When trees, buildings, terrain or reflective surfaces compromise GNSS reception, first improve the antenna’s sky view and choose a better observation time. For RTK, confirm initialization and correction-link continuity, then reobserve important points and check them against trusted control. If the site still cannot support the required accuracy, use longer static observations for post-processing or switch to a total station where line of sight and survey control are available. A receiver’s displayed precision—or a “fixed” status by itself—is not proof that a coordinate is accurate.
Why poor reception affects survey accuracy
Two problems often occur together, but they are not the same. Signal blockage reduces the satellites the antenna can track. Multipath occurs when a satellite signal reflects off a nearby surface before reaching the antenna, taking a longer path and potentially biasing the position. A receiver can show a substantial satellite count and still be affected by reflected signals. Multipath can also contribute to an incorrect RTK ambiguity fix and may not be obvious during a short occupation. NOAA’s single-base real-time GNSS guidelines describe these risks and recommend redundant observations.

Trimble’s technical guidance gives an approximate 1 to 5 cm range for multipath errors in phase measurements and RTK. That is a vendor estimate for the described error source—not a prediction of total survey error or a guarantee for a particular canopy, street or receiver. Other error sources and site conditions also affect the final coordinate. See Trimble’s RTK accuracy factors.

What to do before occupying a point
Choose the best available location and time
- Use GNSS planning software to check satellite visibility for the site and schedule work during a more favorable window where possible. Satellite availability changes over the day; planning improves the opportunity for a usable observation but cannot remove an obstruction.
- Choose the clearest sky view available. If the point can be moved without compromising the survey, avoid deep cuttings and locations close to buildings, vehicles, towers, metal objects, signs or large water bodies. NOAA NGS identifies these, along with canopy, as potential multipath sources in its single-base RTK guidelines.
- Raise the antenna as practical to improve its view of the sky and reduce the influence of nearby reflecting surfaces. Follow the antenna and pole setup guidance for the equipment in use; raising it does not make a severely obstructed site suitable.
- Check for nearby radio interference. Trimble warns that directed radio or radar emissions can seriously degrade tracking. Its RTK factors guidance discusses interference and other conditions that affect RTK.
Choose a suitable base or control setup
Do not place an RTK base at a poor-reception location simply because it is convenient. NOAA NGS identifies nearby obstructions and reflective objects as possible multipath sources. A well-sited base cannot eliminate poor rover conditions, but poor conditions at the base can compromise the observations used by the RTK solution. Where the equipment and setup allow, Trimble notes that a ground-plane antenna may help reduce multipath at a suitable base location.

How to collect and check RTK observations
Verify the solution before accepting a point
- Wait for initialization. Do not treat a position as centimeter-level until the rover has initialized and the solution state is appropriate for the work. Trimble’s guidance for the SPS985/SPS986 and SPS Modular specifies at least five satellites also tracked by the base for initialization, with the requirement changing for dual-constellation operation. This is equipment-specific guidance, not a universal threshold for every receiver.
- Confirm common tracking and corrections continue. The rover and base need common tracked satellites, and the correction link must remain available. Trimble states that loss of satellite signals or the radio link results in loss of centimeter position accuracy. If the rover drops to float or autonomous operation, do not accept the point as though it retained a fixed-quality RTK solution. Consult the relevant Trimble rover operation guidelines for the stated equipment.
- Reobserve critical points. Collect redundant observations, preferably at staggered times so satellite geometry differs. NOAA NGS recommends redundant observations because a short RTK occupation may not reveal multipath or an incorrect ambiguity resolution.
- Check against trusted control. Compare observations with a high-confidence local benchmark, following the project’s control and datum procedures. USGS guidance recommends benchmark checks during real-time and post-processed surveys; see its survey-grade GNSS methods and guidelines.
- Review the field record. Record the antenna model, antenna height, occupation time, solution state and relevant site conditions. These details help identify setup or metadata errors when results disagree.
Satellite counts and reported precision are not sufficient quality checks. The number tracked can differ from the number used in the solution because of factors such as base overlap, satellite health, elevation masks and tracking status. NOAA NGS also cautions that a receiver can display false precision despite a biased solution. Trimble explains the count distinction in its rover guidance.
When longer static observations and post-processing make sense
If the point can support a stationary antenna but RTK results are unreliable, raw static GNSS observations may be suitable for post-processing. Longer and independently repeated sessions give processing more data to resolve ambiguities and help mitigate multipath, but they do not guarantee a good result at a badly obstructed site.

Meet the relevant OPUS input requirements
For the U.S. NOAA National Geodetic Survey’s OPUS static service, the current documentation specifies dual-frequency GPS L1/L2 full-wavelength carrier-phase observables, a stationary antenna, and data durations from 15 minutes to 48 hours, along with specified observation intervals. Files shorter than two hours have additional observable requirements. OPUS static processing uses GPS observables even if a file also contains other GNSS observables. These are service input requirements, not an accuracy promise; check the current NOAA NGS OPUS documentation for the file and workflow details that apply to a submission.
Enter antenna information accurately and assess the result
- Select the correct antenna type and enter the antenna reference point height correctly. NOAA NGS warns that an incorrect antenna selection may cause a height error as large as 80 cm and a horizontal error up to 1 cm. Those are potential metadata-related errors, not typical receiver performance.
- Observe longer where practical and make an independent repeat, ideally changing the time, observer or equipment when feasible. Compare the solutions rather than relying on one occupation.
- Review processing diagnostics. NOAA NGS describes strong OPUS solutions as having more than 90% of observations used and more than 50% of ambiguities fixed, along with other processing-specific indicators. These thresholds are diagnostic context, not a substitute for checking against project control.
- Interpret the result in context. NOAA NGS says most OPUS positions can be computed within a few centimeters under normal conditions, while warning that local multipath, adverse atmosphere and user errors can degrade a specific solution. Its guidance also says OPUS-RS may perform poorly or fail during high ionospheric disturbance or a strong weather front.
OPUS is a U.S. National Spatial Reference System service. Its input requirements, processing options and datum workflow may not apply to surveys governed by another country’s control system.

When to use a total station instead
If blockage or multipath prevents GNSS observations and checks from meeting the project tolerance, change methods rather than treating repeated poor GNSS fixes as acceptable. A total station can establish coordinates tied to a benchmark without relying on satellite reception at the point, provided there is a usable line of sight, suitable control and an appropriate survey procedure. The USGS has published a total-station setup procedure describing accurate x, y and z data tied to a permanent benchmark. It is a procedure example using a Trimble S6 robotic total station and TSC3 data collector, not a requirement to use those models.
Which method fits the site?
| Method | Strength | Main dependency or limitation | Useful quality check |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTK GNSS | Provides efficient real-time positions when conditions and corrections support a reliable solution. | Requires initialization, common satellite tracking and a continuing correction link; multipath can bias results. | Repeat observations with changed satellite geometry and check against trusted benchmarks. |
| Static GNSS with post-processing | Longer occupations and processing can give more opportunity to resolve ambiguities and mitigate multipath. | Requires a stationary antenna, suitable raw observations, correct antenna metadata and an appropriate processing service. | Review solution diagnostics, make an independent repeat and compare with control. |
| Total station | Does not rely on satellite reception at the surveyed point. | Requires line of sight, an instrument setup and suitable survey control. | Tie measurements to a permanent benchmark and follow project procedures. |
This is a workflow comparison, not a guaranteed ranking. The required tolerance, site geometry, available control, equipment and applicable project or jurisdictional standards determine the appropriate method. The USGS GNSS guidance, NOAA NGS OPUS documentation and USGS total-station procedure describe different workflows and should be applied within their stated contexts.

What improved reception can—and cannot—prove
Planning, antenna placement, longer occupations and repeated checks can improve the chance of obtaining useful observations. They cannot guarantee that a point under dense canopy or beside reflective structures will meet a specified tolerance. No single improvement figure applies across obstructed environments: site conditions, equipment, survey method and quality checks differ. Trimble reported a 2024 comparison of ProPoint against a previous-generation RTK engine across selected challenging conditions, but that vendor-reported result is not a universal performance claim for all receivers or sites. Use the project’s required accuracy and independent control checks to decide whether the coordinate is fit for purpose.
