Choose lights labeled for outdoor use, inspect every strand, secure it with suitable clips, and power it from a GFCI-protected outdoor circuit. When the season ends, unplug the display, take it down without pulling on the wires, and store usable strands indoors. The steps below cover planning, installation, power, and storage.
Choose outdoor-rated lights and inspect them first
Use strings whose labels and manufacturer instructions explicitly permit outdoor use. Do not use indoor-only lights outside. Look for a safety certification recognized where you live: Québec’s government guidance, for example, recommends certification from an organization such as CSA or ULC. Certification marks vary by location, so do not assume one label is universal. Its guidance also recommends low-heat-emitting LED bulbs and replacing bulbs with the same voltage.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) discusses seasonal lighting as temporary-use, plug-connected decorative lighting and describes safety characteristics associated with UL 588, 18th Edition, including wire size, strain relief, and overcurrent protection. A product listing photo cannot establish that a string meets those internal characteristics. The CPSC also notes that its 15(j) rule does not itself require testing or certification.

- Examine wires, plugs, sockets, and connections for fraying, cracks, or other damage.
- Check that sockets have bulbs, as FirstEnergy advises.
- Discard and replace a damaged strand. Do not improvise repairs; only use a repair method if the manufacturer explicitly provides one.
- Confirm the lights, any extension cord, and their connection limits are suitable for the intended outdoor use.
Plan the route and hang lights without damaging them
Decide where the lights will run and where they will attach before climbing. Choose attachment points on firm supports such as the house, walls, or trees, and use clips suited to both the surface and the light string. Secure strands so wind is less likely to pull them loose, but never drive nails or tacks through an electrical cord; puncturing insulation can create a hazard.

- Lay out the route and identify mounting points from the ground.
- Match clips or other attachments to the mounting surface and follow the light manufacturer’s instructions.
- Set the ladder securely on the ground before climbing. Keep ladders and decorations away from overhead power lines; follow local utility and ladder guidance for the situation, since the cited advice does not establish a single clearance distance.
- Attach the strand to firm supports without stretching it taut or pinching its cord.
Use outdoor-safe power and cord routing
Use an outdoor GFCI-protected circuit for exterior lights. Avoid an extension cord when a suitable receptacle is available. If one is necessary, choose a cord specifically designated for outdoor use, with a rating and length suitable for the lights, and follow both products’ instructions. CPSC’s extension-cord guidance describes a jacketed cord as an applicable characteristic for outdoor cords.
Québec’s guidance warns against using an overly long cord that must be coiled and against connecting extension cords end to end. Do not overload outlets or cords. The CPSC holiday leaflet advises no more than three standard-size light sets on one extension cord; that limit should not be generalized to every LED or commercial string. Follow the lights’ and cord’s instructions for the actual configuration.

- Avoid twisting, kinking, or tightly bending cords.
- Use a timer or switch the display off before going to bed or leaving home.
Take lights down and store them for next season
Bring outdoor lights inside after the festive season. Québec’s fire-prevention guidance, last updated October 10, 2025, explains: “After the festive season, bring in outdoor lights to prevent damage from the weather and sun.” It notes that decorative lights are not designed for long-term outdoor use.
- Switch off and unplug the lights before taking them down.
- Remove attachments carefully; do not pull a strand down by its wire.
- Inspect the strings again. Set aside damaged strands for disposal and pack only usable ones.
- Label each strand by its location if that will make next season’s setup easier.
- Wind usable lights loosely on a reel or cardboard holder, avoiding tight kinks. Keep bulbs and plugs from being crushed, then store the strands indoors in a dry place.
The winding and labeling suggestions are practical handling tips, not a prescribed storage method. The cited guidance recommends bringing lights indoors but does not require a particular reel, bin, temperature, or winding technique.
