: “Always make sure the barrel (inside and outside) and surfaces contacting the barrel are clean of dirt, dust and debris.” Contamination can enter the gun and clog its valve, turning a simple refill into a flow problem.
Confirm the grease and refill method
Use a grease type and consistency approved for the tool and the equipment being serviced. Check whether your model accepts a sealed cartridge, suction-loaded bulk grease, a loader-pump connection, or more than one method. Do not assume that a cartridge’s nominal weight, a bulk container or a filler pump is compatible simply because it fits the barrel.

The broad sequence is consistent across many tools—battery out, barrel open, cartridge installed, barrel secured, follower seated, then priming—but the details are not interchangeable. Cartridge orientation, the way the seal is removed and the follower-rod lock can differ. Use the following Milwaukee sequence only as a clearly labeled example of how one manufacturer documents the process.
Milwaukee 2646-20 cartridge procedure (manufacturer example)
- Remove the battery pack.
- Pull the follower rod back and secure it in the retaining slot. Make sure it is actually held in the slot; the manual warns that the rod can spring back.
- Unscrew and remove the barrel.
- Remove the cap from the new grease cartridge.
- Insert the cartridge with its open end going into the barrel first.
- Remove the cartridge seal.
- Reinstall the barrel and tighten it as directed by the manual.
- Release the follower rod from the retaining slot and press it fully into the barrel.
- Proceed to the priming procedure rather than assuming the gun is ready as soon as the barrel is attached.
This sequence belongs to the Milwaukee 2646-20 operator manual. Do not transfer its open-end direction, seal-removal order or rod-lock details to a different 20V gun without checking that gun’s instructions.

What to check after any cartridge change
- The cartridge is the size and grease specification permitted for the exact model and application.
- The barrel is fully seated and its contacting surfaces are free of grit.
- The follower rod is released from its retaining slot and is fully seated rather than hanging partway down the barrel.
- The hose and coupler are connected as the manual requires and are not damaged or contaminated.
Loading with bulk grease
Bulk filling can be done by suction through the open barrel or, on models that support it, through a loader coupler connected to a grease pump. The fitting, pressure rating and sealing arrangement are model-specific. Never improvise an adapter or assume that a high-pressure pump fitting is safe for the gun’s loader connection.
Suction loading: Milwaukee 2646-20 example
- Remove the battery pack.
- Remove the barrel from the gun.
- Place the open end of the barrel below the surface of the bulk grease.
- Draw the follower rod back and lock it in the retaining slot.
- Remove the barrel from the grease and wipe excess grease from its outside so it does not contaminate the gun or work area.
- Reinstall the barrel.
- Release the rod and press it fully into the barrel.
- Prime the gun before trying to lubricate a fitting.
The barrel must enter the bulk grease below its surface so that it draws grease rather than air. Keep the outside clean when you reinstall it. The rod can spring back if it is not securely locked, so keep hands clear of its path and verify the retaining slot is holding it before moving the barrel.
Pump loading through a loader coupler
The Milwaukee manual also describes loading from a pump through the loader coupler. Follow the exact connection and pressure instructions for that model. It calls for a low-pressure loader fitting and warns that the loader fitting must meet the specified compatibility and rating requirements. A generic “high-pressure” fitting is not automatically suitable; do not force a connection, use a homemade adapter or exceed the fitting’s rating.
DEWALT DCGG571B bulk filling
The DEWALT DCGG571 instruction material describes bulk filling and warns not to overfill during pump loading. After filling, it directs the operator to use the tool’s purge valve to bleed air. Consult the precise DEWALT manual revision that matches your DCGG571B before choosing suction or pump loading, because the manual’s valve and filling instructions govern the tool.
Bleeding air and priming the hose
A refill can leave an air pocket between the grease and the pump. DEWALT states: “Air pockets in the grease can cause the grease gun to lose prime.” A motor that runs without grease emerging does not prove that the pump has failed; first use the model’s prescribed bleed and prime procedure.

Milwaukee 2646-20 priming sequence
- Open the priming valve until trapped air escapes, following the manual’s direction for the valve.
- Hold the hose assembly by its spring strain relief and point the hose away from your body.
- Pull the trigger for 10–20 seconds.
- If grease does not appear, repeat the bleed and trigger sequence rather than immediately disassembling the gun.
The 10–20-second interval is a direction in the Milwaukee manual, not a guarantee that every cordless grease gun will prime in the same time. Keep your face, hands and other people out of the hose’s line while air and grease are expelled.

DEWALT DCGG571B priming sequence
For the DCGG571B, the instruction manual also gives a 10–20-second trigger step after trapped air has been bled through the purge valve. The product page lists an air-bleeder valve intended to assist pump priming after cartridge changes. Open and use that valve exactly as the manual shows; do not substitute the Milwaukee valve sequence for a DEWALT control layout.
When priming is complete
Priming is complete when a steady supply of grease reaches the hose without an air-only discharge. Close or reset the bleed control as the manual directs, then inspect the hose and coupler before approaching a grease fitting. If the gun still produces only air, stop and use the troubleshooting branch below.
Using the cordless grease gun on a fitting
Move the gun to the service point only after the hose has been primed. Clean the fitting before coupling so grit is not pushed into the joint. Attach the coupler using the method specified by the tool and coupler manufacturer; keep the hose supported by its spring strain relief rather than sharply bending it at the gun.
Control grease delivery
Use the trigger and operating mode provided by your model to meter grease. The DEWALT DCGG571B product information lists a variable-speed trigger, allowing the operator to regulate delivery rather than treating the trigger as an all-or-nothing switch. Apply only the amount and grease type required by the equipment manufacturer. A published maximum pressure is not a target pressure for every fitting.

Disconnect without pulling the hose
Do not detach a pressurized coupler by yanking on the hose. Follow the coupler’s release method and the service equipment’s pressure instructions. If the coupler will not release, stop rather than twisting the hose, forcing the fitting or adding an unapproved adapter.
Keep the hose pointed safely during testing
Whenever you are bleeding, priming or checking flow, point the hose away from your body and anyone nearby. The Milwaukee manual specifically directs the operator to hold the hose by its spring strain relief and point it away from the body during priming. Keep that same discipline when testing after a refill.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a grease gun is not pumping grease
Start with the simple causes identified in the Milwaukee troubleshooting instructions. Do not continue operating a gun that behaves abnormally or attempt an unverified repair around its pump, motor or pressure system.
Empty barrel or insufficient grease supply
Check that the cartridge is actually full, the seal was removed in the documented step and the follower rod is seated. For bulk grease, verify that the barrel entered the grease below its surface and that the gun was not overfilled during pump loading. Refill with an approved cartridge or grease if the supply is exhausted.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTrapped air after loading
Air is especially likely after a cartridge change or bulk refill. Open the model’s priming or purge control, keep the hose away from your body, and repeat the manual’s trigger interval. On the cited Milwaukee and DEWALT procedures, that interval is 10–20 seconds. If air continues, stop and check the cartridge, follower position and barrel seating before repeating the cycle.

Contamination or a clogged valve
Dirt on the barrel or contacting surfaces can enter the gun and clog its valve. Remove the battery, inspect only as far as the manual permits, and clean accessible surfaces without pushing debris farther into the mechanism. Do not poke a blockage with an improvised tool or introduce solvent or grease that the manufacturer has not approved.
Blocked fitting or abnormal pressure behavior
If the gun primes but grease will not enter a particular fitting, the blockage may be at the fitting or service component rather than in the gun. If the motor sounds abnormal, the pressure behavior is unexpected or the coupler will not release, stop using the tool and consult the product manual or manufacturer service support. The documented troubleshooting does not justify guessing at an internal repair.
Published specifications: DEWALT DCGG571B and Milwaukee 2646-20
The figures below are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent performance tests. They are useful for selecting a tool, but nominal pressure and flow should not be used to rank models without the same operating mode, grease, battery condition and test conditions.

| DEWALT DCGG571B | 20V cordless model; up to 10,000 PSI; up to 5 oz/min; 42-inch flexible hose; variable-speed trigger; air-bleeder valve intended to assist priming after cartridge changes. |
| Milwaukee 2646-20 | 14.5 oz cartridge capacity; 16 oz bulk capacity; up to 10,000 PSI maximum operating pressure; up to 10 oz/min in the manufacturer’s published operating modes. |
Capacity is not interchangeable between these models, and the Milwaukee loading steps are not a universal 20V procedure. When comparing another gun, check the same axes: cartridge capacity, bulk capacity, pressure and flow conditions, hose reach, priming or bleed features, loader-fitting requirements and battery platform.
Cleaning, storage and refill habits that prevent repeat problems
Clean the barrel every time it is opened
Wipe the barrel and its external and contacting surfaces before opening and again before reassembly. Keep the cartridge end, bulk-grease container and loader connection free of dust. A clean barrel reduces the chance that contamination reaches the valve during a refill.
Do not leave the rod in an unsafe position
When a manual uses a retaining slot, verify that the follower rod is fully captured before moving the barrel. After reassembly, release it and press it fully into the grease. A rod that is only partly seated can leave air in the barrel or spring back unexpectedly.
Protect the hose and coupler
Keep the hose from sharp bends and do not use it as a handle. Do not pull on it to release a pressurized coupler. Inspect the connection for contamination before the next use and replace damaged components only with parts approved for the model.
Record the grease used
If a machine or fleet requires a particular grease specification, keep that information with the gun or service kit. Mixing an unapproved grease, changing consistency without checking compatibility or using a filler pump with the wrong fitting can create a flow or equipment problem even when the gun itself is operating normally.
