5 Easy DIY Bird Feeders for Supplemental Winter Food

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Winter can hide seeds and berries beneath snow and ice, making supplemental food useful for visiting birds—but a feeder is not a substitute for natural habitat, and birds do not depend on one feeder for survival. These five projects turn pinecones, citrus peels, cartons, popcorn, and other inexpensive materials into short-term feeders. The pinecone suet feeder is the quickest high-energy option; the recycled carton is the most practical seed holder; and the citrus, garland, and gelatin designs work best as temporary edible feeders.

Before you begin: temporary or reusable?

Most of these designs are intended for a few days or a short spell of winter weather, not for year-round use. Citrus halves, popcorn garlands, pinecones coated with fat, and gelatin seed cookies should be removed when they become wet, moldy, stale, empty, or otherwise spoiled. A paper milk or juice carton should be discarded before the paperboard turns soft or contaminated.

If you want a feeder that can be cleaned and refilled repeatedly, choose a purpose-built hopper, tray, tube, or suet feeder instead. A good reusable feeder should keep seed reasonably dry, withstand weather, and be easy to clean. Disclosure: This article may contain recommendations for products readers can choose to purchase; the DIY versions themselves can usually be made from household materials.

1. Pinecone suet-and-seed feeder

Best for: the easiest high-energy winter feeder.

A pinecone gives you a naturally ridged surface that holds a coating of fat and seed. Suet and other high-fat foods provide concentrated energy in cold weather and may attract woodpeckers, nuthatches, chickadees, titmice, and related species. Squirrels may find it appealing too, so regard placement as a deterrent—not a guarantee of squirrel exclusion.

  • Wide Application: seed cake feeders are suitable for climbing and perching birds, making them the ideal filler for your outdoor garden, or as a gift for family or friends

Materials

  • One large, reasonably clean pinecone
  • String, sturdy twine, or a pipe cleaner for hanging
  • Peanut butter, vegetable shortening, or another suitable fat
  • Birdseed, preferably small seed that can lodge between the scales

How to make it

  1. Brush away loose dirt, needles, and debris. Do not use a pinecone that is damp, moldy, or contaminated with chemicals.
  2. Secure the hanging loop around the narrow top of the pinecone before adding the coating. Tie it firmly enough to support the finished feeder.
  3. Spread peanut butter or vegetable shortening over the scales. Press it into the crevices rather than applying one thick, slippery layer.
  4. Roll the coated pinecone in seed, then gently press additional seed into any bare spots.
  5. Hang it from a branch, pole, or hook where birds have nearby cover and predators cannot easily approach unseen.

Black-oil sunflower seed, a small mixed seed, or another seed that adheres well can work. If peanut allergies are a concern in your household or community, use vegetable shortening or a suitable suet mixture instead of peanut butter.

2. Citrus-half seed feeder

Best for: a quick, biodegradable bowl and a family activity.

An emptied orange or grapefruit half becomes a small open tray. It is simple to make, but the fruit shell deteriorates in wet weather, so treat it as a temporary feeder rather than a durable container.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Materials

  • One emptied orange or grapefruit half
  • Birdseed
  • Three pieces of string or yarn of similar length

How to make it

  1. Scoop out the fruit, leaving the peel intact. Let the shell drain and dry briefly if it is very wet.
  2. Make three evenly spaced holes near the rim. Keep them far enough from the edge that the peel will not tear under the feeder’s weight.
  3. Thread one string through each hole and knot the strings securely.
  4. Gather the three strings above the bowl and tie them into a stable hanging point.
  5. Fill the citrus bowl with sunflower seed or a quality seed mix and hang it from a branch.

Hang homemade feeders separately rather than clustering several in one tight area. Spacing reduces crowding and makes it easier to notice spoiled food or a sanitation problem. Remove the citrus feeder as soon as the peel becomes soft, moldy, heavily soiled, or structurally weak.

3. Recycled milk- or juice-carton hopper

Best for: holding more seed with some protection from precipitation.

A clean, dry carton encloses more of the seed than an open citrus bowl or garland. It is still a temporary project: paperboard does not tolerate repeated wetting, and a soggy carton can collapse or contaminate the food.

Materials

  • One clean, completely dry paper milk or juice carton
  • Sturdy string or cord
  • Birdseed
  • Scissors or a craft knife, used by an adult or under close supervision

How to make it

  1. Rinse the carton thoroughly and allow it to dry completely. Do not use one with a sour smell, residue, or visible mold.
  2. Cut one window into each of two opposite sides. Leave enough carton around the bottom and edges to retain the seed and keep the structure rigid.
  3. Do not cut openings into all four sides; removing too much material can weaken the carton.
  4. Pierce the top and thread a strong hanging cord through it. Tie the cord securely, checking that the carton hangs level.
  5. Add seed to the bottom, but do not pack it so high that it blocks the openings.

Keep the carton as plain as possible. Avoid loose decorative materials, markers, tape, or glue that could shed into the food or create a hazard. Inspect the carton after rain or snow and discard it before the paperboard becomes soggy.

4. Cranberry-and-popcorn garland

Best for: a decorative evergreen feeder with minimal construction.

This edible garland can be draped across an evergreen or sturdy branch, adding food and visual interest to a winter tree. It is a supplemental snack, not a complete bird diet.

Materials

  • Plain cooked popcorn, with no butter, salt, sugar, or seasoning
  • Fresh cranberries
  • Needle and thread
  • Optional: grains, unsalted nuts, or fresh or dried fruit suitable for birds

How to make it

  1. Cut a manageable length of strong thread and secure one end with a large knot.
  2. Thread popcorn and cranberries in alternating or repeating sections. Leave enough spacing that the strand is not excessively heavy.
  3. Tie the far end securely and inspect the strand for loose thread or sharp exposed ends.
  4. Drape it over an evergreen or strong branch. You can also form it into a wreath using florist wire, provided no sharp wire ends are exposed.

Optional additions such as grains, unsalted nuts, or fruit can increase variety, but do not use salted, seasoned, sugary, or spoiled foods. Remove the garland when it becomes wet, moldy, stale, or begins to deteriorate. Do not leave deteriorating food outdoors merely because some remains uneaten.

Materials

  • 2 cups birdseed
  • 1 packet unflavored gelatin
  • 2 tablespoons cold water
  • 1/3 cup boiling water
  • Cookie cutters
  • String
  • A skewer
  • Nonstick cooking spray

How to make it

  1. Spray the cookie cutters lightly so the finished shapes release more easily.
  2. Soften the gelatin in the cold water for one minute.
  3. Add the boiling water and stir until the gelatin dissolves.
  4. Combine the gelatin mixture with the birdseed and mix until the seed is evenly coated.
  5. Pack the mixture firmly into the cookie cutters.
  6. Use the skewer to make a small hanging hole while the mixture is still workable.
  7. Allow the shapes to set fully before threading string through the hole and hanging them.

Make the shapes relatively small so they do not become excessively heavy as they absorb moisture. This design is most suitable for cool, dry weather. Take it down when it becomes wet, moldy, empty, or structurally damaged.

Choose food for the birds you want to attract

Black-oil sunflower seed is the simplest general-purpose choice. Its relatively high fat content and thin shell make it accessible to many small birds, and it typically attracts more species than a single specialized seed. It is a good starting point for the citrus feeder, carton hopper, and gelatin cookies.

Food Good fit Important note
Black-oil sunflower seed Most seed feeders A broadly useful starting food
Suet or a suitable rendered-fat mixture Pinecone feeder and suet-style feeders High energy, particularly useful in cold weather
Safflower Seed feeders Different species prefer different seeds; it is not universally best
Dry, unsalted peanuts Open feeders or fat-and-seed mixtures Use only fresh, unsalted nuts; avoid spoiled or wet food
Cracked corn or mixed seed Hoppers and trays Birds differ in diet and bill structure
Nyjer seed Appropriate specialized feeders It may spill from large openings and is not a universal substitute for sunflower
Fruit Garlands and suitable open feeders Remove it promptly when it spoils

There is no single food that is best for every species. Offering more than one food or feeder type can increase variety, but only if you can keep each feeder clean and remove spoiled material promptly.

Placement and maintenance checklist

  • Provide nearby cover without creating a hiding place for predators. Birds benefit from access to shrubs, trees, or other cover, but avoid forcing them into dense vegetation where cats or other predators can approach unseen.
  • Separate homemade feeders. Do not overcrowd one small area. Spacing reduces competition and crowding and may reduce disease-spread concerns.
  • Keep reusable feeders clean and dry. Remove old remnants, shake out compacted seed, wash the feeder as appropriate, and let it dry before refilling.
  • Inspect every temporary feeder often. Wet, moldy, stale, empty, or deteriorating food should be removed immediately.
  • Consider squirrels and other wildlife. Squirrels are persistent, and no DIY placement can honestly promise a squirrel-proof result. Hang feeders where access is more difficult and accept that some food may be shared.
  • Keep domestic poultry separate. If you keep chickens, ducks, or other poultry, prevent contact between wild birds and domestic birds. Keep poultry feed and water clean and protected, and monitor domestic birds for illness. Wild birds can carry pathogens even when they appear healthy.
  • Pair feeding with habitat. Native plants, natural cover, clean water, and seasonal food sources support birds more sustainably than seed alone. A feeder supplements habitat; it does not replace it.

Helpful supplies if household materials are not enough

For a temporary project, ordinary clean string and recycled containers are usually sufficient. If you want a longer-lasting setup, a reusable bird feeder, bird feeder hanging hook, or bird feeder cleaning brush may be more practical than rebuilding a carton every few days. A reusable feeder is especially useful when its tray or other parts can be emptied and cleaned easily.

Watch, identify, and learn

Keep a simple log beside a window: note the date, weather, feeder type, food, and birds you recognize. Do not assume every bird will appear immediately; local habitat, weather, predators, and natural food availability all affect visits. In the United States and Canada, Project FeederWatch counts birds during the November–April season, giving backyard observers a way to contribute structured observations.

Start with the pinecone if you want the fastest project, choose the carton if protecting seed from the elements matters most, and use the garland or gelatin cookies for a group activity. Whatever you make, the best feeder is one you can inspect, clean, and remove before it becomes a source of spoiled food.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are DIY bird feeders necessary for birds in winter?

No. Feeder birds generally have multiple natural food sources, and feeders do not replace native plants or habitat. Supplemental food can still be useful when natural foods are scarce or covered by snow and ice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often should a homemade bird feeder be replaced?

There is no fixed schedule because weather and construction quality vary. Inspect it frequently and remove it when it becomes wet, moldy, stale, empty, contaminated, or structurally weak. Paper cartons and citrus halves may need replacement quickly in rainy or snowy weather.

What is the best seed for a homemade feeder?

Black-oil sunflower seed is the simplest general-purpose choice because many species can open it and it is relatively high in fat. A mixed seed, suet, fruit, peanuts, or specialized seed may be appropriate depending on the feeder and the birds in your area.

How can I keep squirrels away from a DIY bird feeder?

Place the feeder where squirrels have more difficulty reaching it and avoid low, easily climbed locations. No homemade placement is reliably squirrel-proof, so expect that some squirrels may still reach the food.

Can I use a DIY feeder if I keep chickens?

Use extra caution. Keep wild birds away from domestic poultry, protect poultry feed and water, maintain good sanitation, and monitor your birds for illness. A wild-bird feeder should not be placed where it encourages contact with chickens or contaminates their food and water.

The Bottom Line

DIY feeders are most useful when they are simple, clean, and temporary. Use black-oil sunflower seed as a practical starting point, choose suet for a high-energy pinecone feeder, provide nearby but safe cover, and remove any homemade feeder as soon as food or materials begin to deteriorate. Supplemental feeding works best alongside native plants, natural cover, and clean water.
