The method appears in a University of Florida IFAS activity sheet, but the available guidance does not show that a potato improves rooting compared with ordinary propagation medium. Here are the activity’s steps, what to watch for, and a more conventional method to compare.
How to try the potato method
The University of Florida IFAS activity sheet describes the potato as a holder for the cutting. Its directions are an activity procedure, not evidence of a measured success rate.
- Make a hole about 1½ inches deep in a whole potato.
- Prepare a rose stem cutting 4–8 inches long and insert its cut end into the hole.
- Plant the potato in soil with the cutting upright.
- Keep the soil watered and place the planting in a sunny window or under a grow light.
- Watch for new leaves. The activity sheet says to transplant when well-formed new leaves appear, typically in about two months. If the potato sprouts, trim the sprouts or leave them in place.
Those steps come from the University of Florida IFAS activity sheet. It does not compare potato-grown cuttings with cuttings rooted in propagation medium.
What standard rose-cutting guidance recommends
UC Davis Foundation Plant Services recommends rooting cuttings in a draining pot filled with saturated potting soil or a 1:1 perlite-to-vermiculite mixture. The method manages moisture and humidity directly rather than relying on a potato.

- PROMOTES ROOTING: Rooting hormone grows new plants from cuttings
- ACTIVE INGREDIENT: Indole-3-butyric acid, similar to the root hormone that naturally occurs in plants.
- APPLY TO CUT ENDS: Moisten the plant cutting, stir the cut end in powder, tap to remove excess rooting hormone and plant
- GROW FROM CUTTINGS: Works with most popular home, garden and greenhouse varieties
- ROOT NEW FAVORITE PLANTS: Helps African violets, roses, poinsettias, philodendrons, geraniums, coleus, woody ornamentals and more grow from cuttings
- Use clean, sharp pruning shears to take a 6–8 inch cutting. Make the lower cut just below a node and retain the top two leaves.
- Apply rooting hormone according to its label, if using it.
- Set the cutting about three inches into the medium in a pot with drainage.
- Cover the pot with a clear bag to maintain humidity. Keep it in bright indirect light and keep the medium moist, not wet.
UC Davis says roots may develop in approximately four weeks, but a plant suitable for the landscape may take roughly six months. Root development and readiness to plant outdoors are different stages. Its guidance also notes that rooting success depends on the rose variety. See UC Davis Foundation Plant Services’ rose propagation guidance.
How long rooting may take
Timing varies with the method, stage, rose variety, and growing conditions. These are source-specific estimates, not guarantees:

- Root hormone for cuttings are perfect for the propagation of indoor and outdoor plants
- Rooting hormone powder encourages faster rooting from cuttings
- Contains Hormodin 1- rooting hormone for plants; the same formula used by professionals
- Ideal as a root starter for cuttings in container gardens and garden ornamentals
- Root hormone powder makes plant propagation as simple as cut, dip, and plant!
- Potato activity: The IFAS sheet says well-formed new leaves typically appear in about two months; it does not establish that leaves confirm a strong root system.
- Conventional medium: UC Davis estimates roots may develop in approximately four weeks and landscape suitability may take roughly six months.
- Individual pots: An Ask Extension response by Jean R. Natter, Master Gardener Diagnostician, says to wait about six weeks before moving firmly rooted cuttings into individual pots; actual timing depends on prevailing temperatures. See Ask Extension’s propagation response.
- Seasonal approach: The RHS says softwood stem-tip cuttings in early to mid spring are the easiest route and may root in about two months, with new plants ready for the garden after a year. Hardwood cuttings taken from mid-autumn to late winter are another option and root more slowly. See the RHS guide to taking cuttings.
Choosing a rose and setting expectations
Not every rose roots equally well: UC Davis identifies variety as a factor in success. A cutting from a grafted rose may also perform differently from its parent plant. The RHS notes that some roses are protected by Plant Breeders’ Rights, which can limit propagation for sale; check the applicable rights before selling propagated plants.
If you want the more established approach, use a draining pot, moist propagation medium, humidity cover, and bright indirect light. A potato is optional to the activity, not a demonstrated rooting aid. The sources do not establish whether it produces a higher, lower, or equal success rate than standard medium.
