How to Choose Conduit and Fittings for Concrete Encasement

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the conduit category named in the project documents before you choose a wall thickness or fitting. Concrete-encased utility duct is covered by NEMA TC 6 & 8, where EB-20 and EB-35 are the named encased-burial types. Electrical PVC conduit is covered by NEMA TC 2, where EPC-40 is normal duty and EPC-80 is for heavy-duty areas exposed to physical damage; both include concrete-encased applications. Then select fittings under the matching fitting standard, confirm trade size and joining method, and obtain approval from the design professional and authority having jurisdiction (AHJ). A concrete pour by itself does not automatically make EPC-80, EB duct, or any particular fitting mandatory.

Start with the application, not the product label

The phrase conduit under concrete can describe two different systems. NEMA TC 6 & 8-2020 covers PVC utility duct for underground communications and electrical wire and cable. NEMA TC 2-2020 covers electrical PVC conduit. Those standards use different designations, and their fitting provisions are not interchangeable by assumption.

Read the plan notes, riser diagrams, utility owner standards, and equipment schedules for the system name. Look for terms such as utility duct, electrical PVC conduit, EB, DB, EPC-40, or EPC-80. If the documents use only a generic phrase such as PVC conduit, ask the engineer or utility owner to identify the governing standard before ordering material.

Concrete-encased utility duct: EB versus DB

What EB-20 and EB-35 mean

NEMA TC 6 & 8-2020 identifies Type EB-20 and Type EB-35 as utility duct types designed for burial encased in concrete. They are the direct matches when a utility duct bank is intentionally designed as a concrete-encased installation. The type designation must appear on the product information or marking required by the project; do not infer compliance from a seller’s description that merely says heavy-duty PVC or underground PVC.

What DB designations mean

The same standard identifies DB-60, DB-100, and DB-120 for direct burial without a concrete-encasement requirement. The standard also allows DB duct to be encased where the project specifies that use. That does not mean DB is automatically an acceptable substitute for EB. The engineer, utility owner, or contract specification may require EB, may permit a particular DB type, or may impose additional loading and installation conditions.

Utility duct type Stated design category in NEMA TC 6 & 8-2020 How to use the information
EB-20 Designed for burial encased in concrete Use when the project identifies EB-20 or permits this type for the calculated duct-bank design
EB-35 Designed for burial encased in concrete Use when the project identifies EB-35 or permits this type for the calculated duct-bank design
DB-60 Designed for direct burial without a concrete-encasement requirement; DB may also be encased where specified Do not substitute solely because the duct will be surrounded by concrete; obtain written design approval
DB-100 Designed for direct burial without a concrete-encasement requirement; DB may also be encased where specified Verify that the specified DB type, loading assumptions, and markings match the duct-bank documents
DB-120 Designed for direct burial without a concrete-encasement requirement; DB may also be encased where specified Use only when the project documents and authority accept it for the encased installation

How to select the utility duct type

  1. Identify the owner of the duct bank. A communications carrier, electric utility, transportation agency, or private electrical system may each publish different approved-material lists.
  2. Read the duct-bank detail. Record the named standard, type, trade size, number of ducts, arrangement, spacers, bends, and any concrete or loading notes.
  3. Resolve EB/DB ambiguity before procurement. If the detail says only PVC duct, ask whether EB-20, EB-35, or an approved DB type is intended.
  4. Check product markings and documentation. Require the type designation, nominal size, standard reference, and manufacturer identification needed by the specification. A catalog category alone is not proof that a particular shipment complies.
  5. Confirm the complete assembly. Duct, couplings, elbows, end bells, spacers, caps, and pulling accessories must be compatible with the specified type and installation method.

Fittings for utility duct: use the matching family

NEMA TC 9-2020 distinguishes Type EB fittings, designed for encased burial, from Type DB fittings, designed for direct burial without a required concrete encasement. TC 9 also states that DB fittings may be encased. The practical rule is to match the fitting family to the duct family unless the project documents expressly permit another combination.

What to verify on every duct fitting

  • Fitting family: EB or DB as required by the duct-bank specification.
  • Nominal trade size: The fitting opening and the duct outside dimensions must match; do not rely on a nominal size that belongs to a different product series.
  • Geometry: Elbow angle, bend radius, sweep, and entry orientation must fit the approved duct-bank detail and pulling route.
  • Joining method: Use the coupling or solvent-cement system identified by the product instructions and project specification.
  • End treatment: Protect open ducts from concrete, dirt, and water during placement, and use the specified bell, cap, or temporary plug.
  • Compatibility evidence: Obtain manufacturer documentation when a fitting and duct come from different product lines. Do not assume that two PVC components with the same nominal size are automatically compatible.

For a concrete-encased duct bank, the fitting choice affects the finished pathway even though the concrete later hides much of the assembly. A wrong-radius elbow, an incompatible coupling, or an unprotected opening can make cable installation difficult or force demolition after the pour.

Electrical PVC conduit: EPC-40 or EPC-80?

The duty distinction

NEMA TC 2-2020 describes EPC-40 for normal-duty applications and EPC-80 for heavy-duty areas of physical damage. Both categories include concrete-encased applications. Therefore, the fact that a raceway is surrounded by concrete does not, by itself, prove that EPC-80 is required.

Electrical PVC category Stated duty in NEMA TC 2-2020 Concrete-encased use Selection question
EPC-40 Normal-duty applications Included among the applications described by the standard Does the project classify the location as normal duty and specify EPC-40?
EPC-80 Heavy-duty areas of physical damage Included among the applications described by the standard Is there a documented heavy-duty or physical-damage condition requiring EPC-80?

Do not treat EPC-40 and EPC-80 as a universal synonym for every product marketed as Schedule 40 or Schedule 80. Confirm the exact marking and standard reference required by the project. A supplier may use schedule terminology as shorthand, while the contract may require an EPC designation, a particular listing, or a different raceway system.

How to decide whether the location is heavy duty

Start with the design classification, not a personal rule of thumb. Ask whether the conduit is exposed to physical damage before encasement, at transitions, near equipment, in a traffic area, or in another location identified by the engineer or code official. NEMA TC 2-2020 establishes the EPC-40/EPC-80 duty categories but does not establish a universal threshold for when every site becomes heavy duty. The adopted electrical code, project specification, and AHJ determine that decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Electrical conduit selection sequence

  1. Confirm that the raceway is electrical conduit, not utility duct. If the plan is for a utility duct bank, return to the EB/DB decision instead of choosing EPC-40 or EPC-80.
  2. Read the raceway schedule and notes. Record the required EPC type, nominal trade size, number of raceways, bend limits, and encasement detail.
  3. Classify physical-damage exposure. If the documents do not state normal or heavy duty, obtain a design clarification rather than upgrading or downgrading by guesswork.
  4. Verify the full product marking. Match the shipment to the specified standard, type, size, and required certification or listing.
  5. Choose fittings separately. TC 2 does not fully address elbows and fittings, so use the applicable fitting standard and the manufacturer’s compatibility instructions.

Choosing PVC elbows and fittings for electrical conduit

NEMA TC 2-2020 says it does not fully address elbows and fittings. NEMA’s 2022 Electrical Standards & Products Guide identifies TC 3-2021 as covering PVC fittings for rigid PVC conduit and tubing, with field joining by solvent cement. That guide is a summary of the standard’s scope, so confirm the current project edition and the complete fitting requirements before purchase.

Fitting checks that prevent rework

  • Match the fitting to rigid PVC conduit or tubing, not merely to the nominal diameter.
  • Use the elbow radius and angle shown on the approved layout. A shorter sweep may exceed the pulling or conductor-bending limits even when it fits physically.
  • Confirm that the fitting and conduit are intended for the same joining method and solvent-cement system.
  • Check whether the specification requires listed, identified, or manufacturer-approved components.
  • Verify transition fittings where PVC changes to metal, equipment hubs, boxes, or exposed raceway.
  • Protect the raceway interior from concrete intrusion and keep the planned pull path continuous through every bend.

Do not select fittings from the conduit label alone. A conduit marked EPC-40 or EPC-80 does not tell you the elbow radius, transition hardware, or solvent-cement requirements.

When metal conduit is specified

Some projects call for RMC, IMC, or EMT instead of PVC, including at exposed transitions or where grounding, impact resistance, or equipment connections govern. NEMA FB 2.10-2021 provides selection and installation guidance for fittings used with those non-flexible metal conduit and tubing systems in accordance with the NEC. The cited material does not establish one metal type as the correct choice for every concrete-encasement project.

If metal raceway appears on the drawings, confirm the exact type, coating, corrosion environment, grounding and bonding method, threaded or compression fitting requirements, and the adopted NEC edition. Do not replace a specified PVC utility duct or electrical PVC conduit with metal simply because the metal fitting literature is familiar.

A complete selection workflow before ordering

  1. Collect the controlling documents. Use the latest issued-for-construction drawings, specifications, utility-owner standards, equipment schedules, addenda, and approved submittal requirements.
  2. Name the system. Write down either utility duct under TC 6 & 8 or electrical PVC conduit under TC 2. If the documents do not make that distinction, submit a clarification request.
  3. Record the required type. For utility duct, identify EB-20, EB-35, or an expressly permitted DB type. For electrical PVC, identify EPC-40 or EPC-80 and the reason for the duty classification.
  4. Build the size and geometry schedule. List every trade size, straight length, elbow angle, bend radius, coupling, transition, spacer, end bell, cap, and termination. Do not infer size from conductor count without the engineer’s fill calculation.
  5. Verify fitting standards. Use TC 9 for the EB/DB utility-fitting distinction and TC 3 for PVC conduit fittings as identified by NEMA’s guide. Use the applicable metal-fitting guidance when the design calls for RMC, IMC, or EMT.
  6. Check compatibility and joining instructions. Confirm that duct, conduit, fittings, and cement or mechanical connectors are approved as an assembly. Keep the manufacturer’s instructions with the submittal.
  7. Resolve site conditions. Ask the design team to confirm cover, spacing, concrete strength, reinforcement conflicts, loading, temperature exposure, groundwater, and transitions. These values are project-specific and are not supplied by the product designation alone.
  8. Submit before procurement. Include product data, type and size markings, fitting data, joining method, and a marked-up duct-bank or raceway schedule. Wait for required approval before substituting a different type.
  9. Inspect deliveries. Check markings, damage, ovality, contamination, cracked bells, distorted fittings, and missing caps. Segregate nonconforming material before it reaches the trench.
  10. Protect the pathway during placement. Keep ducts aligned and capped, maintain the approved spacing, and prevent concrete or debris from entering. Follow the project method statement for bracing and pour sequencing.

Information the conduit type does not provide

EB-20, EB-35, EPC-40, and EPC-80 are useful classifications, but none of those labels alone supplies a complete duct-bank design. The cited standards evidence does not establish a universal value for:

  • conduit trade size for a particular cable set;
  • conductor fill, derating, or pulling-tension limits;
  • duct spacing, concrete cover, reinforcement, or encasement dimensions;
  • concrete compressive strength or placement sequence;
  • traffic, soil, groundwater, frost, or surcharge loading;
  • maximum temperature, expansion provisions, or transition details;
  • the currently adopted NEC edition or local amendments; or
  • the AHJ’s required listing, inspection, testing, or utility-owner approval.

Obtain those values from the project engineer, governing code, utility owner, and AHJ. If the design lacks them, stop procurement and request a written clarification. Choosing a thicker-looking product cannot compensate for an incomplete structural, electrical, or utility design.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Mistake: treating all underground PVC as the same product

Correction: Separate utility duct under TC 6 & 8 from electrical PVC conduit under TC 2. Use the designation named by the documents and retain the supporting product data.

Mistake: assuming concrete automatically requires the highest duty

Correction: For electrical PVC, EPC-40 and EPC-80 both include concrete-encased applications. Select EPC-80 when the project identifies heavy-duty or physical-damage exposure, not merely because a pour is planned.

Mistake: substituting DB for EB without approval

Correction: TC 6 & 8 describes EB-20 and EB-35 for concrete-encased burial and DB types for direct burial, while permitting DB to be encased where specified. Treat that permission as a design decision, not a blanket substitution rule.

Mistake: buying elbows from a different product family

Correction: Match EB or DB utility fittings under TC 9, and verify electrical PVC fittings under TC 3 and the manufacturer’s instructions. Confirm dimensions and joining method rather than relying on a nominal size.

Mistake: using a generic Schedule 40/80 description as the approval

Correction: Require the exact EPC marking or utility-duct type, standard reference, size, and project-required listing. Preserve the approved submittal so the installed product can be checked later.

Mistake: overlooking transitions and temporary protection

Correction: Detail every transition to boxes, equipment, exposed raceway, or another material. Cap open ends, protect bells and threads, and inspect the pathway before concrete placement.

Practical decision examples

Example 1: communications duct bank

The drawings call for underground communications ducts in a concrete-encased bank and identify NEMA TC 6 & 8. The correct first comparison is EB-20 versus EB-35, followed by the specified trade size and Type EB fittings under TC 9. A DB product should be considered only if the engineer or owner expressly permits that substitution and the complete assembly remains compliant.

Example 2: electrical feeder raceways under a slab

The electrical schedule identifies PVC conduit and the location is classified as normal duty. Confirm that EPC-40 is the specified category, then select compatible rigid-PVC elbows and couplings under the applicable fitting requirements. Do not upgrade to EPC-80 solely because the raceways will be encased.

Example 3: raceway in a documented physical-damage area

The project identifies electrical PVC conduit in a heavy-duty area exposed to physical damage. EPC-80 may be the specified category under TC 2, but the final choice still depends on the project documents, code edition, markings, size, and fitting details. The concrete portion does not eliminate the need to address exposed transitions and connection points.

Procurement and submittal checklist

  • Application identified as utility duct or electrical PVC conduit.
  • Governing standard and edition recorded.
  • EB-20, EB-35, approved DB type, EPC-40, or EPC-80 designation matches the drawings.
  • Trade sizes and quantities match the latest schedule.
  • Every elbow, coupling, transition, spacer, end bell, cap, and termination is listed.
  • Fitting family and joining method are compatible with the duct or conduit.
  • Product markings, listings, and manufacturer data are included.
  • Owner, engineer, and AHJ approvals are obtained where required.
  • Project-specific cover, spacing, loading, concrete, and inspection requirements are resolved.
  • Delivery inspection and concrete-placement protection are assigned to a responsible person.

The safest purchasing instruction is specific: name the application, standard, type, trade size, fitting family, joining method, and approval requirement. A request for simply “PVC conduit for concrete” leaves too many design decisions unresolved.

Bottom line for the field and the estimator

For concrete-encased utility duct, begin with EB-20 or EB-35 under NEMA TC 6 & 8-2020 and select the corresponding Type EB fittings under TC 9 unless the project expressly approves a DB alternative. For electrical PVC conduit, use the EPC-40 normal-duty or EPC-80 heavy-duty classification required by the design; both categories include concrete-encased applications. Treat fittings as a separate compatibility decision, using the applicable PVC fitting standard and manufacturer instructions. Finally, verify the complete assembly against the current project documents, adopted code, local amendments, utility-owner rules, and AHJ approval before ordering or pouring concrete.
