You can have a garden in a condo by growing a few suitable plants in containers on a balcony, patio, windowsill, or bright indoor spot. First measure the available sunlight, then choose crops and containers that fit it. Before placing heavy pots outside, check your condo rules and get property-specific guidance on balcony loads.
1. Check the light before choosing plants
Observe the proposed spot and count the hours of direct sunlight it receives. This matters because fruiting crops generally need more sun than leafy crops. University of Maryland Extension recommends 6–8 hours of direct sun for warm-season crops such as tomatoes and peppers, and 3–5 hours for cool-season crops such as lettuce and spinach. University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension likewise notes that leafy crops tolerate less light than fruiting plants.
If the site gets less sun, try leafy greens and suitable herbs rather than expecting tomatoes or peppers to thrive. Indoors, herbs need bright light; if natural light is insufficient, supplemental LED or fluorescent lighting is an option. See UNH Extension’s guide to growing vegetables in containers and Maryland Extension’s container-vegetable guidance.
2. Pick crops that fit the space
Container gardens can grow salad greens, peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, beans, chard, beets, radishes, squash, and cucumbers. For a compact site, look for bush or dwarf varieties and check the mature size before buying. Melons, corn, potatoes, and sweet potatoes are more challenging in containers. If you are new to gardening, begin with a small number of pots and add more after you learn how the site’s light and watering pattern behaves.

3. Choose containers for mature roots and site conditions
Size the container for the mature plant, not the seedling. Virginia Tech Cooperative Extension gives 6–8 inches as a general minimum depth for most plants, but crop-specific root needs vary, so treat this as a baseline rather than a universal pot size. Containers also need adequate drainage and enough stability for the location, especially where wind could tip a tall plant or lightweight pot.
Lightweight containers are easier to move, but portability should not come at the expense of stability. Use only containers that have not held toxic substances. For more on sizing and materials, consult Virginia Tech’s container gardening guidance and Illinois Extension’s container-size advice.

4. Use potting medium, not garden soil
Garden soil is too heavy for containers. Choose a lightweight container growing medium that retains moisture and nutrients while still draining well. This helps support plant growth without adding unnecessary weight to a balcony. UNH Extension explains the difference in its vegetable container guide.
5. Plan watering and runoff
Container soil volume is limited, so pots can dry quickly and may need frequent watering. Check them at least daily during hot or windy weather, then water according to the soil’s moisture and the crop’s needs. Do not leave roots sitting in standing water.

On a balcony, drainage affects more than your own plants: runoff can mark surfaces or drip onto a neighbor below. Use suitable saucers or a self-watering arrangement to catch water, and empty collected water regularly. Maryland Extension covers watering and runoff in its container-growing guidance.

Wet planters can weigh much more than they appear to. Maryland Extension gives the example of a 20-inch-diameter container filled with moist growing medium and plants weighing 100 pounds; that is an example, not a guaranteed weight for every planter. The sources establish no universal balcony load limit. Check your condo rules and obtain guidance specific to your property before adding heavy planters. Illinois Extension recommends consulting an architect about weight limits for heavy pots on balcony or rooftop gardens.

Wind is another practical concern: tall plants in lightweight pots can tip. Arrange containers with stability in mind, and do not assume that a small-looking planter is safe to place anywhere. A wheeled plant caddy can help you move a container to follow sunlight or protect it from severe weather, provided the pot remains stable where it is parked.
7. Start with a simple setup
- Observe the site: Count direct-sun hours at the balcony, patio, or window you plan to use.
- Choose a short crop list: Match plants to the light and available space; consider dwarf or bush varieties for compact areas.
- Set up suitable pots: Use containers sized for mature plants, with drainage and enough stability for the site.
- Fill with container medium: Select a lightweight medium that holds moisture and nutrients while draining well.
- Manage water: Check pots frequently, catch runoff, and empty saucers so roots do not sit in water.
- Confirm placement: Check building rules and get property-specific advice about weight before arranging heavy outdoor containers.
Condo rules, balcony capacity, wind exposure, sunlight, and growing seasons vary by property and location. The extension guidance cited here is from US institutions; use your building’s requirements and local extension advice for decisions that depend on your specific site.
