For lightweight Halloween decorations, removable adhesive hooks, clips, or picture-hanging strips can be a practical choice on a clean, smooth, compatible surface—provided the product is rated for the item and you follow its application and removal directions. They are not damage-proof: weak, damaged, uncured, or incompatible paint may still lift.
Choose an attachment that suits the decoration and wall
Start with two checks: what the decoration attaches like, and what the wall surface can support. Command’s guidance is to use the right hooks, clips, or strips for both the decoration’s weight and the surface. Check the wall before applying an adhesive
Adhesive products rely on the surface beneath them. Command says its hooks and picture-hanging strips work on painted walls when the paint is fully cured for at least seven days and the surface is clean, smooth, and in good condition. The seven-day instruction is the manufacturer’s guidance for its products, not a universal paint-curing rule. Apply the product according to its instructions
- Confirm the rating and surface compatibility. Read the package for the exact hook, clip, or strip; do not transfer a rating from a different size or product.
- Prepare the surface as directed. For the cited Command small wire hook, 3M recommends cleaning with rubbing alcohol. Other products may have different instructions. 3M small wire hook
- Press and position as directed. Follow the product’s package instructions for attaching the adhesive and securing the hook, clip, or strip.
- Wait before hanging the decoration. Follow the stated wait time for that product. The cited clear-hook instructions specify waiting one hour before use; do not assume that timing applies to every adhesive product. Command instructions

Remove adhesive hooks and strips slowly
When it is time to take decorations down, hold the hook or strip base against the wall and stretch the removal tab slowly straight down, following the product’s directions. Do not pull the tab toward yourself or peel the strip away from the wall; pulling outward can increase the chance of damage. When not to rely on a removable adhesive
- The wall is wallpapered, heavily textured, brick, rough concrete, or otherwise outside the product’s recommended surfaces.
- The paint is not fully cured, is loose or damaged, or you cannot confirm that the surface is suitable.
- The decoration exceeds the package rating, or its weight and shape make the intended attachment uncertain.
- The display is outdoors but the product is labeled for indoor use only.
In these cases, select another attachment point or a fastening method appropriate to the wall and decoration.
