How to Install Cork Flooring: Floating Planks vs. Glue-Down Tiles

Install cork flooring according to its exact product system: click-lock planks float over approved underlayment, while cork tiles are bonded to the subfloor with a specified adhesive. The preparation, movement gaps, moisture limits, tools, finishing and warranty conditions are different. Identify the product first, read its current installation and warranty documents, and verify the room and substrate before opening adhesive or finish.

Choose the installation method before buying supplies

Cork flooring is not one installation system. A floating plank has a locking edge and rests over an approved underlayment without being fastened to the subfloor. A glue-down tile is permanently bonded with the adhesive and application method named by its manufacturer. Specialty cork products, including wall panels and mosaic tiles, have their own instructions.

Decision Floating/click-lock planks Glue-down cork tiles
Attachment Interlocking boards sit over approved underlayment; they are not fastened to the subfloor. Tiles are bonded with the product-approved adhesive and application process.
Movement Perimeter and doorway expansion planning is essential. Fixed cabinets and heavy objects must not pin the floor where the guide prohibits it. Because the tile is bonded, its perimeter, joints and substrate requirements follow a different guide.
Substrate concerns Requires a clean, dry, flat and sound base. Concrete may require moisture testing and a vapor-control layer. Moisture, alkalinity, grade and existing-floor restrictions can be stricter and are product-specific.
Typical equipment Approved underlayment, spacers, a tapping block, mallet and a pull bar or pry bar, subject to the locking profile. Approved adhesive, roller or applicator, layout and cutting tools, and sometimes a weighted floor roller.
Best fit A room where the subfloor can meet the plank tolerances and the floor can expand freely. A room where the subfloor and adhesive system can meet the tile manufacturer’s bonding and moisture requirements.

Do not substitute a floating-plank guide for a tile guide. CanCork’s installation hub separates floating floors, glue-down tiles, preparation, underlayment, transitions and finishes; Jelinek Cork Group likewise publishes separate floating and glue-down documents. The product selected, not a general cork-floor rule, controls the work.

Pre-installation checks that prevent failures

Confirm the exact product and documents

Record the manufacturer, collection, plank or tile size, locking profile or adhesive system, finish and intended room. Download the current installation, maintenance and warranty documents before ordering consumables. Jelinek’s documentation page, for example, noted a mosaic-tile instruction update in July 2026, illustrating why an older guide may not be adequate.

  • Confirm the required underlayment, vapor-control material, adhesive, primer and finish by name.
  • Read warranty exclusions before changing the specified installation system.

Inspect the room and substrate

The base must be clean, dry, flat and structurally sound. Remove dust, grease, loose material, high spots and anything that could telegraph through a tile or prevent a plank from locking. A slab that looks dry may still contain damaging moisture. AmCork and iCork’s tile instructions call for concrete moisture testing and provide limits and mitigation measures for their respective systems; those values must not be merged into a single industry-wide limit.

Check transitions, door clearances, vertical pipes, island panels, stairs and fixed cabinetry before laying material. Draw the floor area and mark where movement joints or doorway transitions will be required. If a guide prohibits pinning a floating floor under cabinets or heavy fixed objects, alter the layout or choose a different system before installation.

Inspect cartons and plan the layout

Cork is a natural material, so shade and texture can vary. Open and inspect cartons before cutting. Globus Cork advises handling tiles so natural variation is balanced, while AmCork also warns that opened cartons should be checked at the job site. Blend boards or tiles from several cartons instead of creating a visible block of one shade. Report defects or concerns before installation; laying the material generally indicates acceptance of its appearance.

Acclimate the cork under the product’s schedule

Acclimation is not universal. A Forna floating-floor warning sheet specifies 48–72 hours. AmCork says opened cartons should remain at the job site for 48–72 hours, while Globus’s tile guide calls for four days. These are separate supplier instructions, not a single requirement for every cork floor.

  1. Bring the sealed or opened cartons to the controlled installation space exactly as the product guide directs.
  2. Keep cartons in the orientation and packaging specified; do not improvise stacking that could deform boards or tiles.
  3. Maintain the temperature and humidity conditions required by the selected guide.
  4. Use the acclimation period to complete moisture testing, substrate repairs and layout planning rather than starting early.

Floating cork plank installation

Gather compatible tools and materials

Use only the underlayment and accessories approved for the plank. A tapping block must fit the locking edge without damaging it. A mallet, spacers, tape measure, square, sharp cutting tool, pull bar or pry bar and transition profiles may be needed. Confirm the manufacturer’s tool list; a generic flooring tool can chip a locking profile or close a joint incorrectly.

Set the movement allowance

Floating floors need room to expand and contract. Forna’s cited instructions specify a minimum 1/2-inch gap at walls and vertical obstructions, require planning for runs longer than 25 feet and call for expansion gaps or transitions through doorways. A separate AmCork guide specifies a 1/4-inch perimeter gap. Both dimensions are correct only for the named systems; use the number in your own product document.

Install spacers at walls, columns, pipes and other vertical surfaces. Continue the required gap at door casings or undercut the casing so the plank can move without being forced tight. Do not cover a movement gap with a fastener that locks the floor in place.

Lay the planks

  1. Install the approved underlayment over the prepared substrate, following the specified seam and vapor-control treatment.
  2. Choose a starting wall that permits a straight first course and the required perimeter gap. Dry-lay enough boards to check the final-row width and doorway transitions.
  3. Lock the first course using the manufacturer’s angle, drop or fold method. Never hammer directly on the tongue or locking edge.
  4. Stagger end joints by the distance specified for the collection. Use a tapping block only where the guide permits it and close resistant joints with the correct pull bar or pry bar.
  5. Continue across the room, checking that each row remains straight and that no debris is trapped beneath a joint.
  6. Cut the final row and around pipes while preserving the perimeter allowance. Fit transition profiles where the guide requires a break or movement joint.
  7. Remove temporary spacers only when the installation instructions allow, then install baseboards or quarter-round so trim covers the gap without fastening through the cork.

iCork’s floating-floor guide describes a floating floor as “a floor that is not anchored to the subfloor – nor anchored underneath kitchen cabinets.” That statement is a supplier instruction for its system, not a universal building standard. Do not glue a standard floating floor unless its own guide expressly allows it, and do not pin it with cabinet fasteners or other fixed loads where prohibited.

Glue-down cork tile installation

Prepare the bonding surface

Tile demands a smooth, sound, contaminant-free substrate. Follow the selected guide for patching, sanding, primer, moisture testing, alkalinity and vapor control. The iCork/Forna tile instructions warn against installing over old flooring or unapproved subfloors and address concrete moisture, alkalinity and grade concerns. Those restrictions apply to that adhesive system; another tile may specify different limits.

Use the named adhesive and application method

In the iCork/Forna example, the guide names Wakol D3540 roll-on contact cement and explicitly says to apply it with a roller rather than a trowel. That is not a rule for every cork tile. If your guide specifies another adhesive, spread rate, open time or applicator, follow it exactly; a generic substitute can prevent bonding and void the warranty.

Set out, bond and roll the tiles

  1. Establish perpendicular control lines from the room’s visual center or the layout point specified by the manufacturer. Dry-lay tiles to avoid narrow slivers at walls and to balance natural shade variation.
  2. Cut perimeter and obstacle pieces accurately with the tool recommended for the tile thickness.
  3. Apply the approved adhesive to the specified surface using the named roller, applicator or trowel. Respect its flash or open time; do not place tile into wet adhesive when the system requires contact-dry bonding.
  4. Place tiles along the control lines, keeping joints tight and aligned. Avoid sliding a tile after contact if the adhesive system is designed as a contact bond.
  5. Press the field and edges with the specified hand or weighted roller. A heavy floor roller is listed among the tools for some tile systems; use it only when the guide calls for that pressure.
  6. Protect the installation during the adhesive’s cure period. Keep traffic, moisture and furniture off it for the time stated by the adhesive and tile instructions.

Do not assume a bonded floor needs the same perimeter gap as a floating floor. The tile guide controls edge treatment, movement provisions and expansion details.

Finish, cure and protect the completed floor

Cork does not have one universal sealer schedule. The iCork/Forna instructions prescribe polyurethane steps for the products they cover, while AmCork identifies particular finishes in its warranty conditions. Follow the selected system for surface preparation, number of coats, recoat window, cure time and return-to-service timing.

  • Do not apply a finish that is incompatible with the factory coating or adhesive.
  • Keep dust, water and traffic away during the stated cure period, even if the surface feels dry.
  • Install trim and appliances without trapping a floating floor or puncturing its movement zone.
  • Use the maintenance and moisture-protection procedures supplied with the exact product.

Warranty coverage is manufacturer-specific. AmCork’s cited guide states that its floating installations are not covered by its warranty; that exclusion cannot be applied to every cork brand, nor can another supplier’s warranty be assumed to cover your installation.

Troubleshooting before and after installation

Planks will not lock or joints open

  • Check for debris, a damaged locking edge or an out-of-square first row.
  • Confirm that the tapping block and pull bar match the profile; never force a joint with direct hammer blows.
  • Disassemble and correct the row rather than leaving a stressed joint that may separate later.

The floor feels tight at a wall or doorway

  • Measure the actual gap against the product’s requirement; Forna and AmCork provide different examples.
  • Look for a cabinet fastener, threshold or casing that is pinning the floating floor.
  • Correct the obstruction before installing trim.

Tiles release or show hollow spots

  • Stop and check substrate cleanliness, moisture, alkalinity, grade and adhesive compatibility.
  • Verify that the specified adhesive was used with the specified roller or applicator and open time.
  • Do not patch a failed bond with a different adhesive without written product guidance.

Shade changes are conspicuous

Natural cork variation is expected, but cartons should be blended during layout. If the concern was visible before installation, pause and resolve it with the supplier; do not rely on finish to make mismatched material uniform.
