How to Identify and Get Rid of Drain Flies

The reliable way to get rid of drain flies is to remove the wet, slimy organic buildup where they breed. Spraying the tiny adults may reduce what you see for a day or two, but it will not solve the infestation if larvae remain in a drain, trap, overflow channel, floor drain, garbage-disposal splash guard, or concealed plumbing leak.

Drain flies are usually easy to recognize: they are tiny, dark, fuzzy, moth-like insects that fly weakly and often rest on bathroom walls, sinks, windows, or nearby surfaces. This guide explains how to confirm the identification, locate the active breeding site, clean it properly, prevent a recurrence, and know when the problem points to a plumbing or sewer defect.

What drain flies look like

Adult drain flies—also called moth flies or filter flies—are generally about 1/10 to 1/8 inch long. They are dark gray to dark-colored and covered with fine hairs, which gives them a fuzzy appearance. Their wings are commonly held roof-like over the body when they rest.

Unlike many other small flies, drain flies are weak fliers. You may see them sitting on a bathroom wall, around a sink, beside a shower, or on a nearby window rather than rapidly darting through the room.

They generally do not bite people or pets and are primarily a nuisance. However, because they can develop in sewage or contaminated wet organic material, they may mechanically transfer microorganisms. That possibility is not the same as saying ordinary household drain flies routinely cause disease. People with sensitivities may also experience allergy-related irritation.

Drain flies, fruit flies, or phorid flies?

Correct identification matters because a trap or pesticide intended for one kind of fly may not be appropriate for another. Use appearance and behavior as clues, not as a substitute for professional identification when the source is persistent or unusual.

Fly Typical appearance Common source Useful clue
Drain fly Fuzzy, hairy, moth-like, usually dark; wings held roof-like Slime and decomposing organic matter in drains, traps, overflows, or wastewater areas Weak flight; often rests on walls near plumbing
Fruit fly Smoother-looking, often tan or brown; frequently has noticeable red eyes Fermenting fruit, vegetables, rubbish, garbage disposals, and food residue Vinegar traps are more relevant to fruit flies than to confirmed drain flies
Phorid fly Small and not distinctly fuzzy or moth-like Drains, decaying material, leaks, and other concealed organic sources May run across a surface more than it flies; identification can require an expert

Do not assume that a product marketed for “drain flies” is labeled for every species. Some products are labeled for fruit flies or phorid flies but not moth flies. The current pesticide label—not the product title or an online description—determines the permitted pest, location, and method of use.

Step 1: Find the drain or wet source producing the flies

The drain closest to the adult flies is not necessarily the breeding site. Check every plausible source, especially if the insects appear in more than one room.

  • Bathroom sink drains and overflow openings
  • Shower and bathtub drains
  • Floor drains, including rarely used basement or utility-room drains
  • Utility sinks and laundry-room fixtures
  • Garbage disposals, including the underside of the splash guard
  • Condensate drains, sump areas, and drain pans
  • Wet crawlspaces, leaking pipes, failed caulking, or damp areas below fixtures
  • Concealed wastewater or sewer-line defects beneath a floor or slab

Use a temporary tape or container test

  1. Dry the area around a suspect drain.
  2. Place clear tape over the drain opening with the sticky side facing down, or cover it with a clear container or inverted jar. Do not permanently seal or obstruct a drain that may need to carry water.
  3. For sinks and tubs, check the overflow opening as well as the main drain. A breeding site can be inside the overflow passage.
  4. Leave the covering in place temporarily and inspect it later or the next morning for flies emerging from the opening or caught on the tape.
  5. In a home with several possible sources, test one drain at a time and label each test so the results are not confused.

If flies appear under the covering, that is strong evidence that the drain or connected passage is active. If no flies appear, test the next drain rather than concluding that there is no hidden source. Keep the test temporary, particularly in a fixture where an overflow or backup could cause water damage.

  • Occasional use of this gel treatment will keep your drains odor and scum free; By preventing the buildup of organic scum, you eliminate the risk of another problem

Step 2: Remove the breeding film, not just the adult flies

Drain-fly larvae develop in the gelatinous film that coats the inside of drains, traps, overflow passages, and other wet areas containing decomposing organic material. The central treatment is physical removal of that film.

  1. Make the area safe. Wear gloves, protect nearby surfaces, ventilate the room, and remove exposed toiletries, food, children, and pets from the work area.
  2. Remove the drain cover or stopper if it can be done safely and without damaging the fixture. If the cover is difficult to remove or the plumbing is unfamiliar, ask building maintenance or a plumber rather than forcing it.
  3. Scrub the accessible surfaces. Use a stiff-bristled drain brush to reach the inside walls of the drain. Scrub the underside of the cover, the stopper, the overflow passage where accessible, and the accessible portion of the trap.
  4. Lift out hair and sludge. Remove the debris instead of pushing it farther into the plumbing. Bag contaminated solid material and clean the tools afterward.
  5. Clean the trap only when appropriate. A removable trap can hold substantial organic buildup, but disassembly may cause leaks or be unsuitable for some fixtures. Do not remove plumbing components you cannot reinstall securely.
  6. Rinse and recheck. Flush the fixture according to its normal use and repeat the inspection later. A single quick rinse is not a substitute for scrubbing the film from the pipe walls.

For this job, a stiff drain brush or a long-handled drain cleaning brush can help reach the slime coating inside an accessible drain. Choose a tool that fits the drain and do not force it into an inaccessible branch line or use it in a way that could damage plumbing.

Optional biological or enzyme products

A biological or enzyme product may help break down remaining organic buildup after brushing. It is an adjunct, not a replacement for mechanical cleaning or plumbing repair. Before using one, read the current label for the target pest, approved site, dilution, contact time, ventilation requirements, and compatibility with the fixture or piping.

If the drain is the confirmed source and you want an optional maintenance product, look for an enzyme drain cleaner for drain flies only after confirming that its label supports the intended use. Do not assume that every enzyme product kills drain flies, eliminates larvae, or is suitable for every plumbing system.

What does not reliably solve drain flies

  • Boiling water: Hot water may disturb or kill some exposed organisms, but it is not dependable long-term source control. Extension guidance specifically identifies boiling water as ineffective for lasting control.
  • Bleach: Bleach is not a reliable way to remove the organic film and introduces unnecessary exposure and mixing hazards.
  • Ordinary chemical drain cleaners: These products are not dependable drain-fly treatments. They can damage plumbing, injure skin or eyes, create hazardous fumes, and complicate later cleaning.
  • Aerosol insecticide alone: Spraying visible adults may provide temporary relief, but it does not remove eggs, larvae, or the breeding material.
  • Vinegar traps: Vinegar-based traps are more useful for fruit flies. They should not be treated as the standard cure for a confirmed drain-fly infestation.

Never mix bleach with acids, ammonia, or drain-cleaning chemicals. Never pour a pesticide into a drain unless the product is specifically registered and labeled for that use. For any pesticide, follow the current label exactly, including restrictions on occupants, food, pets, ventilation, application site, and disposal.

Green Gobbler Fruit Fly Killer | 1 Galllon
  • KILL FRUIT, DRAIN & SEWER FLIES: Get rid of the fly infestation and get back to enjoying your space. Green Gobbler's thick gel formula clings to pipes to eliminate annoying drain fly infestations. It kills fruit flies, drain flies and sewer flies.

Step 3: Reduce adults while the source is being corrected

Adult-control measures are secondary. They can make the room more comfortable and help show whether numbers are falling, but they cannot replace source removal.

Sticky flypaper or glue traps can monitor and reduce adults near an affected area. Place them where children and pets cannot reach them, and keep them away from food, clothing, and surfaces where people may brush against them. A product such as sticky traps for small flies is best treated as a temporary monitoring aid, not as proof that the breeding site has been eliminated.

An indoor flying-insect aerosol should be used only if its current label includes the target pest and the intended indoor location. Protect food, occupants, children, and pets exactly as directed. In most household situations, cleaning the source is preferable to repeated indoor spraying.

Step 4: Prevent the infestation from returning

After cleaning, correct the conditions that produced the buildup. Otherwise, a newly cleaned drain can become suitable for breeding again.

  • Remove hair, grease, food residue, and standing sludge from drains and traps.
  • Clean garbage-disposal splash guards and the channels beneath them.
  • Clean sink and tub overflow passages where accessible.
  • Repair leaking supply or waste pipes, condensation problems, failed caulking, and drainage defects.
  • Investigate damp cabinets, wall cavities, crawlspaces, and flooring near plumbing fixtures.
  • Use seldom-used drains periodically so their traps retain water. If a trap repeatedly dries out or sewer gas is noticeable, investigate the cause rather than simply adding more insecticide.
  • Keep floor drains and utility-room fixtures free of organic debris.

A dry trap can allow odors and insects from a drainage system to enter, while recurring moisture around a fixture can support breeding outside the visible drain. Both conditions deserve plumbing attention.

How long will it take to get rid of drain flies?

Adult numbers should begin to decline after the breeding material is removed, but existing adults may continue to appear while the remaining life cycle finishes. Under favorable conditions, larvae may mature in roughly two weeks before pupating; the complete life cycle can take approximately five to six weeks. Temperature, moisture, species, and available food all affect these figures.

Do not treat a fixed number of fly-free days as proof of success. Continue monitoring for several weeks:

  • Repeat the tape or clear-container test on the suspected drain.
  • Inspect other drains if adults remain present.
  • Clean again if flies still emerge from the same opening.
  • Check the trap, overflow, branch line, or nearby wet structure if the visible drain looks clean.

If flies emerge from several drains at once, suspect a shared branch line, sewer connection, or another wet organic source rather than assuming every fixture independently became infested.

When to call a plumber or pest professional

Home cleaning is reasonable when the source is accessible and there are no plumbing symptoms. Escalate when the evidence points to a concealed or shared source.

Consider when to call a plumber for drain flies if you notice:

  • Sewage odor, recurring backups, gurgling, or slow drainage
  • Water damage, damp flooring, or a persistently wet wall or cabinet
  • Flies emerging from a wall, slab, crawlspace, ceiling, or inaccessible floor drain
  • Continued emergence after thorough cleaning of accessible drains and overflows
  • A suspected cracked, leaking, or disconnected sewer line
  • A trap or branch line that cannot be safely inspected or cleaned

A licensed plumber may need to inspect or clean a trap, branch line, sewer connection, or concealed leak. Do not repeatedly pour chemicals into a drain when the underlying problem may be a broken pipe.

In a commercial kitchen, restaurant, multifamily building, care setting, or other shared facility, coordinate with building management and use a documented integrated pest-management plan. A licensed pest-management provider can help identify species and concealed sources when cleaning and plumbing correction alone have not resolved the problem. The objective should be source correction and label-compliant treatment—not routine indiscriminate spraying.

For persistent or inaccessible infestations, professional drain-fly control may be appropriate, particularly where wastewater systems are shared or the source cannot be reached safely. Verify licensing and ensure that any pesticide treatment is legal for the intended user, site, and pest.

A practical drain-fly checklist

  1. Confirm that the insects are fuzzy, moth-like, weak-flying drain flies rather than fruit flies or phorid flies.
  2. Test sink, shower, tub, floor, utility, disposal, overflow, condensate, and seldom-used drains individually.
  3. Inspect for damp organic material outside the drain, including leaks and sewer-related moisture.
  4. Remove the cover and physically scrub the drain, cover, overflow, and accessible trap with a stiff brush.
  5. Use an enzyme or biological product only as a label-compliant adjunct.
  6. Use glue traps only to monitor or reduce adults while the source is being corrected.
  7. Avoid relying on boiling water, bleach, ordinary drain cleaner, vinegar traps, or aerosol spray as the cure.
  8. Repeat testing and inspection for several weeks.
  9. Call a plumber or qualified pest professional for plumbing symptoms, concealed sources, shared systems, or persistent emergence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are drain flies dangerous?

They generally do not bite people or pets and are usually a nuisance. Because they can breed in sewage or contaminated wet organic material, they may mechanically transfer microorganisms, but that does not mean ordinary household drain flies routinely cause disease. Persistent infestations should still be corrected, especially in food-service, care, and shared facilities.

Will bleach or boiling water kill drain flies?

They are not dependable long-term solutions because they do not reliably remove the gelatinous organic film where eggs and larvae develop. Scrubbing the source and correcting moisture or plumbing problems are more effective. Never mix bleach with acids, ammonia, or drain chemicals.

Why do drain flies keep coming back after I clean the sink?

The active source may be a shower or floor drain, overflow passage, garbage-disposal splash guard, trap, shared branch line, concealed leak, or sewer defect. Test drains separately and investigate hidden wet sources if flies continue emerging.

How long does it take to eliminate drain flies?

Adults may continue appearing while the existing life cycle finishes. Larvae can mature in about two weeks under favorable conditions, while the complete life cycle may take five to six weeks. Conditions vary, so continue testing and monitoring rather than relying on a guaranteed timeline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use a vinegar trap for drain flies?

Usually no. Vinegar traps are more relevant to fruit flies, which are a different pest. A confirmed drain-fly infestation requires locating and removing the wet organic breeding material.

The Bottom Line

Drain flies disappear when their breeding source disappears. Test drains separately, scrub away the slime and debris, correct leaks or other moisture problems, and monitor for several weeks. If flies persist after accessible sources are clean—or if there is sewage odor, slow drainage, water damage, or evidence of concealed plumbing—investigate the plumbing rather than repeatedly spraying the adults.
