Panel widths, post spacing, footing requirements and slope limits vary, so do not transfer measurements from one model to another.
What to check before you dig
Mark the proposed fence line and gate location, and make sure the fence will sit on the intended property. Check your deed for easements and confirm any zoning, neighborhood or permit restrictions. Ask your local building inspector about footing requirements before excavation.
Have underground utilities located before digging. In the United States, Lowe’s directs homeowners to call 811; elsewhere, contact the local utility-location service. The rules and process depend on where you live.
Gather tools and materials
Depending on the fence and installation method, useful tools include a tape measure, stakes, string line, level, mallet and post-hole digger or auger. Concrete mix is appropriate only when required by the selected installation method and local footing rules. Confirm the materials and hardware against the product instructions before starting.

Choose the fence system before setting post locations
Decide whether you want a traditional fence assembled from individual rails and pickets or a modular or preassembled kit. A white vinyl picket fence kit can provide coordinated components and product-specific instructions, but its included parts and dimensions depend on the model. For example, Shoreline lists a white Cambridge ornamental picket fence in multiple heights and panel widths, with rail options that include an aluminum-reinforced bottom rail. WamBam’s Nantucket documentation describes an example four-foot-by-six-foot kit containing a post, rails, pickets, brackets, screws and a steel pipe anchor. Check the selected product’s current specifications for the actual configuration.
Once you have chosen a system, lay out post positions using its panel width and instructions. Do not assume a post-spacing measurement applies to another kit: one WamBam guide, for example, specifies a 70 3/8-inch spacing-guide dimension for its pipe anchors, but that figure is for that guide and system only.

Set the posts and establish the fence line
- Mark the post positions for the selected system, including gate posts, and run a string line to establish the fence alignment.
- Dig holes according to the product instructions and local footing requirements. Keep each post plumb and aligned as you set it.
- Secure the posts using the specified method, then recheck their alignment and height before proceeding.
Footing dimensions are not universal. For one Bufftech traditional picket system, the manual describes holes 30 inches deep or to the frost line, with approximate hole diameter dependent on post size, and concrete around the posts. These are instructions for that system, not general engineering guidance. Follow the latest manual for your fence and ask the local inspector about applicable footing rules.
Attach rails and install the pickets
For a traditional system, attach the stringers or rails after the posts are set, then fasten the pickets. Keep the rails level and use a spacer or the system’s spacing guide to make the gaps consistent. Bufftech’s manual advises checking that picket spacing is even at the ends of the rail.

Fastening details also vary by system. Nature’s Composites’ guide specifies two composite screws per rail per picket and at least 1/8 inch between the picket and post. Follow that guide only when installing the product it covers. A modular vinyl system may instead use brackets, routed rails, included screws and a spacing template; use its supplied hardware and assembly sequence rather than substituting fasteners or changing the steps without manufacturer direction.
Plan how the fence will follow a slope
Choose whether the fence will follow the ground or use stepped panels before setting posts. A wood-fence guide describes using a string or a bottom-spacer method depending on how much the slope changes. For modular panels, check the selected model’s limits: WamBam says steep or uneven yards may call for stair-stepping and trimming posts, while its Newport product page says that model cannot accommodate slopes exceeding 5–6 inches per panel. That limit applies to Newport, not to picket fences generally.

Install the gate and inspect the finished fence
Use instructions for a matching gate and make sure its posts can support the hardware. Bufftech’s manual identifies the hinge and latch posts as critical to gate function and provides model-specific hardware and reinforcement steps. After assembly, check that posts remain plumb, rails are level, pickets are evenly spaced, and the gate swings and latches without binding.
Mid-America Vinyl’s open-picket installation instructions describe their guidance as suggestions and state: “Builder is solely responsible for determining best methods based on individual project and site conditions.” That is a useful reminder to account for the chosen product, site and local requirements rather than treating a generic installation detail as universal.
