Start by checking the inside edge of the window frame for a label, then use its color and code to choose the right official directory. If there is no label, glass etchings and spacer markings may offer clues—but they do not always identify the company that made the complete window.
Where to look for a window label
Open the sash carefully if needed to see the channels and inside edges. Do not force painted or stuck parts. FGIA’s homeowner FAQ advises: “Look for the AAMA label on the inside edge of the frame.” Also check the side jambs, head, and sill.
NFRC says: “The permanent label can be found along the side jambs, at the top on the header, at the bottom on the sill, or between the panes of glass on the spacer of the product.” [NFRC label guidance]
Use the label color and code to choose a lookup
Labels from different programs point to different directories. Identify the label type before searching rather than guessing from the window’s appearance.

- Gold AAMA label: FGIA says the manufacturer code is near the bottom center and typically has two or three letters, a dash, and a number. Search that code in the AAMA Certified Products Directory.
- Silver NFRC label: Look for a CPD number or other identifying details and search the NFRC Certified Products Directory. The directory allows searches by manufacturer and product type, with optional product and performance filters. [NFRC label guidance]
- White manufactured-housing label: FGIA directs homeowners to the AAMA directory for this label type.
A directory listing is a lead, not proof that a specific installed window was certified. FGIA notes that a listed product is certified only when the manufacturer has applied the AAMA label. [FGIA homeowner FAQ]
Check the glass and spacer for additional clues
Look at the corners of the glass for an etched logo or serial number. The spacer—the narrow strip between panes—may also have letters, numbers, or a date. These marks can identify the glass unit, series, plant, or production run rather than the company that made the whole window.

JELD-WEN says its products may use glass etchings or spacer codes and recommends contacting service support for identification. Treat any mark as a clue to confirm, not as a definitive manufacturer name. [JELD-WEN installation instructions]
What to do if you cannot identify the maker
- Document the window: Photograph the full unit, any label, glass etching, spacer markings, hardware, and frame profile.
- Record useful details: Write down every code, approximate dimensions, window style, and frame material.
- Contact a likely manufacturer: Send the photos and details to its service representative and ask whether it can identify the product.
- Ask a local window or glass service provider: If the maker remains unknown or you need parts, ask for an inspection rather than ordering components based on appearance alone.
A failed directory search does not prove that the window has no manufacturer. FGIA cautions that a manufacturer may have left the program or directory information may be outdated. [FGIA homeowner FAQ]

What a missing NFRC sticker means
NFRC is a third-party certification and labeling program, not a window manufacturer or repair service. Its FAQ says a product without its sticker is not considered NFRC-certified for the program. That does not establish that the window lacks a manufacturer; continue with frame, glass, and spacer clues or seek service help. [NFRC FAQ]
