To hide outdoor trash cans, first confirm where your municipality or homeowners association allows them, then choose a screen that fits your bins, leaves room to roll them out, and complements your home. A purpose-built enclosure, opaque privacy screen, solid-wall structure, or screening plants can all work; none is right for every property.

Start with placement and local rules

Before buying a bin shed or building a screen, check your local rules for permitted locations, visibility, height, materials, setbacks, sight lines, and permits. These requirements can differ between nearby jurisdictions and by property type.

  • Montréal: City guidance generally points to side and rear yards and says containers should be screened from streets and neighbouring properties in applicable cases. Borough requirements differ; the city mentions screening plants or an opaque fence for containers visible from public areas. See Montréal’s container guidance.
  • Wheat Ridge, Colorado: The city says a zoning permit is required and summarizes a six-foot enclosure requirement, location constraints, and permitted opaque materials including masonry, chain link with privacy slats, and cedar fencing. These are local rules, not a general height or material standard. Check Wheat Ridge’s guidance.
  • Spokane, Washington: Municipal code requires exterior garbage and recycling areas to be screened from streets and adjacent properties. It allows qualifying visual screening, a sight-obscuring fence, or a shed or garage that fully blocks the view, subject to clear-view requirements. Read Spokane Municipal Code 17C.111.330.
  • Chicago: The cited code section calls for six-foot masonry walls and an opaque, lockable gate for certain multi-unit, commercial, and manufacturing uses when the storage area is outside a building. It should not be treated as a rule for a typical single-family home. Review Chicago Municipal Code 17-11-0300.

These examples illustrate why there is no universal answer about permits, enclosure height, or acceptable materials. Check the rules that apply to your address and property type before committing to a design.

Choose a screening approach

Consider the available space, how often you use the bins, and how permanent you want the feature to be. Costs, durability, and performance depend on the specific product, materials, installation, and site; the approaches below are not a ranked comparison.

Approach What to consider
Ready-made enclosure or bin shed Confirm the number and dimensions of bins it holds, access for rolling them out, footprint, finish, and whether its placement is allowed.
Opaque fence or privacy screen Check opacity, maintenance, durability, appearance, height limits, and permit needs. Cedar fencing is one material permitted in Wheat Ridge’s local guidance.
Custom solid-wall enclosure Can create a more permanent, house-integrated feature. Check allowed materials, gate access, drainage, and whether permits or local engineering requirements apply.
Screening plants Offer a softer landscape treatment and can be combined with a fence. Account for the time plants need to fill in, mature size, climate, maintenance, and whether they block views year-round.

Design around the bins and everyday access

Measure before buying or building

Measure each bin, including its lid and handles, and allow space to move it in and out. Also check that the enclosure fits the intended location without obstructing a route or access point. The Big Canoe Property Owners Association’s 2026 residential drawing says to size the enclosure based on the cans; its design cues are not universal building requirements. See the Big Canoe residential enclosure drawing.

Make the opening convenient

Plan how the gate or lid opens and where it rests when you are moving bins. The Big Canoe drawing shows hinged access and a latch. A larger commercial service enclosure has different demands: Santa Ana’s standards depict durable gates and service clearances for that context, not a default household-bin plan. See Santa Ana’s service-enclosure standards.

Account for airflow and water

For a custom wood design, consider how air can circulate and water can drain. Big Canoe’s drawing includes ventilation gaps, sloped ground, and clearance below the bottom board as design details for its community. Treat them as useful cues to discuss for your site, not universal code requirements.

Coordinate the exterior finish

A screen can look like a planned part of the property rather than an afterthought when its materials and finish work with the house. Montréal’s guidance says screening should be in keeping with the exterior design under applicable rules; Wheat Ridge lists several locally permitted opaque materials. Choose a finish only after confirming what is allowed where you live.

Preserve sight lines and clearance

Keep the enclosure from blocking required views at driveways, streets, or other visibility-sensitive locations. Spokane’s screening code specifically refers to clear-view triangle requirements. Check your local rules and leave enough room for normal access to the bins and surrounding property.

Match the enclosure to your situation

  • For a simple, contained solution: Compare ready-made enclosures by measured bin fit, access, footprint, and finish.
  • For a flexible layout: An opaque fence or privacy screen can be adapted to the site, subject to local material and height rules.
  • For a permanent architectural feature: A custom solid-wall design may suit the home, but confirm permit, material, drainage, and access requirements first.
  • For a softer landscape look: Plants can screen bins, alone or alongside a fence, if their eventual size and seasonal coverage suit the location.

If the space is awkward, the finish needs to match the house closely, or local rules prescribe a particular approach, a local fence, carpentry, or landscape-screening professional can help translate those constraints into a workable layout.
