To install solar lights, place the panel where it receives as much direct daytime sun as possible, mount the fixture using its supplied stake or bracket, set the switch as the manual directs, and allow the model-specific initial charge. Exact assembly, switch positions, and charging times differ by product, so follow the instructions for your light rather than assuming one setup fits all.
Choose a sunny location for the panel
Solar lights need daylight at the panel to recharge. Choose an open location with direct sunlight and as little shade as practical. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program recommends that fixed PV arrays be free of shadows during peak sunlight hours, using 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. solar time as a rule of thumb. That guidance is for PV systems generally, not a guaranteed requirement for every small garden light. DOE FEMP solar PV system design basics.
If your light has a separate panel, choose the panel position for sunlight independently from the lamp head’s position. Aim the lamp at the path, planting bed, or feature you want to illuminate, while keeping the panel exposed to sun.
Check the parts and mounting instructions
Before assembly, read the product manual and identify the included parts, mounting options, switch controls, and initial charging requirements. Some consumer lights use a ground stake; others include a wall or deck bracket. Use the supplied fittings and the mounting sequence specified for your model. Do not force the lamp head into the ground.

For a stake-mounted light
- Check for buried utility lines and pipes before inserting a stake. Use the appropriate local utility-location service if needed.
- Prepare the ground only as the product instructions allow. One manufacturer’s guidance recommends loosening hard soil or softening it rather than forcing the fixture into it.
- Insert the stake as directed, then attach the light head. Push on the stake or its designated insertion point—not the lamp head.
For a wall or deck-mounted light
Use the bracket and fixings supplied or specified by the manufacturer, and follow its instructions for the mounting surface and screw placement. Some spotlights support both stake and wall or deck mounting; the options are model-dependent.
Switch on and allow the initial charge
Remove any protective film from the panel if the product has one. Set the switch to the required operating position—often marked ON or AUTO, but the exact control varies—and place the panel in direct sunlight for the initial charge specified in the manual.

Charging requirements are not universal. For example, Thea spotlight instructions request three days of charging before first use; another model may specify a different period. Do not assume a particular number of hours or days will produce full runtime unless the manual for your exact light says so.
Check operation after dark
Once it is dark, confirm that the light turns on automatically. Many models use a photocell or similar sensor to detect darkness. Nearby porch, street, or flood lights can interfere with automatic operation on some products, so avoid placing the sensor where another light shines directly on it.

Troubleshoot a light that stays off or runs dimly
It does not turn on at dusk
- Confirm that the switch is in the required operating position.
- Check whether the panel received adequate direct sunlight during the day.
- Look for nearby artificial light shining on the dusk sensor.
It is dim or runs for a short time
Insufficient sunlight or a dirty panel can reduce charging. Clean the panel as the manual directs and allow additional charging time if the manufacturer recommends it.
It still does not work
Consult the exact product manual before replacing a battery. Battery chemistry, size, voltage, and polarity vary by model. One garden-light system’s manual, for example, specifies Ni-MH rechargeable batteries and correct polarity; that specification should not be applied to other lights unless their manuals confirm it.
