There is no universal method for installing diagonal bracing. The correct sequence depends on the structure: metal-plate-connected wood trusses and tube-and-coupler scaffolds use different members, purposes, layouts and rules. Identify the structure before following any video, then use the project drawings and the instructions that govern that system.
For wood trusses, the installation sequence is to secure the first truss, restrain each succeeding truss laterally, brace the top-chord plane, brace web-member planes, stabilize bottom-chord planes and keep ground bracing in place until the initial group is properly restrained. For tube-and-coupler scaffolds, OSHA requirements address transverse bracing, longitudinal diagonal bracing and building ties; those requirements do not transfer to roof or floor trusses.

Start by naming the structure
“How do you install diagonal bracing?” is incomplete until the structure is identified. A diagonal in a roof truss is part of a temporary erection and permanent restraint system. A diagonal on a tube-and-coupler scaffold helps keep a freestanding access structure aligned and stable. The members may look similar in a video, but their design assumptions and attachment points are not interchangeable.
| Structure | What the bracing stabilizes | Primary guidance | What a video must show |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metal-plate-connected wood trusses | Individual trusses, top-chord and bottom-chord planes, and web-member planes during erection and service | Building plans, the Building Component Safety Information (BCSI) guidance, and the truss design | Ground bracing, temporary lateral restraint, plane bracing, fastening at bearings and the point at which ground bracing may be removed |
| Tube-and-coupler scaffolds | Rows of posts and runners in transverse and longitudinal directions | Applicable OSHA scaffold provisions and the scaffold configuration | Transverse braces, approximately 45-degree longitudinal braces, building ties and attachment details |
If a video does not state which system it demonstrates, do not use it as an installation plan. Stop and obtain the drawings, manufacturer or engineer instructions, and the applicable safety requirements.

Wood trusses: the installation sequence
SBCA’s step-by-step overview describes a sequence for stabilizing an initial group of trusses. It is an overview, not a substitute for the building plans, a qualified design or the detailed BCSI instructions. Exact lumber dimensions, fasteners, spacing and locations must come from the project documents.
1. Prepare the work and the temporary bracing
Before lifting a truss, identify the bearing points, the direction of installation and every temporary restraint shown on the plan. Lay out the ground bracing so it can support the first group while the structure is still vulnerable to rolling or racking. A plausible material category is lumber for temporary truss bracing, but the required size, grade, length, fastening schedule and layout are project-specific.

A brace that is present but attached to an unsuitable point is not an effective restraint.
2. Secure and check the first truss
Set the first truss on its designated bearings and secure it to the ground bracing. Check three conditions before proceeding:
- Straight: the truss is not bowed along its length.
- In plane: the truss is aligned with the intended truss line rather than twisted or displaced sideways.
- Plumb: the truss is vertical when viewed from the end.
Correct alignment now. The next trusses will repeat any error and can increase the force on temporary braces. Do not rely on the eventual roof sheathing or ceiling finish to correct a truss that was set out of position.
3. Set succeeding trusses with temporary lateral restraint
Place the next trusses using temporary lateral restraint and the ground bracing. Fasten each truss at its bearing points as specified by the project information. Temporary lateral restraint keeps the new truss from rolling while it is being connected and while the next member is lifted.
Maintain the intended spacing and continuously check that the truss line remains straight and plumb. A diagonal brace should not be used to pull a truss into a position that contradicts the layout; correct the position, then secure it with the specified restraint.
4. Add top-chord plane bracing or correctly applied structural sheathing
After the initial trusses are set and restrained, install the top-chord diagonal bracing shown for the project. This braces the top-chord plane against lateral movement while the roof system is incomplete.

SBCA identifies correctly applied structural sheathing as an alternative to top-chord diagonal bracing in the described sequence. “Sheathing” is not automatically an alternative merely because panels are available: the fastening pattern, panel direction, starting location and installation timing must match the design and the applicable guidance. If the plans call for diagonal bracing, do not omit it without an approved alternative.
5. Brace the web-member planes
Install web-member plane diagonal bracing where the drawings and BCSI instructions require it. Webs can buckle or move out of plane before the truss assembly has enough restraint. Keep the brace in the plane and connect it to the members and locations specified; attaching a brace to a convenient but unapproved point can leave the critical web unsupported.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBCSI-2025 revised permanent web-member diagonal-brace spacing according to compression force. SBCA reports that the spacing can range from three truss spaces for high-force web members to ten truss spaces for lower-force members. Those figures are not a universal spacing rule: the required interval depends on the member force and the project’s design. Use the schedule or details for the actual truss rather than applying one number to every job.
6. Stabilize the bottom-chord planes
Provide temporary lateral restraint and diagonal bracing for the bottom-chord planes as the installation sequence requires. Bottom chords can move sideways even when the top chords appear aligned. Connect the restraint before workers load the trusses or use the framing as a work platform.
For long-span trusses, SBCA notes that web-member-plane diagonal bracing and bracing at the top edge of bottom chords can provide resistance during installation and throughout the building’s life. This is context for where stability may be needed, not a project-specific design prescription.
7. Keep ground bracing until the initial group is stabilized
Do not remove ground bracing simply because several trusses are standing. SBCA’s sequence calls for keeping it in place until diagonal bracing and lateral restraints have been installed for the first five trusses. Continue the same installation pattern in groups as described by the project information.
Removal is a planned transition, not a convenience step. If the top-chord, web-member or bottom-chord restraint is incomplete, the ground bracing is still carrying an essential part of the temporary stability system.

| Approach | Role | Decision point | Typical mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Temporary lateral restraint | Holds each newly set truss in position until the planes are stabilized | Used during erection according to the sequence and drawings | Removing it before the required diagonal and permanent restraint are installed |
| Top-chord diagonal bracing | Stabilizes the top-chord plane while the roof assembly is incomplete | Install where the project details call for it | Treating any diagonal board as an acceptable substitute without checking attachment and location |
| Structural sheathing | Can serve as the described top-chord-plane alternative when correctly applied | Only when panel type, orientation and fastening meet the design | Assuming partial or incorrectly fastened sheathing provides full restraint |
| Web-member and bottom-chord bracing | Controls out-of-plane movement and supports stability during installation and service | Spacing and locations follow member forces and project instructions | Applying one spacing to every truss or span |
Tube-and-coupler scaffolds: a separate bracing system
OSHA’s scaffold provisions address tube-and-coupler scaffolds through a different arrangement of braces and ties. Do not copy the wood-truss sequence onto a scaffold, and do not treat a scaffold diagonal as a generic construction brace.
Transverse bracing
OSHA describes transverse bracing at scaffold ends and at intervals across the posts and runners. The transverse members keep the rows from moving across the scaffold width. Their location depends on the scaffold configuration and the applicable rule, so a video should show the end condition and the repeated pattern rather than presenting one isolated cross-brace.
Longitudinal diagonal bracing
On straight-run scaffolds, OSHA’s regulation states: “On straight run scaffolds, longitudinal bracing across the inner and outer rows of posts shall be installed diagonally in both directions, and shall extend from the base of the end posts upward to the top of the scaffold at approximately a 45 degree angle.” This requirement is specific to the scaffold provision and its configuration. The brace must be arranged in both directions, not merely placed on one face.
Building ties and bearer levels
OSHA’s explanatory material calls for building ties at bearer levels between transverse braces. Ties connect the scaffold to the building and help control movement that diagonal members alone cannot address. A video that shows braces but never explains ties is incomplete for a scaffold erected alongside a structure.
Attachment where a direct post connection is not possible
OSHA also discusses attaching braces close to posts when conditions prevent direct attachment to the post. The precise connection depends on the scaffold arrangement and the rule being applied. Do not improvise a distant attachment because it looks visually similar to a compliant detail; verify the allowed location and the component’s capacity.
Inspect the complete scaffold system
Check that couplers are properly installed, posts and runners remain aligned, braces are connected at the intended points, ties are present where required, and the base and supporting surface are suitable. A scaffold can appear square from one side while lacking longitudinal restraint or building ties in the other direction.

How to judge a diagonal-bracing video
Use a video as a visual supplement, not as a replacement for the project documents. A useful video should make the following information explicit:
- Named structure: wood truss, tube-and-coupler scaffold or another defined system.
- Purpose of each brace: temporary erection restraint, plane bracing, web restraint, bottom-chord restraint or scaffold alignment.
- Connection details: where each end is attached and what fastening or coupler is required.
- Sequence: what must be installed before the next lift, truss or scaffold bay.
- Removal conditions: when temporary braces may be taken out and what permanent restraint replaces them.
- Limits: a clear statement that project drawings, design documents and applicable regulations control.
Reject a video that uses “diagonal bracing” as if it were one universal technique, gives a single spacing without identifying the system, or shows workers removing braces before the stabilized assembly is complete.

Common failures and what to do
The structure is not identified
Pause the work. Determine whether the members are roof or floor trusses, a tube-and-coupler scaffold or another system. Obtain the relevant drawings and instructions before selecting a brace layout.
Bracing is attached at convenient locations
Convenience does not establish capacity. Compare every brace end with the project detail or applicable scaffold requirement. If the intended point is inaccessible, obtain an approved detail rather than moving the connection arbitrarily.

Reinstall or secure the temporary system and have the responsible supervisor or qualified person assess the assembly. For the SBCA truss sequence, ground bracing remains until the first five trusses have the required diagonal bracing and lateral restraints.
One spacing is applied to every truss
Check the truss design and BCSI-2025 guidance. Permanent web-member diagonal-brace spacing varies with compression force; the three- to ten-truss-space range is an application-specific range, not a default layout.
A scaffold has longitudinal braces on only one side
Review the OSHA requirement for the scaffold configuration. Straight-run scaffolds require longitudinal bracing across the inner and outer rows, diagonally in both directions, at approximately 45 degrees, together with the required transverse bracing and building ties.
Documents that control the work
For metal-plate-connected wood trusses, use the building plans, the truss design information and the Building Component Safety Information Guide, 2025 Edition. SBCA identifies that edition as its current guidance for safe handling, installation, restraint and bracing, and its spacing update reflects compression-force differences in web members.

For tube-and-coupler scaffolds, use the applicable OSHA scaffold requirements, including the explanatory material in “Safety Standards for Scaffolds Used in the Construction Industry” and the regulatory drawings and illustrations in OSHA 1926 Subpart L, Appendix E. The governing scaffold configuration matters; a detail for one arrangement should not be generalized to another.
When the drawings, the visible conditions and the video disagree, stop and resolve the conflict through the project’s qualified designer, truss supplier, scaffold competent person or other responsible authority. Stability work is not the place for an improvised compromise.
