For a smooth-running drawer, mount the cabinet slides level, square and parallel; fit the matching drawer slides; then insert the drawer, test its travel and adjust before tightening every screw. First check the exact slide model’s mounting instructions and required clearance: epoxy-coated roller slides do not all use the same dimensions or hardware.
Check the slide model and fit before drilling
Confirm the slide length, cabinet depth, drawer width, mounting style and required side clearance in the manufacturer’s instructions. Check whether the slides are handed, whether they use rear brackets and whether the drawer member disconnects or lifts out. Cabinet and drawer parts should be square, and the space for each slide should remain consistent along its length. Accuride’s general installation guidance emphasizes parallel alignment and directs installers to the product-specific guide for dimensions.
Specifications vary by model. For example, Grass America’s RSS-03/25 specification sheet describes side- and bottom-mount configurations, 3/4-inch extension, 12.7 mm (1/2 inch) side clearance, a 75 lb load capacity and a maximum drawer width of 36 inches. Knape & Vogt’s 1805 product information describes a 75 lb-class, 3/4-extension epoxy-coated slide with lift-out disconnect; a 12-inch 1805 listing specifies 1/2 inch of clearance per side. These are examples, not universal epoxy-slide dimensions.
Install and align the slides
- Identify the cabinet and drawer members. Separate them if the selected slide design allows it. Match left and right parts as required by the product instructions, and confirm which member attaches to the cabinet and which to the drawer.
- Position the cabinet members. WOOD Magazine’s procedure sets each cabinet member 1/32 inch back from the cabinet face, starts with a screw near the front and holds the slide perpendicular to the face-frame opening. Use a level to keep the pair even when the cabinet is level. Treat that setback as the magazine’s method, not a dimension for every slide; follow the selected model’s instructions if they differ. - Check that the cabinet members are parallel. Measure from each slide to the cabinet side at both the front and rear. Consistent gaps indicate that the slide runs parallel to the side. If using rear mounting brackets, initially fasten through the horizontal slot so the bracket can still move side to side for adjustment.
- Attach the drawer members. WOOD Magazine’s example sets each member 1/32 inch back from the drawer front, secures the front area first and adds a rear screw. Position both sides consistently and use the model’s instructions for any different setback or fastening pattern.
- Insert the drawer and test it. Check that it travels smoothly and that the front aligns with the cabinet face. Use a straightedge to check the face. If the drawer binds or sits unevenly, adjust the slide position before adding the remaining screws.
- Finish fastening after adjustment. When the drawer runs smoothly and the front is aligned, drive the remaining screws. A magnetic drawer-slide mounting tool can help hold a member during installation, but it is optional.

If the drawer binds
Check that the cabinet members remain parallel and that side gaps are consistent from front to rear. If the installation has adjustable rear brackets, loosen the bracket screw, shift the bracket slightly and retest. Make small adjustments rather than forcing the drawer through a tight spot.

If the drawer front is not even
Check the front with a straightedge. Where the slide has a rear bracket with adjustment slots, use the slots to reposition it. In the bracket arrangement shown by WOOD Magazine, the horizontal slot provides side-to-side adjustment and the vertical slot allows height adjustment; restore a screw in the horizontal slot after making a vertical adjustment. Slot functions and bracket designs vary, so use the instructions for your slide.
If the drawer width or clearance is uncertain
Measure the drawer and cabinet opening, then compare those dimensions with the exact product’s drawing. Do not assume that one roller-slide model’s clearance applies to another. For instance, the cited 1805 listing specifies 1/2 inch per side, while the Grass RSS-03/25 sheet specifies 12.7 mm for its documented system.
