For a smooth door with a finish approved by the product maker, an outdoor-rated adhesive hook is the most directly supported way to hang a wreath without drilling or nailing. Choose a hook rated for the wreath’s actual weight, prepare the surface as directed, and allow the adhesive to set before hanging anything. If the door is not suitable for adhesive, consider an over-the-door hanger—but check its fit and contact points before use.
Choose a hanging method that suits the door
Outdoor adhesive hook
For an outdoor wreath, use a product specifically labeled for outdoor applications. Command/3M says its outdoor hooks are intended for smooth outdoor surfaces, including doors, and use water- and UV-resistant adhesive. The company’s cited Outdoor Stainless Steel Wire Hook is listed for temperatures from -20°F to 125°F; that is a specification for this product, not a universal range for adhesive hooks. Check the product’s current packaging for approved surfaces and limitations before applying it.
Match the hook’s stated weight capacity to the wreath’s weight. Command notes that weight limits vary by product, so do not assume a hook is suitable just because it looks sturdy. Its FAQ advises using outdoor products for outdoor applications; indoor strips are not designed for outdoor conditions.
Over-the-door hanger
A hanger that rests over the top of the door avoids adhesive, but suitability depends on the particular door and hanger. Before buying or installing one, check the model’s door-thickness range, clearance, whether the door can close freely, and where the hanger will touch the finish. Fit specifications vary by model; verify them in the current product instructions rather than relying on a universal fit claim.

Install an outdoor adhesive hook
- Check the wreath and hook. Weigh the wreath and confirm that the hook’s listed capacity meets or exceeds that weight. Check that the door surface is among the product’s approved surfaces and that the hook is rated for outdoor use.
- Prepare the mounting spot. Command’s front-door décor instructions say to wipe the surface with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry. Use the cleaning method and preparation steps specified for the exact hook you bought.
- Apply the hook and wait. In that front-door project, Command instructs users to press the hook firmly for 30 seconds and wait one hour before hanging décor. Follow the directions packaged with your hook if they differ.
- Hang the wreath within the hook’s rating. Place it carefully so the weight is supported by the hook. If the wreath lacks a loop, ribbon can connect it to the hook; Command demonstrates this approach in its wreath-hanging project. Ribbon does not increase the hook’s rated capacity.
Remove the hook carefully
Follow the removal directions for the specific product. Command says to pull its adhesive strips straight down, stretching them slowly along the surface rather than pulling them out toward you. A removable strip is not a guarantee against marks or finish damage: surface compatibility, preparation, and following the product directions all matter.
