A road closure does not automatically mean your business is inaccessible. Customers may still be able to reach you, but the permitted approach, entrance, parking, or pedestrian route can change—or access may be delayed. Confirm the arrangements with the highway authority or project team, then give customers clear, current directions through the channels they already use.
First, confirm whether and how customers can reach you
Do not assume that a closure sign means every nearby business is cut off, and do not assume that access remains unchanged just because your premises are open. Road projects can maintain access while requiring customers to approach from one direction, wait briefly, or use a different pedestrian route. The arrangement depends on the work and the local authority.

Contact the highway authority, project team, or contractor responsible for the work. Ask for the current plan for your address, rather than relying on a general description of the closure. Suffolk County Council’s guidance, for example, warns that access during works can be delayed or limited to one side and directs businesses to raise concerns with the organization carrying out the work.

Questions to ask the project contact
- What are the confirmed start and end dates, and are there separate phases that could change access?
- Which streets or approaches can customers use from each direction? Is access restricted to one side?
- Can people walk or cycle to the business, and will they need to use a different entrance or crossing?
- Will customer parking, loading, deliveries, or drop-off arrangements change?
- Could there be short delays even when the business remains accessible?
- Who should you contact if the site conditions differ from the plan or a customer cannot get through?
- Does the project have a public closure page, a business notification list, or signs explaining that local businesses remain open?
Ask which details are confirmed and which are estimates. Record the contact’s name or team, the date you received the information, and the next date to check for changes. A confirmed route can become stale if work moves to a new phase; a tentative end date should not be presented to customers as a guarantee.

Be precise about what “access maintained” means for your customers. It may mean a vehicle can reach the street but needs to approach from one side, or that people on foot can use a different entrance. Ask separately about driving, walking, cycling, deliveries, and parking rather than treating them as one yes-or-no answer. If the project cannot confirm an item yet, leave it out of your directions and ask when to check again.
Write a notice customers can act on
Lead with the practical answer: whether you are open, and how a customer can reach you. Keep the wording plain and specific. A useful notice tells people what to do, not merely that “roadworks are happening nearby.”
Include the details that are confirmed
- Business status: Say that you are open only if that is true. If hours or services are affected, state the change.
- Timing: Give the closure period or phase dates only when they have been confirmed. If the project provides an estimate, label it as an estimate.
- Approach and entrance: Name the usable street, entrance, or approach direction. Add a recognizable landmark if it helps distinguish the route.
- Access conditions: Explain any confirmed pedestrian access, parking, loading, delivery, or short-wait changes that matter to customers.
- Help: Include a working business phone number so someone who is unsure can ask for directions.
- Current project information: Link to the responsible authority’s live closure or project page so customers can check for changes.
Leave out any route, date, parking instruction, or access assurance that the authority or project team has not confirmed. In particular, do not tell drivers to disregard a closure sign or use a road that is not officially permitted. If you cannot yet confirm access, say that you are checking with the project contact and tell customers where to look for your next update.

Make directions usable to someone who may not know the neighborhood. A named street, entrance, or recognizable landmark is more actionable than “come around the back.” If the route is complicated, explain the permitted approach in a short sequence rather than relying on a broad statement such as “access is still available.” Include only the steps you have confirmed, and link to the authority’s information for current road conditions.
Use one source of truth for your directions
Keep a current version of the notice on your website or another page you control. Use that wording as the reference when you post on social media, email customers, or send appointment and order updates. This makes it easier to revise every channel consistently when the route or work phase changes.
A simple reusable format is:
We’re open during the road works. From [confirmed start date] to [confirmed end date], please reach us via [confirmed street or entrance]. Pedestrian access is [confirmed detail]. For current road updates, check [official project page]. Call [business phone] if you need help finding us.
Replace each bracketed field with verified information before publishing. Delete a line that does not apply; do not leave a placeholder or imply that an unconfirmed detail is settled. Include a map image only if it shows the current, confirmed route.

Keep your own directions and the official project link distinct. Your notice should explain how to reach your business; the authority’s page is where customers can check current closure and project details. If a work phase changes, refresh your directions and check that any map image still depicts the route you have confirmed.
Put the update in the channels customers use
Use more than one appropriate channel, especially if customers may already be travelling when they learn about the closure. No source cited here provides comparative effectiveness data showing that one channel performs best. Choose channels based on who is likely to see them, how quickly you can update them, and whether they reach people on the way.
Think about the customer’s timing as well as the channel. A website or email can hold more detail for someone planning a visit; a refreshed social post can make a change visible to followers; a permitted on-site sign can help a person who is already near the closure. None replaces the need to verify that its route instructions are current. Match each message to the audience, and avoid repeating a route on channels you cannot keep up to date.
Website
Put the notice somewhere visitors can find before setting out—for example, on a prominent homepage banner or an access-information page. Include the confirmed route, the project link, and a phone number. If the closure affects a specific service, appointment type, or entrance, place the notice near the relevant booking or visit information as well.
Customer email and text messages
Send a concise update to customers with upcoming appointments, reservations, or orders when the closure could affect their arrival or collection. Tailor the message to the visit: state the usable approach or entrance and invite the customer to call if they need help. If work dates or access change, send a correction to people whose plans are affected rather than relying on them to find an older message.
Social media
Post the notice on the channels your customers already follow. Pin it or repeat it while the closure is active, and refresh it when the project moves to a new phase. A post that is accurate on the first day may mislead customers later if a route changes, so remove or correct outdated directions promptly.
Business listings and customer-facing profiles
Review your address or service area, opening hours, phone number, and website wherever customers look up your business. Google Business Profile guidance calls for accurate business representation and precise location or service-area information. Keep the real-world business name accurate; do not add closure-related keywords to the name to attract searches.
A profile update can help customers confirm your normal details, but it should not replace a clear closure notice or the authority’s live project information. Do not promise that you can directly edit navigation-map routes: the Google documentation identified for this guidance describes partner data submissions, not a general business-owner control for changing navigation maps.

- Stand Only, capable of holding two signs 24" wide 36" tall
Use on-site signs only when permitted and helpful
A short directional sign near the site can help people who are already in the area understand that the business is open and which way to approach. It is most useful when the sign can be seen safely, gives a simple direction, and does not conflict with official traffic or pedestrian signs.
Check with the project team or the relevant local authority before placing a sign, particularly on public land or beside a road. Confirm who is allowed to put it up, where it may stand, and whether it can be positioned without obstructing pedestrians, drivers, or visibility. A sign that points customers onto a prohibited route or blocks a safe walkway can create a hazard and make the directions less trustworthy.
Local guidance illustrates why permission should be checked rather than assumed. Kent County Council’s terms address signs stating that businesses remain open and showing the direction of access in the specific context of a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO). Herefordshire guidance says such signs should be used where appropriate. Those examples are not universal permission to place signs in other locations.
If a temporary A-frame or other directional sign would help, keep its message brief: say that the business remains open, if true, and indicate only the confirmed direction of access. A sign printer can produce custom wording, but the sign itself does not establish permission to use a pavement or roadside location. Confirm placement and safety with the authority or project team before putting it out, and remove it when the direction no longer applies.
Ask the project team whether it will provide business-open signs, include your business in a customer information page, or maintain a list of affected local businesses. In some jurisdictions, a closure applicant has duties to notify affected businesses or erect signs; the exact obligations depend on local rules and the project.
Keep the notice current while work is underway
Treat the access message as live information, not a one-time announcement. Check for project updates at the interval agreed with the project contact and whenever a customer reports that the route is different from your notice. When the work changes phase, verify the route before changing your directions.
When the plan changes
- Confirm the revised access arrangement with the responsible authority or project team.
- Update the main notice on your website or chosen source-of-truth page.
- Correct or remove older social posts, scheduled messages, and signs that now point to the wrong route.
- Notify customers whose upcoming visit, appointment, or order could be affected.
- Check that the business listing still shows accurate hours, contact details, and website information.
If the project’s exact dates are uncertain, do not quietly leave an old end date in place. Label a date as an estimate when that is what the project has provided, and direct customers to the authority’s current closure page for the latest status. If only part of the access picture is known, state the confirmed part and avoid filling the gap with a guess.

If access appears different on the ground
Do not improvise a detour that conflicts with official signs or the authorized route. Contact the project team to check the conditions, then update customers with what has been confirmed. If a customer calls from nearby, give only directions you know are permitted and safe; otherwise, tell them to follow official traffic control and check the authority’s current information.

Coordinate with the road project, not just your own channels
Ask the project team early whether it has a process for informing affected businesses and customers. It may be able to clarify access phases, publish a business update, or tell you when signage and public information will change. Provide the project contact with your correct business name, address, phone number, and the person who should receive urgent updates.
Responsibilities vary by location. Dorset Council describes advance warnings and notification expectations for planned closures, while also noting that notification arrangements vary with the level of disruption. The practical takeaway is to ask the responsible authority what applies to your closure rather than treating another council’s process as a rule for your site.
MnDOT’s construction guidance offers an example of a coordinated customer message: its sample social post directs people to call for directions and consult current closure and project information. The value of that approach is not a particular wording formula; it is giving customers a direct way to ask for help and a separate authoritative place to verify road conditions.
After the closure, remove temporary directions
When the work ends or access returns to normal, remove temporary signs and closure notices, cancel scheduled posts that imply the restriction is ongoing, and restore any temporary access information that no longer applies. Check your listing and website so the closure does not continue to shape what customers see after reopening.
The cited guidance does not prescribe one universal closeout procedure. The purpose is straightforward: current business information should describe current access. If some restrictions remain after the main closure ends, confirm those details with the authority and leave only the relevant, current instructions in place.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is my business still accessible during the road closure?
A closure does not always make a nearby business inaccessible. Access may be maintained but delayed, limited to an approach from one side, or changed for pedestrians. Ask the highway authority, project team, or contractor what applies to your address and confirm each route before sharing it.
How can customers find us while the road is closed?
Tell customers whether you are open, name the confirmed street or entrance and any relevant access change, include a phone number, and link to the responsible authority’s current closure or project page. Share the notice on your website and customer channels, and update it if the work phase changes.

Possibly, but permission and placement rules depend on the location and project. Check with the relevant authority or project team before putting a sign on public land or beside a road. Make sure it does not obstruct a walkway or conflict with official signs, and show only a confirmed route.
Can I change a navigation map so customers are routed to my business?
Do not assume you can directly edit navigation-map routes. Google’s documentation for this guidance describes partner data submissions rather than a general business-owner control for changing map routes. Keep your business listing accurate and direct customers to the authority’s live closure information.
What should I do if the access route changes or a customer reports a problem?
Check the situation with the project contact before revising directions. Update your main notice, correct older posts or scheduled messages, remove signs that point the wrong way, and contact customers whose visits may be affected. Do not invent a detour or tell drivers to ignore official closure signs.
The Bottom Line
Roadworks may change how customers reach you without closing your business. Confirm dates and permitted access with the responsible project contact, share concise directions through channels customers use, and keep every notice and sign aligned with current conditions. When in doubt, link to the authority’s live closure information instead of guessing.
